We are GRATEFUL for caring young people
It was a couple of weeks before Christmas. The neighborhood was gearing up for Christmas, with houses and yards decorated with
lights, greenery, and red and green bows. Christmas trees, with presents piled underneath, sparkled in the windows. Everyone was filled
with the holiday spirit. Everyone, that is, except Emma.
Emma’s grandmother and her next door neighbor were in the hospital. This was not supposed to be happening at Christmas. Emma
wanted to do something, something to help her grandmother and her neighbor. Something to help the hospital that was making them
well. But, what to do? Emma got together with her friends in the neighborhood and came up with an idea…
A week or so later, a call came to the Executive Director of Chowan Hospital Foundation. “There is a group of children selling
handmade bracelets and other jewelry at Edenton Lake and Harbor. They are dressed up and really working hard to raise money for
Vidant Chowan Hospital. You’ve got to see this!”
Sure enough, there they were…11 children, some wearing various reindeer and Santa paraphernalia (and most in sock or bare feet
since it was very warm!) And, indeed, they were working hard. When a car would drive around the circle, they lined both side of the
street (and yes, they may have even jumped into the middle of the street) and waved their signs and arms to alert the driver of the
wonderful “must haves” they should buy for Christmas presents that would also help Vidant Chowan. It was a very effective system, to
say the least. At the end of the day, the group of caring young people had raised over $160 to help Vidant Chowan Hospital.
