Hitler youth Luke Y. and Chandler L. Hitler's Goal • “He alone who owns the youth gains the future” –Hitler. It's goal was to bring as many eligible girls and boys as possible under its control. • Hitler made membership in Hitler Youth mandatory in 1936. Every boy and girl between 10 and 18 had to join Hitler Youth. He had punishments for those who refused to join. Expectations • The Hitler Youth remained the official youth group of the German state for the 12 years that Hitler ruled Germany. • Not every German adolescent was allowed to become a member of the Hitler Youth. You had to meet 4 standards to join. Standard 1 • The first was racial purity. You could not have Jewish ancestors. All Jewish youth were denied membership. Also you could no join if your ancestors were African, Chinese , polish, Indian , or any people of color. Standard 2 • Once they were proven racial pure, they had to prove no heredity diseases ran in the family. In Nazi Germany these conditions were defined as hereditary disease: epilepsy, schizophrenia, deafness, dumbness, prostitution, mental retardation, and certain forms of venereal disease. Alcoholics, homosexuals, and people with berth defects and hemophilia were also included in this category. Standard 3 • Once ancestor and heredity fitness of a boy/girl satisfied Nazi standards, the Hitler youth organization made certain that the child had no “objectionable” political attitudes. This meant that children who behave poorly during their trial relationship period may not be accepted. This standard did pose a problem for young people whose parents had been associated with communists and socialist movements. Standard 4 • Finally, once youngsters met all of these standards, they had one more thing to prove – that they were physically fit or could quickly become fit. Many boy’s and girl’s with asthma had difficulty meeting this requirement and therefore not allowed to join.
