Inside this issue
This week marks two very important occasions in our College. The first is the
Graduation Liturgy and Function for our Year 12 students and families. The
second is the Orientation Day for the Year 7 Class of 2017. Friday is the day in
our calendar when all of this happens. With all of the emotions and
anticipation of the first day at high school, and the sadness and trepidation of
the last formal occasion as a student at the school, it creates a surreal
atmosphere around the College. We pray for both these groups of young
people, that their new paths are filled with opportunity.

Acting Appointments
As I noted last week, with the departure of two Senior Leadership staff members we
needed to act quickly to fill their positions at this time of the year. In consultation
with the Governing Council, I have decided that the best means of filling the
positions at this stage, was to appoint current staff to acting positions, until the
positions can be advertised nationally and a suitable field attracted. In education,
advertising at this time of the year is not conducive to attracting the best candidates.
I am pleased to announce that the following staff have accepted my request to fill
these positions in an acting capacity:
Director of Mission
Mr Patrick Fabian
Deputy Principal—Pastoral Wellbeing
Mrs Kerrie Flynn
Both Patrick and Kerrie will bring immense skill, character and expertise to their
respective roles, and I look forward to the broad contributions they will make, both
to their area of expertise and also the broader College through their Senior
Leadership positions.
Board Vacancy
In 2017, a vacancy will exist on the College Board due to Mr Kevin O’Daly completing
his six years of service. We will acknowledge Kevin’s service when he completes his
term in March 2017. However, the process of gathering expressions of interest
starts now. The vacancy will be a Board Nominee, that is, the Board accepts
nominations and endorses those who they believe will add value to the College
Board, based on the current skills matrix. The endorsed nominees are then sent to
the College Governing Council for approval and selection, in the case of multiple
nominees. If any parents are interested in applying, please refer to the flyer on the
back page of this newsletter for more information. At present, the Board is seeking
individuals with knowledge, recent experience and expertise in large scale finance
operations and industrial construction.

Speaking Excellence - Erin Galbraith
Speaking in public is a nightmare for some but not Erin Galbraith. On Monday, 14
November Erin stood, calm and collected before an audience of 40 at Legacy
House, Adelaide to deliver two speeches.
Erin was one of two students representing Tasmania at the National Final of the
Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition. There were eight competitors in total
from New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.
Erin’s five minute prepared speech was tilted ‘Mateship…throw another shrimp on
the barby’. This well written speech delved into how diggers of the 1st Field
Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, believed one of their soldiers - Gunner Phillip
Norris was killed in Vietnam and had died of wounds suffered when their base at
Nui Dat was attacked in the hours before the Battle of Long Tan. The true meaning
of mateship, a core Legacy value, was epitomised in Erin’s words and delivery.
Erin (3rd from right) with her
fellow competitors
Erin’s next challenge was to compose a two minute speech on the topic ‘Making a
difference’. This might not sound too arduous but, when you only have five
minutes to prepare, your thought processes are pushed to the limit. Her speech
focused on the excessive pressures placed on teenagers by society, as the teen
years are considered to be the formative years, the years that 'make a difference'
but, in reality, this pressure can make a difference to their mental health.
At the conclusion of the competition Erin was awarded second place and
presented with a medallion, certificate and Oxford dictionary. Her dedicated
approach to both this competition and to public speaking is to be admired.

2016-17 Carnival Series
Jack Colegrave has made a fantastic start to the 2016—17 carnival series. He has
shown some good early season speed after winning the 100-metre final at the
Launceston Carnival on Saturday.
After scoring easy wins in his heat and semi-final, he held on to claim the honours
in a final, winning in a time of 10.53 seconds. Congratulations Jack. We wish you
every success for the rest of the carnival series.

Success for Alin House
Congratulations to Alin House for a wonderful effort in designing and producing her
own cushion cover in Year 10 Fibres Technology. The cushion has been colour
schemed by Alin in order to co-ordinate with her bedroom. The cushion was constructed using the sewing machine and overlocker. Alin also chose the fabrics and
embellishments as a part of the ‘Collage and Culture’ Design Brief.
Well done, Alin.

Designer Dippers
Recently, Year 7 students were required to design and produce economical and
nutritious ‘dippers’ to go with some hummus dip. Students were required to create
dippers that were economical and nutritious. They also had to present their dippers
attractively. Here are some examples of the wonderful work from 7 Home
Economics 2C.

Year 10 Introduction to Hospitality
Mrs Jennifer Reeves
Industry Excursion
What a great way to end an incredible year with a fantastic bunch of students. An
industry visit to local business and suppliers started at the House of Anvers and no
one complained at the sight of beautiful chocolate products and salubrious hot
chocolate at 10am in the morning. After a look around and exploring different
products on offer, we drove to Hill Street Grocer at Devonport. This is an amazing
shop and walking inside made you think that you were on the mainland shopping in
a modern foodie store as there was a massive selection of local products.
Supporting local businesses in and around this beautiful island is a big part of the
Hill Street ethos. There was so much to see: freshly made breads, cafe and an
outstanding selection of fresh and cured meats and cheese.
Next stop was Drift Café for the best hot chips around. The girls decided to sit down
for table service and ordered yet more food to fuel. It was good watching staff in
action: table service, taking orders and delivering food. Afterwards, and even
though it was raining, a supply of silly string and water pistols were used in and
around the playground nearby.
Stop 4 was the Berry Patch for more food. I thought by now the students may have
declined freshly made ice cream but, no, absolutely not! We indulged yet again.
I would like to say a big thank you to Miles Kerr for driving the bus on the day and a
massive thank you to a cool bunch of students. I know that the skills and
knowledge they have developed this year will definitely assist their future work
endeavours. Regardless of which pathway they choose they will have an excellent
skill set of professional attributes gained from completing this hands-on VET
course.

Fiji Immersion Trip 2017
The ultimate expression of faith in action is to live through service and solidarity in
a disadvantaged community. In the September school holidays a group of 18 staff
and students embarked on this journey. The whole experience, which included
formation activities prior to departure, was a resounding success with all students
commenting on the depth to which they lived the Fijian culture, the people they
met and the stories they heard, and the feeling of gratitude they felt by offering
their time and energy.
Based on the success of the 2016 program, the opportunity will again be offered to
students of the College to put their faith and values into practice and participate in
a project focused service-learning experience in Fiji. The experience will provide an
opportunity for students to positively impact on the lives of others whilst being
immersed in a foreign culture, gaining a real life, educational/service experience
with a sense of purpose.
Students will be challenged to be people of hope in our world today, fulfilling our
mission as people of faith and goodwill towards others. This is an exciting
opportunity that we are pleased to offer. Expression of Interest forms are available
from Madi (Youth Ministry Assistant).
