Pi Day 2017 = Success

April 2017—May 2017
2016/2017—Issue 5
Pi Day 2017 = Success
Pi Day 2017 was another successful celebration.
The students donated 61 pies or circular food items to
be enjoyed while we worked on pi related activities. We
had 33 visitors come enjoy the day with us.
Each class performed an activity to estimate pi by
cutting a cylinder. The students measured the
diameter and (then after cutting) the circumference.
The closest estimation was from the 3.14128 by the
calculus students.
The Advanced Algebra students created colorful designs by connecting the digits of pi. These students also
followed patterns to create spirolaterals.
The Geometry students took a square, drew lines, cut out the pieces, rearranged the pieces, then traced to
create tessellations.
The PreCalculus and Calculus students did an activity similar to Buffont's needles by dropping toothpicks to
determine if the toothpick landed on or off parallel lines. The students then used Buffont's equation to
determine an estimation of pi. The closest estimation was 3.08.
Thank you to all that baked a pie, came to visit, or helped in any way to make our pi day a success.
It is hard to believe, but three quarters of the 2016-2017 school year are complete! March 10 marked the
end of the third quarter, and soon, the last day of school for students, May 25, will be here. In this newsletter
article, I will highlight a few important items that are on the horizon.
First, I wanted to remind everyone of the calendar changes that were made due to school being cancelled.
Below are the changes to the calendar.
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
April 13 - Change from “No School” to “Normal School Day”
April 17 - Change from “No School” to “e-day”
April 18 - Change from “No School” to “Normal School Day”
May 1 – No school for P-6 students due to Elementary Honor Band Clinic & Concert
May 24 - This was the planned last day with kids … it will now be a normal school day
May 25 - Change from “No School” to “Last Day of School for Students, Early Dismissal, Staff
Here All Day"
May 26 - Change from “No School” to “Inservice, No Students”
Next, the end of the third quarter and the beginning fourth quarter marks the beginning of a very important
stretch of time for students in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11. Why?? The NeSA testing window is officially
open and students will soon begin taking the assessments for which PPS is held accountable. The NeSA
testing window began on March 20 and ends on May 5. Teachers schedule NeSA tests at times when it
makes sense for their students, but the tests must occur during the window. Students in Grade 11 will have
a different NeSA test than in years past. Instead of taking NeSA assessments similar to what students in
grades 3-8 take, 11th grade students will be taking the ACT. While most Pender students typically take the
ACT, it is now required of all 11th grade students. All Pender juniors will take the ACT on the State mandated
date of April 19. The NeSA and ACT assessments are very important, and your help in making sure
students are prepared when their testing day arrives is greatly appreciated. If you have not received a
testing schedule for your son or daughter, please contact your student’s teacher ASAP!
The end of the school year is also the time of year when various building projects are completed. PPS’s
strategy has been to consistently invest in school district property so it remains in good condition for many
years to come. Every summer, projects are completed with that thought process in mind, and this summer is
no different. Some of the projects that will be completed are replacing the roof on the elementary building,
replacing the roof on the multipurpose room, installing a new fence at Heyne Field, remodeling the
Technology Director’s office, giving the junior high locker rooms a facelift, installing safety glass in the main
entrance of the building, replacing carpet in several classrooms, and a few others. While many of the
projects won’t be completed until the summer months, some of them have already started. Anyone who has
driven by Heyne Field probably noticed the fence is gone. The new fence will be installed soon and the rest
of the projects will be completed soon as well.
Continued on page 3
Continued from page 2
On another topic, the District is going in a new direction with respect to technology support and service.
Since the inception of the 1:1 initiative (2011-12 school year), Jason Sturek has provided technology
support and service for the District on a part time basis. Jason has done a fantastic job over the years, and
his efforts have been greatly appreciated. As time has passed, PPS has continued to infuse technology
into the classroom, and the amount of support and service we need has significantly increased. Going into
the 2017-18 school year, it was clear that a full-time employee would be necessary to meet our service and
support needs. Thankfully, we had someone in the District that was willing and able to take on this role.
Jennifer Davis is currently a 7-12 Science teacher, but will serve as the Technology Director next year. A
reduced contract will be maintained with Jason Sturek for a period of time to help transition Jennifer Davis
into her new role. Once that transition is complete, Mrs. Davis will take on all responsibilities associated
with the position. This is an exciting change for PPS, and we look forward to Mrs. Davis taking on this new
role.
I wanted to close this newsletter article by speaking about the tone of the current Nebraska Legislative
session as it relates to public education. The overall feeling of Legislators and in Nebraska and the
Governor is that property taxes need to be reduced. At the same time, State receipts are down and there is
a need to cut State allocations. One of the State’s largest allocations is the amount of money that goes to
public schools in the form of State Aid. As a result, Legislators and the Governor are calling for the amount
of money allocated to schools to be reduced. In other words, two of the most significant sources of revenue
for public schools in Nebraska, State Aid and property taxes, need to be reduced. It is hard to argue
against either of the aforementioned concepts, and that is not the intent of this information. The intent is to
inform district patrons of the tone of the legislative session. There is no need to panic or make something
out of the situation that simply isn’t true. PPS is in a very good financial position, and we will be able to
continue to provide high quality educational opportunities for our students for many years to come. I plan to
keep a close eye on this legislative session so solid decisions regarding how to best move forward can be
made.
Those interested in more information should contact me via email at [email protected], via
phone by calling 402-385-3244 ext. 310, or in person by simply stopping at the school.
GO PENDRAGONS!!!
Jason Dolliver, Superintendent
Greetings from
Eric Miller—High School Principal
Hello Pendragons!
It is hard to believe the last 2 months of the school year are upon us. April and May are extremely busy in
the secondary building and our calendars are full. One of the biggest items on our list is NeSA and ACT testing for
the secondary students. Testing season is always an important season for all of our teachers here and for the
students as well. It is important for parents to be participants in the preparation of these important dates.
NeSA tests are nothing new for our students but there have been a few changes this year within the test
itself. The state has tried to make the test a little more challenging for the students at various levels. Our teachers
have been helping students prepare within their classes since the beginning of the year and I am confident our kids
will be ready.
The State Department of Education has changed from the NeSA test to the ACT for our high school juniors
this year. On April 19th all juniors will participate in the ACT test across the state. This test is seen as a college
preparation test and is taken nationally by students each year. If you are the parent of a junior, please circle that
date on your calendar. Our teachers have been working hard on ACT test preparation as well throughout the year
and we have added a few specific preparations designed specifically for this test.
Prom is another big event that is coming up quickly. A letter was sent out in February to all parents of
juniors and seniors and it has been included in this newsletter again for you to read. Prom is a fun night that many of
our kids have been looking forward to and we want to make it a safe and fun for all kids that participate.
Graduation is only a few short weeks away and will be here before we know it. Our ceremony will take place
on Sunday, May 14th at 2:00 p.m. in the Heese Event Center. The seniors last official day of school will be Friday,
May 12th. On this morning, we will have our graduation practice and the seniors will be completing their check-out
process.
Please make sure to check the school calendar for the many awards nights, concerts, games, and other
events we have planned over the last couple months. It has been another wonderful school year here at Pender
Public Schools and we hope to see you at the spring events as we close it out.
Have a wonderful Spring and I hope to see you all soon!
Eric Miller, 7-12 Principal
Dear Parents and Students,
Prom is coming up quickly for PHS. This is always an enjoyable and anticipated event for everyone
involved! One thing to remember in the midst of all the excitement is that Prom is a school-sponsored
activity. Please remember that throughout the evening we not only represent ourselves and our
families, but our school and our community.
The first item I would like to address is attire. Modesty and good taste can accompany elegance and
sophistication. Since Prom is a school-sponsored activity, students and parents must understand that
proper attire is an expectation. Gentlemen will be required to wear dress pants, shirt, and tie, with tuxedoes being the general tradition. Ladies are to wear an appropriate dress/outfit.
Secondly, it is important to remember that attendance is a privilege. Academic performance is priority
and failure to comply with classroom expectations could result in the loss of that privilege. Students
must be in attendance at school all day the Friday prior to Prom in order to attend the activities. The
only exception would be for students who are absent for a school-sponsored activity or have prior
administrative approval. Students must also sign up themselves and their dates in the office if they
plan to attend. Students with an out of town date must have a permission slip completed and signed
by the administrator of their date’s school. No date over the age of 19 will be permitted.
The third and final item I would like to address is conduct. Prom is supposed to be a time for our
students to relax and have fun with their peers. It can also be a time in which negative choices can
lead to life-changing consequences. Adhering to school rules and policies for appropriate behavior is
a good place to start. Making good choices before during and after the Prom will help ensure a
positive experience for everyone.
I also want to inform parents that breathalyzers will again be used on each student upon their arrival
to Prom. If there are any issues parents will be contacted immediately. If a parent cannot be reached
after 2 attempts the student will be turned over to the custody of the county sheriff. This year we will
not be allowing students to leave between prom and post prom. Students may use the locker rooms
to change after the dance. If a student chooses to leave the dance early, parents will be notified and
the student will not be readmitted to the dance or post prom.
It is my hope that the 2017 Prom is one of the most memorable nights for all of our students in
attendance. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to get in touch with me and I will
do my best to answer them. See you at Prom!
Respectfully,
Eric Miller
7-12 Principal
Hello Pendragon Families!
Happy Spring!!  The weather is warming up, the grass is trying to turn green, and the kids cannot wait to get
outside!  Things are busy here at PPS. With that, we have a few items I would like to remind you of.
One of the most important things we have going on this time of year is NeSA testing. Our 3rd-6th graders will be
taking the NeSA English/Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Science tests very soon. The results of these Nebraska
State Accountability Tests (NeSA) are the yardstick by which every school district in the state is measured, so we
take these tests very seriously. You can help us prepare your child for a positive testing experience by assuring
he/she is well rested. Helping them make good choices nutritionally is also important so their minds and bodies are
powered and ready.
The testing schedule for the elementary students is as follows:
Tuesday, April 4 - 6Liakos (ELA #1)
Wednesday, April 5 – 6Liakos (ELA #2)
Thursday, April 6 – 6Hoffman (ELA #1)
Friday, April 7 – 6Hoffman (ELA #2)
Monday, April 10 – 4Nixon/Miller (ELA #1)
Tuesday, April 11 – 4Nixon/Miller (ELA #2)
Wednesday, April 12 – 5English (ELA #1)
Thursday, April 13 – 5English (ELA #2)
Friday, April 14 – No School
Monday, April 17 – No School
Tuesday, April 18 – 5English (Math #1 & #2)
Wednesday, April 19 - No Testing
Thursday, April 20 – 3Hoffman (Math #1 & #2)
Friday, April 21 – 4Nixon/Miller (Math #1 & #2)
Monday, April 24 – 5English (Science #1 & #2)
Tuesday, April 25 – 3Hoffman (ELA #1)
Wednesday, April 26 – 3Hoffman (ELA #2)
Thursday, April 27 - 6Liakos (Math #1 & #2)
Friday, April 28 – 6Hoffman (Math #1 & #2)
Preparing emotionally for testing can be just as important as preparing physically. Please keep an eye out in
Thursday folders for a chance to send a “good luck” message to your child prior to testing. Reading a happy note
from mom and dad prior to NeSA testing will certainly help prepare your child for success!
Another exciting event for elementary students is the elementary track meet/field day. This event will be held
Tuesday, May 16th 1:30 p.m. at the football field. More information will be sent home in Thursday folders closer to
that date! 
Don’t forget…we are still looking for volunteers to share their skills and talents with our students that attend our
Beyond the Bell After-School Program. Additional mentors are also being sought for the Pender Teammates
Chapter. Donations for the Backpack Food Program continue to be accepted as well. I hope you consider spending
some time with us! Please contact the school if you are interested in any of these opportunities or you have any
questions. Thank you for all you do to support Pender Public Schools!
It’s a GREAT day to be a Pendragon!
Kelly Ballinger
Elementary Principal/Special Education Director
Pender Public Schools
Greetings to all! With the end of the year soon approaching things are getting put into the fast track for completion.
Seniors have been filling out scholarship applications one after another in hopes of gaining a little extra help with
tuition next fall. Things have changed a little this year with the FAFSA completion during the first semester, but feel
comfortable with where many of the students sit with the whole financial aid process. Like always “It’s a great day to
be a Pendragon.”
Things that I would like to inform you of are:
The IRS recently took down its Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) due to security concerns. The DRT allows students and
parents to transfer income tax information into the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
If you already filed your 2017-18 FAFSA and used the DRT to input your tax information, this outage should
not affect you.
If you and your parents have NOT completed your 2017-18 FAFSA, follow these steps:
1. Complete the FAFSA at fafsa.gov. If you get an error message when you try IRS Data Retrieval (“page not
found” or “access denied”), manually input your 2015 tax data.
2. Request an official tax return transcript of your 2015 income tax data from the IRS. You will need the
transcript if the college(s) you list on the FAFSA request verification of your tax data.
3. Respond to verification requests as soon as possible and send all requested documents to the college.
Colleges will not award financial aid until the verification process is complete.
For free help with the FAFSA or verification process, contact EducationQuest to make an appointment. You can also
submit questions via Facebook and Twitter to EducationQuest. They respond quickly!
Seniors…It’s decision time!
Here’s how to decide on the college that’s the right fit for you.
Compare your college acceptance letters, financial aid award notifications, and campus visit notes. List the pros and
cons of each school using the following criteria:

Location – Is the college too close? If you come home every weekend, you won’t experience true campus
life. Is the college too far away? If so, you may not make it home as often as you’d like.

Cost – Can your family afford the school? What can you expect for financial aid beyond your freshman year?
Did you receive renewable scholarships? How much in student and parent loans will you need to cover
expenses?

Academic program – Does the college offer the program that interests you? What happens if you change
majors? Does the college offer other programs that interest you?

Student life – Does the school offer activities you will enjoy? Do you like the living arrangements provided by
the school? Will you have an opportunity to work on or near campus?
Make your final decision by May 1 – and then notify the colleges you’re rejecting so they can offer your spot, and any
financial aid, to another student.

SUCCESS
As always, the Book Fair during ParentTeacher Conferences was a HUGE
success. The big boost to our sales
came from the PTO purchasing a book
for all students in grades K-6. With
this generous donation, each student
was able to choose a book to take
home as their own. I would personally
like to say THANK YOU to all the
parents and students that support the
Book Fair and to the PTO for their
donation.

Nebraska Gigantic Map
During the week of March 13-17, the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade Social Studies classes had the opportunity to work on a variety of
activities with the E.S.U. #1 Gigantic Nebraska map. Mrs. Liakos
brought the classes to the multipurpose room to learn all about
the districts, counties, landmarks, population, and many other
facts about our great state, which just celebrated it’s 150th year

Classroom instruction: Tuesday, May 30th thru Friday, June 2nd from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with a one hour lunch
break from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
Classroom Final Exam: Saturday, June 3rd beginning at 9:00 am and until completed.
Driving Schedule: A schedule will be developed during classroom instruction. Each student will be required to drive
from a Monday thru Saturday at a specific time. Driving will begin on Monday, June 5th for a group of 9. If there are
more than 9 students taking the class, then another group will drive Monday thru Saturday starting on June 12th. I will
need to know when a student CAN NOT drive during a part of the day. For example, a student works from 8:00 in the
morning until noon everyday. This student would then have to drive the late session. If a student doesn't have any
conflicts, they will be assigned a driving session.
Drive Sessions: 7:30 am to 10:30 am, 11 am to 2 pm, and 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Students are expected to drive the
same time each day.
Drive Test: Each student is given an individual drive test on the Saturday of the week they drive. The drive test lasts
about 25 minutes. Testing begins at 8:00 and tests are given on the half hour until all students have taken the test.
Cost: $260.00
