Nutritional Supplements for Dry Eye Disease There are two supplements which appear to help dry eye patients maintain a higher level of comfort. The first is simply water. As we all know, proper hydration is essential in maintaining overall body health. Studies have shown that it also aids in maintaining proper tearing. Omega-3 fatty acids (such as flaxseed oil, cod liver oil or fish oil) is another supplement that has shown to be beneficial for those with dry eyes. It restores the oil component of our tears, thereby decreasing the level of tear evaporation and keeping tears on the surface of the eye longer. Incorporating both of these supplements can really help the average dry eye patient live a more comfortable life, particularly in our sometimes challenging Southern California climate. Many patients benefit from our MaxiTears supplement which contains a combination of various omega-3 fatty acids. First Dry Eye Medication Approved by FDA Those who suffer from Dry Eye Disease (DED) typically have dry, gritty, red, and irritated eyes, often as a result of inflammation. For many years, the doctors at the South Pasadena Optometric Group have prescribed Restasis, a mild antiinflammatory eye drop, in an attempt to control dry eye symptoms. Last month, a new antiinflammatory medication called Xiidra (pronounced, Zy-drah) became the first one approved by the FDA for treatment of dry eye. We are excited to offer this as another alternative for our dry eye sufferers. In addition to inflammation, dry eye disease can also be caused by an age-related natural decrease in tearing and/or from a blockage of the glands in the eyelids. These glands provide a protective oil layer to minimize tear evaporation. Our doctors recommend the use of tear replacement therapy (artificial tears) or plugs in the drainage duct to prevent tear evaporation for those with milder forms of dry eye. Often, patients see results with a combination of treatment therapies. Be sure to let us know if you have symptoms of dry eye disease or if you need guidance on which artificial tears to use. Eye Opening Facts A recent study in Seoul, South Korea showed that the rate of nearsightedness of 19 year old men was 97%!! The government of China is trying to eliminate homework in their primary schools as a method to stem the tide of nearsightedness.
