ARCHDIOCESEAN SCHOOL CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS Archdiocese of Denver Policy # 4180 It shall be the archdiocesan school principal’s responsibility to supervise a balanced program of student co-curricular offerings in an archdiocesan school. Such programs must not interfere with the school’s academic program, but should provide intellectual, spiritual, artistic, and physical enrichment for students and advance of the mission of the school. Coaches and club leaders generously donate their time, and the parent/child should show appreciation by attending all practices and games. You must notify coaches and leaders directly if you will miss practices, meets, or games. Competitive Philosophy Some Extracurricular Activities are competitive. The competitive spirit of St. John the Baptist Catholic School students must positively reinforce a student's self-esteem, confidence and behavior. Competition is encouraged in all educational activities as long as it is focused on the school's vision and mission. Eligibility Participation in an extracurricular activity is a privilege granted to students by parents, faculty and staff. All students are eligible based on the grade level of the activity. Students are expected to do the following: maintain passing grades (grades 5 - 8), which are reviewed every Monday. Students receiving an “F” in any subject may be disallowed from active participation in an activity. Athletes who are benched are still required to attend a game, on the bench, in support of their team; demonstrate good sportsmanship during practice, rehearsal, games, events and competitions; give priority to the school's team over teams outside of school and follow the rules of the adult supervisor at all times; attend school the entire day of a game, event, competition or practice. Suspension from an Extracurricular Activity Suspension from an Extracurricular Activity means that a student may not participate in any event for one game. A student undergoing a non-academic suspension from an activity will be required to support that activity by participating in practices and attending the events. Academic suspension does not require attendance at practices, but does require the student to attend the game in support of the team. Violations of the above eligibility requirements will be discussed with the teacher, parent, and principal and may result in a suspension from an extracurricular activity. Students may be suspended for a sport for inappropriate behavior at school. Extra-Curricular Programs There are many activities within the school and parish community for students of SJB to become involved. The activities on the page that follows are extracurricular programs which we have had in the past. If a new opportunity presents itself, we will send home information. Many programs are offered because parents generously donate their time and talents with our students. 47 Extracurricular Activities Guidelines for Extracurricular Activities at School St. John the Baptist Catholic School encourages students to broaden their knowledge and experiences by participating in Extracurricular Activities. Students will find a variety of new skills to learn and new friendships to enjoy while sharing their common interests. Parents who have a desire to share their talents through any of the activities listed below or to create a new activity should contact our Viking Events coordinator, our Athletic Director, or Principal (when appropriate). Spelling Bee Spelling Bee is an excellent program to advance spelling skills. Students are expected to learn many new words, their pronunciations, and definitions. There are two levels: the Intermediate Spelling Bee for the 4th and 5th grades and the Advanced Spelling Bee for the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Students participating in the Intermediate Bee are expected to learn about 2,100 words and those in the Advanced Bee are expected to learn around 3,000 words. Students will represent St. John the Baptist in the Archdiocesan Spelling Bee. Students participating in the Archdiocesan Advanced Spelling Bee may be eligible to participate in the State Spelling Bee. Geography Bee Students in grades 5th – 8th grade may participate in the United States National Geographic Bee. The contest is designed to spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography. Student Council Student Council is open to students in grades 5 through 8. Student Council members plan activities to enhance spiritual, academic and social life for the entire student body.
