New Help to Live at Home contract awarded
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Elderly people in Wiltshire will continue to receive the help
they need to live independently at home following the award
of a new contract by Wiltshire Council.
The council's nationally recognised Help to Live at Home
service was created with and for older people. The aim of the
service is to ensure that people receive the help they need,
when they need it and to support, as much as possible,
people to live at home where they feel comfortable. This may
include those people who have chosen to live in sheltered or
extra care accommodation.
Mears Group, which already successfully runs the council's Help to Live at Home service in parts of the
county, has been awarded a contract to provide it in additional areas such as Royal Wootton Bassett,
Calne Cricklade, Malmesbury, Marlborough, Pewsey, Trowbridge and Melksham. The new contract is due
to start from September 2016. Mears Group and Somerset Care at Home will continue to provide services
to their existing customers in other areas of the county.
Young people given apprenticeship advice at workshops
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Year 10 pupils at St. Augustine's Catholic College in Trowbridge were
told about the value and benefits of apprenticeships during a careers day
earlier this month.
Officers and apprentices from Wiltshire Council spoke about the huge
benefits of apprenticeships. The key message from the team was that an
apprenticeship is a real job with a salary, which enables the apprentice to
gain a nationally recognised qualification up to master's degree level.
Pupils were asked whether they would consider doing an apprenticeship
before and after the workshops and responses from those who would
consider this career path rose from 13% to 67% as a result of the
sessions.
Kieran Jenkins and Taylor Jarvis are currently apprentices at Wiltshire Council and shared their
experiences. Kieran is doing a Level 3 Civil Engineering course while working as a bridge technician in the
highways team and Taylor is doing a Level 2 Business Administration course alongside an admin data
support officer role in the planning team, after having completed a two month traineeship. The traineeship
gave her the work experience required for the apprenticeship role and made her stand out above other
applicants.
Key Agreement signed and planning permissions granted
for Army Basing Programme in Wiltshire
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The Army Basing Programme in Wiltshire has taken a major
step forward with the signing of a key document and
agreement on planning permissions this week.
Planning permissions to build 917 Service family homes in
Ludgershall, Bulford and Larkhill and the completion of the
Section 106 agreement which will deliver schools,
community, recreation, waste collection and sports facilities,
a medical facility, road improvements and cycle paths
across Salisbury Plain's communities have been agreed.
The building of the homes will start in summer 2017 in readiness for the main arrival of Service personnel
by 2019.
The programme will bring 4,000 Service personnel along with 3,200 family members to Wiltshire by 2019
as Salisbury Plain becomes the largest military training area in the UK. As part of the programme, 5
RIFLES is moving to Wiltshire this summer and provision of homes and additional school places have
already been made available with extensions at Bulford Kiwi School and St Leonard's Primary.
Don’t be fooled by fake Wiltshire Council call - updated
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
We’re still receiving reports of residents being tricked by
fraudsters. The latest reports involve council tax
payments.
Anything of this nature should be treated with
suspicion as we would never cold call anyone by
telephone or at someone's door. We will also never
request bank details, passwords or pin numbers over
the phone.
These types of calls should be reported to Action Fraud on
0300 123 2040 or via their online reporting system. More information and guidance
Children invited to join the Big Friendly Read
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Children are being invited to sign up to read
six books this summer as part of The Big
Friendly Read, Summer Reading Challenge
2016.
Wiltshire Council is calling all four to 11 year
olds to borrow and read any six library
books over the summer.
The challenge has a new theme each year,
and this year it is delivered in collaboration with
The Roald Dahl Literary Estate to celebrate
100 years of the world's favourite storyteller. It
will feature some of Roald Dahl's best-loved
characters and the amazing artwork of his
principal illustrator, Sir Quentin Blake.
To take part, children can sign up for free at their nearest library. Every child will
receive a special collector's folder after their first book and six special cards as they
borrow and read at least six library books over the summer.
The Big Friendly Read Summer Reading Challenge runs until Saturday 10
September.
