July 2012
Manager’s Message
June has been a very good month
here at MCC. Our membership total as
of June 26th is 406 total memberships.
I am very pleased with our members for
their effort to recruit new members to
our Club. We hope we can maintain this
membership over the winter and into
next year. We are also excited that the
existing members and the new members
are very active with regard to using the
Club and buying food and beverage.
Let’s keep that cycle going right to the
end of the year.
Our pool has seen a lot of use this
season which is a good thing. We are
offering the pool bar on Friday, Saturday
and Sunday for your convenience. In
order to make this work we need your
support. I know our staff would rather
be busy than standing behind the bar do
nothing. We have ordered new grill and
fryer for the pool snack shop, therefore,
limited items on the snack bar menu will
be produced at the snack shop rather
than coming from the main kitchen. This
should improve service for these items
that are very popular. On another note
our pool heater has been working fairly
well over the past month, however, we
are operating on borrowed time as the
heater is rusting away piece by piece.
Bids for a new pool heater range from
$8,500 to $10,500. It is our hope that
we can make it through this summer
with the current unit. We will keep you
posted. Over the past couple of weeks
we have noticed more food being
brought in from outside restaurants.
Please note that food and beverage
cannot be brought into the pool area
from outside sources.
If you play tennis and you haven’t
been to the MCC courts you are missing
out. Our new Tennis Pro Jay
Gruenebaum has done wonders, along
with help from Greg and the grounds
crew and Steve Reed our maintenance
man, to make our courts the best in the
area. The amount of play has increased
tenfold and we are receiving tennis
guest fees for non member use. If you
have time stop by and meet Jay as he is
here every night starting at 5:30. Jay
has an assistant here during the day so
the courts are maintained.
During the month of July we have
several social events planned along with
several golf events. Please watch for
emails and other information on these
events.
As stated earlier June was a busy
month and we expect July to be as busy
so on that note I want to say thanks to
all our members for their support and
patronage of your Club.
See you at the Club,
Wayne

From Jim VanGuilder and the MCC Green’s Department,
“On June 7, our Club had an evaluation visit from the USGA
Turf Department. The USGA Rep, with Greg, toured the
course and offered insight on keeping us in top condition.
Normally this would be at a rather high fee, however it was
taken care of by our membership in the Columbus District
Golf Association.
The biggest concern was with the stress (from the dry conditions) that’s popping up from the extreme heat, especially
on the greens. Our irrigation system is a big part of the
problem, as the old sprinkler heads do not cover equally.
There were scattered dry spots. As recommended, Greg’s
crew hand-watered these areas on the greens and saw
noticeable improvement within two days. We are expecting
their final report soon and hope it will help keep us
green…and disease free!”
With the extremely good weather and course condition,
come some memorable feats: Jim Riley owning a majority of
them. In two different rounds, Mr. Riley knocked in a 9 iron on
#15 for an Eagle 2 and followed that up by “shooting-his-age”
with a smooth 82. Both are rare accomplishments! From the
USGA Junior Qualifier here, our good course and weather
entertained some of the best male juniors in the country, as
Jacob McBride (of North Carolina), handily led the field with
(67,67) 134. The second, and only other qualifier they took
from here, was Brad Dalke (of Texas), 9 behind at 143.
Special “Kudos” though, go to our own Nick Shipley.
Recovering from a sluggish start (78), Nick finished with very
nice 70! His 148 was only five shots back from that second
qualifying spot. Nick’s for real, as he showed at Weatherwax
C.C. in Middletown, Ohio. He finished in the top eight, with a
combined 155, in the Junior PGA Sectional!
Probably most memorable of all though, has to be from
Jerry Nethers, when he canned his second shot on #1
recently. No….he didn’t hole it for an Eagle 2, he actually
“canned” it. Yep, leaking to the right, Jerry’s second shot
caught the over-hanging tree by #8 tee….and dropped
straight down….into the Trash Can! I still have “no report” on
his third shot.
Back to the real feats, Greg Tracey recorded his first holein-one here, on #17, with a perfect 7 iron. Watching proudly
was papa (and Fathers Day Tourney partner) Dee Tracey, as
they took Low Net Honors at 140. Dr. Nikolovski and son
George tied for 2nd Place with George and Chas Manning at
141. Low Gross for the day was 154 from Dan and Scot
Evans. Dr. Nik and son Alex were 2nd at 160, Dan and Mark
Evans 3rd with 165.
Diane Null and Karen Burger partnered-up perfectly in the
Ladies Member-Member to post a field-leading 12 under par
59! Defending Champs, Kim Fleming and Karen Schenk
were just one missed putt back. Joan Kent and Susan Reid
were at 62, tied with Sally Reynolds and (bionic-wristed)
Mary Larimer, for 3rd Place.
Looking ahead: the traditional MCC Mixed 4th of July
Scramble will shotgun at 1:30 Wednesday, following the traditional Pari-Mutuel Betting. And a Team (Cash) Skins Game
always adds to the excitement….so we’re not going to have
one! Just kidding.
July is also traditionally Member-Guest month and the
Ladies are up first. Their
“Shellabration” is set for Wednesday, July 11th at 1:00
(shotgun). Lately they’ve had 50 to 60 players, pretty much
filling the course. The Men start with an optional Practice
Round on Thursday the 12th, leading to their “Invitational at
Moundbuilders CC” Friday and Saturday. Their event will
feature three different 9 hole games Friday and two Saturday,
as well as food, drink, entertainment and Double Hopewell
Points! Speaking of entertainment….We will be entertaining a
group of Judges (in a private outing) on Monday afternoon,
July 16. Then Kay Barton’s “MCC Fore the Cure” Dance
(with the Eddie Polina Band) will entertain us Friday evening,
the 20th.
Lastly, by popular demand, we’re offering a “re-do” of our
Junior Clinic. We’re starting Tuesday, July 31, at 9:30. Rather
than our usual twice a week for three weeks, we’re doing
three times a week (Tues., Wed., Thurs.) for two consecutive
weeks.
We’re still setting records!
