Based on assessment of students’ needs, instruction includes basic grammar and usage, mechanics, sentence structure, and basic writing. Assignments will include the writing of a variety of unified and coherent compositions with evidence of a controlling idea, introduction, body, and conclusion. COURSE COMPETENCIES To successfully complete this course, a student must demonstrate proficiency in all modules. Module 1: Sentence Basics • Identify components of basic sentence construction. • Identify sentence construction as simple, compound, complex, compound-complex. • Identify the eight parts of speech within sentence construction. • Identify sentence fragments, comma splices, and run-on sentences. • Identify and correct sentence construction errors within writings. • Compose writings with a variety of sentence constructions in response to selected readings (minimum 150 words each). Module 2: Grammar and Mechanics Basics • Identify verbs and construct sentences with correct subject/verb agreement and tenses. • Identify prepositional phrases. • Identify pronouns and construct sentences with correct agreement, case, and reference. • Identify and correctly use adjectives and adverbs in sentence construction. • Use commas, semi-colons, apostrophes, colons, and dashes to correctly punctuate sentences. • Identify and use the rules for quotations, capitalization, and spelling. • Apply rules of grammar usage and punctuation in two short writings in response to selected readings (minimum of 250 words each). ENG 031 1 of 3 Revised 4/2016 Effective Fall 2016 Module 3: Writing Process and Essay Development • Identify structure of a paragraph and essay. • Identify point-of-view and compose first and third person responses. • Identify and compose summaries and paraphrases of selected readings. • Compose two paragraphs following all steps of the writing process in response to selected readings for specified subject, audience, and purpose (minimum 300 words each). • Compose a third person essay following all steps of the writing process in response to selected readings (minimum of 450 words). METHODS OF INSTRUCTION Principles will be introduced by the instructors through lecture, presentations, viewing technology, and computer-based training. Additional methods designed for remediation or enrichment will be individually tailored as needed. MINIMAL STANDARDS A grade average of 70 percent is required to satisfactorily complete and enroll in English 032. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Assignments Assignments in this course will include a variety of reading selections and written responses along with contextualized grammar assessment. The course requires two formally assessed writings in each module and one essay in Module III. Each module will include grammar quizzes and an end of module assessment, and there will be a cumulative final exam. Each instructor will provide specific guidelines for his or her class in line with departmental expectations. Late or Missed Assignments Any approved make-up, late, or revised work must be completed in a designated time and manner as directed by the instructor. An instructor may choose not to accept late or missed work or may limit the maximum credit allowed. Other Academic Assistance or Requirements Any student who demonstrates an area of weakness or need for additional help may be referred to the Academic Coaching and Tutoring Center (ACT), Student Services, or to other appropriate resources for assistance. Conferences with the instructor also may be required. Academic Integrity The policies stated in the York Technical College Catalog & Handbook will be enforced. Any student violating these policies will be subject to academic discipline.
