Carolinas Chapter
January 2012
President’s Message
John McDougall
Blair-Duron Restoration
2012 will be an exciting year for all of us; I would like to thank the membership at large for the confidence in me
and the Board of Directors and Officers. We strive to provide the educational, informational and fellowship events
that make us a model organization.
I want to thank our out-going Board member, Mr. Dan Bueker, as well as our out-going Past President - Mr. Jim
Hadley; both have been a tremendous asset to the Chapter. Additionally a warm welcome to our newest allies Mr.
Robert McDowell and Mr. Bill Fortuna.
We have a full calendar planned for 2012, two full day conferences, The ICRI/WCA Spring Classic joint golf
tourney, The WCA/ICRI Sporting Clay Shoot and our Traditional Fall Convention, this year being held in Wilmington.
Our leadership team serves to provide programs and events to suit the membership, if there is a program, topic,
speaker, event you want to see, please let us know. All of our Board members are approachable and available; their contact info can be
found on our website www.icricarolinas.org. We encourage members to become active at the committee level, planning events, helping at our
outings – if you have a desire to grow your participation please let me know how I can help you get more from your ICRI Carolinas experience.
Looking ahead to the New Year, please consider supporting your Chapter, we have an excellent sponsorship program with support levels to
meet your budget and needs. Please feel free to contact me or Paul Farrell, our Sponsorship Committee Chair.
As your Membership Renewal forms come out from ICRI National’s staff, please be sure to select Carolinas as your home chapter, it is not a
pre-populated form but we are easy to find.
Being the youngest person elected to either serve on the Board, or serve as President I cant stress enough the value this organization has
provided to me. It has been among the most rewarding aspects of my career to learn from our past leadership. Yes, the concrete repair
technical education is undoubtedly world class, our speakers and presentations are second to none, but the overwhelming value for me has
been the professional development.
I encourage you to engage your younger team members; the opportunity for them to learn from the industries most respected designers,
contractors, vendors and manufacturers is not replicable in the office or classroom setting.
John
For nearly three years the Carolinas Chapter has been pursuing the Mobile Concrete Lab (MCL) of the Federal Highway Administration to
be the headliner at a conference. Thanks to the persistence of Board member Tara Cavalline of UNC-Charlotte, the deal is done and the
MCL will at our Spring Conference at the Hilton Inn Garden Suites across from South Pointe Mall in Durham, one of our favorite and best
attended conference sites. The MCL will be on-site for two days, providing the opportunity for small groups to walk-through and see the latest
and greatest advances in concrete repair. In addition, Jagan Gudimettla, P.E., MCL Project Engineer and his staff will be able to offer live
demonstrations on dowel bar alignment and slab thickness measurement.
“AGING INFRASTRUCTURE: STATE OF THE HIGHWAYS AND BRIDGES ”
In addition to the MCL, we have a great line-up of other speakers: a two-part
“Bridge Preservation Workshop” on the NCDOT Bridge Program with Mike
Summers and Load Testing and Corrosion Testing on Bridges with Satrajit Das,
PhD, PE, both of WSP Sells in Cary, a Legal Update with ICRI Legal Counsel
Andy Anderson and a presentation on Shotcrete with Ray Schallom, Shotcrete
Consultant of RCS Consulting & Construction of Ripley, WV.
Federal Highway Administration’s Mobile Concrete
Laboratory (MCL), managed by the Office of
Pavement Technology introduces federal, state and
local transportation personnel to the state-of-the-art
concrete technology in materials selection and mixture
design, as well as field and laboratory testing. In an
effort to bridge the gap between research and the
field, the MCL accomplishes this technology transfer in
one of several ways:
By conducting on-site field testing at construction
projects to supplement state highway agency (SHA)
testing,
By training SHA personnel to get “hands-on”
experience with new technologies and test equipment,
By showcasing equipment and technology at industry
conferences, symposiums, and SHA facilities to
familiarize transportation personnel with state-ofthe-art technology,
By providing an equipment loan program where SHA
personnel can borrow equipment for various lengths
of time after having been trained in its use by MCL
staff.
The current focus of the MCL includes high
performance concrete (HPC) for pavements and
bridges, nondestructive testing, and performance
related specifications (PRS). An active partnership with
manufacturers, contractors, industry associations and
academia is encouraged and maintained in all of the
MCL’s activities.
