Career Beginnings~ · AS~~ Future Plans of Career Beginnings Students My immediate future plans are to graduate from Shafter High School. I hope that I can receive a couple of scholarships to Bakersfield College and then go on to a four year university like UCLA. If I can't get into UCLA, I plan to attend Fresno State University. I am planning on majoring in Psychology. I would like to become a psychiatrist someday. I have also considered majoring in law. Nevertheless, I do not want to be in a university very long. My second career goal is to study graphic arts. I know that my art work will never be good enough to sell. So, instead of drawing, I plan to create my work on a computer. In conclusion, I would like to live to be 125 years old. Brenda Astorga Wasco High School Class of '97 After graduating from high school I plan to go to college. I want to major in Criminology. I have wanted to become a police officer since I was little. For the last two summers, I have worked for the Shafter Police Deparhnent in order to get a feel for the environment. I do not know what it is that makes me want to become a police officer. Sometimes I think that it is because of all the excitement, as well as getting the chance to help others. I believe this draws me closer to becoming a police officer. Inside I know that I can do this job, but I also know that it is dangerous, and that anything could happen at any time. Nevertheless, I am willing to take a good challenge anytime. If I change my mind about becoming a police officer, I want to go to the Marines for a while and become a mechanical technician. But, I'm not to sure about that right now. My biggest plan of all, is to graduate from high school, and be proud of myself as well as make others feel proud of me. I feel that it is important that everyone accomplishes all of their goals, no matter what they have planned for themselves. I plan to accomplish all of my goals no matter what stands in my way. Angela Atencio Shafter High School Class of '97 6 I plan to do many things in my future. I hope to graduate from high school and go to college. I hope to become a lawyer and have a good peaceful life. I hope to see the other side of the world. I have been very fortunate to have my brother and sisters set good examples for me. I hope to follow in their footsteps and make my parents proud. Maria Ayon McFarland High School Class of '97 I'm really not sure what I'm going to do in the future. Nevertheless, I do know that I am going to go to college. Exactly what I'm going to major in, I really do not know. I'm interested in business. So, I think that might be my major. The college I have decided to go to is CSUB because it is a good university. It is also close to my home. I plan to earn my Bachelor and Master degrees. While earning my bachelor's I would like to settle down and start my own family. I would like to have two boys and two girls. I do not know if I should live in Shafter or Bakersfield. It all depends on which schools I think would be best for my children. By the time I decide to start my family, I'd also like to have my own business. In the future, I hope to have a very successful business. Aliana Buenrostro Shafter High School Class of '97 7 My future plans are to graduate from McFarland High School. After graduating from high school, my next goal is to go to college. The three colleges I would like to attend are: California State University, Bakersfield, San Diego State University, or California State University, Long Beach. California State University, Bakersfield will probably be my first choice, because it's closer to home. I wouldn't have to worry about paying rent. The three main career jobs I would like to have are the following: electrician, probation officer, and FBI agent. More than likely, I will become a probation officer. I would also like to get married and have a family . But, first I would like to graduate from high school and complete my college education. Cenobio Cabrera McFarland High School Class of '97 My first goal this year is to graduate from high school because I didn't graduate from 8th grade. I plan on becoming an F.B.I. agent, if God allows me to. I also plan on going to Paris in January of '97. I also hope to play football this year and become an AllAmerican Wide-Receiver. I am glad to be healthy and to have my mom and dad still living. I am also glad to have 3 brothers and one sister, well, a first sister-in-law. I also plan on following in my brother's footsteps. Francisco Javier Cano McFarland High School Class of '97 8 J I would like to become an elementary teacher and think it will suit me very well since I like kids a lot. The most important thing to me right now is to finish high school and go to college. I've thought about moving away, but I realize that I'm not the kind of person who can live without her family. I have decided to attend CSUB as soon as I get out of high school. I have already experienced working with kids. I tutored kids at my school and it was a great experience. They were first graders and at that time I was in eighth grade. I don't know why, but I think we had a lot in common. Usually, the teacher would ask me to read them books and let them read too; this was my favorite part because I enjoyed helping them and teaching them how to pronounce words. Other times, we would play games using the alphabet letters. It was really funny because sometimes I would have to make the sounds of the letters and they would always laugh at me. After high school, I will come to CSUB and major in education. I know it won't be easy, because I will really have to organize. But that's what college is about. Sometimes we have to give up something in order to attain what we want. Elsa Cardoso Arvin High School Class of '97 My career goal for the future is to become a computer repairman. This job suites me because I like fixing things and being around computers. Also, I like to travel a lot, so I hope my job will be at different places around the country. The life that I expect when I accomplish my goal will be that I have a nice comfortable home and a happy family. An everyday situation for me will be that I will get up in the morning, go to work, and then come home to my family and spend time with them. I plan to attend a university for four years to acquire my Bachelor of Science degree. At this point, I do not know what university I plan on attending, but it will be in either Texas, Arizona, or California. I will study computers to help enhance my skills to become a computer repairman. Rudy Cavazos McFarland High School Class of '97 9 My plans for the future are somewhat set. I know that the first thing I want to do is graduate from high school. Graduating from high school is one of my main goals. After graduating, I plan to attend college. I haven't made up my mind as to what college I would like to attend. Nevertheless, what I might do is attend a college here in California then eventually, transfer to a college in Texas. Since I might move to Texas after high school, I will probably be transferring. The college I would like to attend is Texas University in Austin. My second option is a fashion institute in the state of Texas. I plan to major in Business and Advertising. I like to work with creative things. I guess that's why I like advertising. My interest in fashion designing comes from enjoying to put things together. I enjoy for instance, clothing and making something new come out of it. As for life after college,· I will defer on that until I secure my job. I hope that my plans for the future tum up the way they were intended. If not, I know I will be okay with whatever comes my way. I will deal with it in a positive way. Myra Cortez Wasco High School Class of '97 My soul is like a draining hour glass, that hides beyond the clouds; It hovers over the changing ocean currents, that gets blown away by a touch of wind; It moves slowly and keeps on hiding until the last bit of sand runs out. Myrian Cortez Wasco High School Class of '97 10 In the future, I would like to become a District Attorney. This has been my goal since I was a little girl. TV shows and movies about people fighting against each other for rights in courthouses have inspired in me a love for law. In addition, I am a really talkative person and argue a lot. I believe these skills will come in handy in the courthouse. I would also like to experience the miracle of having a baby. My hopes of becoming a mother are important too, but I think they can come after I have achieved my ultimate goal. And that goal is to be a successful DA or a private practice attorney. Elisa Eseberre Shafter High School Class of '97 My goals are to someday become a teacher because I believe that if we educate the future generation we will live in a better society and then maybe we can compete with other countries in the high tech fields. Fernando Fernandez McFarland High School Class of '97 11 After I graduate from Wasco High, I'm going to work during the summer then enroll at UC Davis for the fall semester. After I get my BA, I will then get my MA in counseling. Then after that I plan to work for a few years before getting married. In the morning when I wake up and recall my dreams this is what I see: I'm looking out the second story window watching my husband in the family station wagon drive up the little road leading to our hacienda on a hill. He parks it next to my dark purple Chevy fullsize 1500 extended cab truck. I've just finished putting my three year old to bed and can hear my twins Jr. and Rosalinda running out the door to hug their father screaming, "Daddy!" I walk down the stairs to see the love of my life get tackled by his two six year olds. "Careful Mija, I don't want you to hurt yourself." "Paul, you act as if I'm made of glass, this isn't the first time I've been pregnant. Guess what? I've decided what I want to name our new baby girl: Rebecca Mauren." "You're naming her after your sister, that's a beautiful name ..... " Veronica Gaona Wasco High School Class of '97 In the future, I will become a high school history teacher. I enjoy reading and learning about history. I would like to be working with teenagers in the classroom. In addition, I see myself married to Eduardo, but without children. I plan on having the car of my dreams as well as having my own house. I also hope to visit Hawaii someday. In the future I will learn to dance and also learn from my mistakes. Furthermore, I might understand my parents. Maybe I'll even get along with my sister. Bertha Garrido Arvin High School Class of '97 12 In the future I want to have a business in photography. The reason for this is that I love taking pictures and I believe that you should do what you love. I know it will be hard, but I can do it. I would have three employees to work with me. I think the less people there are the more family atmosphere there is. I would like my employees to be caring, considerate, and have a good sense of humor. Meranda Garza McFarland High School Class of '97 Well, I'm going to be a senior at McFarland High. I've always wanted to be a nurse. Next year I'll be taking a vocational training class during my senior year. It'll be for two class periods and if you take that class for one school year, you will become a certified nurse. At least that's a start to my career. I do plan on finishing my education, but the thing is that I want to take technical training classes. But, most training schools don't have nursing courses. I want to move to Seattle, Washington, to get the rest of my education there. I think it will be great to be in a different environment. I also have a back up plan which is to become a pediatrician, so I can help young children. If the training schools don't have the courses I need, then I will enter college. I think I'll be a great nurse because I'm a very caring person. Everyone tells me I have a big heart. I want people to feel that it is always possible to get well, also to be happy. I love to see people smile, and to hear them laugh. I would like to be a person people can trust. I would like people to look up to me for help. I want to be a hero to someone just because I saved their life. I would just like to be the person who someone would just say thank you to. That is my future goal. Michelle Gonzales McFarland High School Class of '97 13 In the future, I plan to complete my high school education. After high school, I would like to attend California State University, Bakersfield. I am thinking about this university because it really isn't far from home. I feel that I am not ready to leave home because I still depend on my parents for everything. I am thinking about joining the Nursing program to become a Registered Nurse here at CSUB. I plan to start and finish my general education at CSUB. While working on my general education, I would also like to volunteer at a local hospital. This experience will help me get an idea of what being a Registered Nurse is all about. After I have completed my general education here I would like to transfer to the University of California, Davis to graduate. In order to attend UC Davis I must have very good grades and I plan on having the best grades that I can possibly have. After graduating as a Registered Nurse, I would like to enter the work force. While working I would like to continue my education. I am thinking about continuing school and becoming a gynecologist or a pediatrician. Elena Gonzalez Arvin High School Class of '97 My future plans are to finish high school with good grades. I would like to attend college after high school to get a better education and to get a better job. The college I would like to go to would need to be specialized in my area of interest. The job I would work in would be a high paying job. The money I would earn would go to my parents for all of the years they have supported me. In my future I also see a possible marriage. Nevertheless, my wedding plans will need to be on hold until I have a lot of money. In addition, I would like to have about three children. My family will live in a two story home. I have always dreamed of having such a home. When I become old, my plans are to play golf for the rest of my life. I will live on my retirement and social security. After having had all that I have wanted, I will die a happy man. Robert Gonzalez McFarland High School Class of '97 14 What are you doing after high school? This question has been asked to me a thousand times. I'm glad that I can give them a straight forward and honest answer. Some people don't know what they're going to do after high school. Students in college are still clueless of what they want to be. I believe students should figure out what they want to be by their senior year, so they can start planning early in life. Right after high school I plan to go to Sonoma State University. I will study in the field of physical therapy. While going to college, I will find a parttime job to support myself, because financial aid won't pay for everything. I'm going to share an apartment or a dorm with a friend who plans on going to the same university. After college I hope to start working in a hospital and then start my own practice in Hawaii. Some of these plans might seem like fantasies or a little too detailed to come true, but these are my goals and dreams. One day I plan to achieve all of them and even more. Angie V. Gutierrez Wasco High School Class of '97 My future plans are to attend to go to a university in California were I can better my education. I plan to attend two years, because the career I want to enter only requires two years. If every thing goes to plan, I will be a highway patrolman or a policeman in Bakersfield. In this last year of high school, I'm going to make the best of it by getting good grades and also doing research on my time so by the time I graduate I will know what field I would like to go into to and quickly get on the road to success. Money on the other hand might be a problem, but if it is then getting loans and scholarships is the only answer to the problem. While attending college, I will have a part-time job as a security guard or a box boy in a local grocery market. If I don't attend a four year university, I will attend BC so that way I won't have to pay rent because I will be living with my parents, and I know they would like me to stay longer. My future plans seem like trying to find out the easy way but at least I'm planning to go to college, and maybe while in college I'll change my mind about what field to go into. Jaime Hernandez McFarland High School Class of '97 15 In the future I will be 22. I see myself as a college student. I see myself as a medical assistant. I see myself driving my own car. I see myself as a responsible adult. After high school, I plan to attend Bakersfield College or California State University, Bakersfield. There are two career paths I would like to purse. I would like to become a registered nurse as well as an accountant. To me, being a college graduate will be a dream come true. Since, I will be a first generation high school graduate, I will also be a first generation college graduate. I would really like to do this in the future in order to help out my parents. Mercedes Hernandez Highland High School Class of '97 My future plans are to graduate from high school. After graduating from high school, my next goal is to go to college. More than likely, I will become a correctional officer. I would also like to get married and have a family: But, first I would like to graduate from high school and complete my college education. Aaron Herring Wasco High School Class of '97 CAREER BEGINNINGS PROOF. POSITIVE. 16 In the future, I plan on becoming an architect. I have always wanted to be an architect because I like to build things. I would like to build a skyscraper some day. I would also like to become a drafter. I like to draw in my spare time. Drawing is one of my favorite hobbies. I think that with my drawing skills I would be able to draw out floor plans which I could use for being an architect. Being an architect would be a short term goal for me. I would also like to become an art teacher in the future. I would like to become an art teacher because I like to draw and I like to work with other people especially with little kids. I would like to teach elementary students. I think they are easier to work with and I would like to show them different things. This would be my long term goal. In the future I would also like to get married and have two kids. I would try my best to be a good dad and help them out if they have a problem. I will teach them right from wrong. I will give them what they need to grow up strong. Antonio Jacobo McFarland High School Class of '97 What are my plans in the future? My plans in the future would be to graduate from high school. Then after that I would go to college. I would like to major in the medical field. I'm currently taking a medical assistant class through ROP. This class will help me decide what I really want. In addition, I would also like to become a cosmetologist. The cosmetology certificate will allow me to work as a cosmetologist while paying for my medical assistant classes. Furthermore, I would like to go to Mexico and visit my relatives. Going to Mexico will help me relax and really think what it is that I want to do. These are my plans in the near future. Lupe Jauregui Highland High School Class of '97 17 My future plans are important to me and to my family. I want everybody to be happy with my plans. I would first like to finish high school and upon completion, I would like to attend college. During the school years I have left, I would like to get married and start a family. My personality and patience are what will help me overcome difficult situations, as they have in the past. As for my life, this specific career will challenge me with different things each day. I want to help the community. To do this I am willing to devote my time and effort in assisting those in need of nursing. It will make ·me happy; I am going to be doing something I enjoy. I plan to succeed in school and further my education. While going to high school, I want to take a training course in which will be a good hands-on experience. Education is the key to success. I shall be committed and dedicated. Angela Leal Wasco High School Class of '97 CAREER BEGINNINGS PROOF. POSITIVE. 18 My soul is like an hour glass, time slowly running out like limitless bright colored clouds; Like the ocean currents always moving and never stopping; Like the boundless wind, which doesn't know where to go; My soul is just a part of time in an hour glass looking at what goes on in life. Joel Lopez McFarland High School Class of '97 I have not decided what I want to do after I graduate from high school. Nevertheless, I do have an interest in some careers. I'm interested in being a dentist, a veterinarian, a computer technician, a clothes designer, and a hair stylist. A dentist earns a lot of money and I would like to encourage people to take care of their teeth and hygiene. Because I love animals, I would love to learn how to take care of them and their health. Furthermore, a computer technician is very competitive. Because I like to explore with computers, this field seems to be very interesting. In addition, I know how to draw and I know a little bit about fashion. I would be very proud of myself if I could design my own type of clothing. I am also interested in becoming a hair stylist. The way people fix their hair says a lot about their personality. In addition, having a nice hair style makes people look and feel good about themselves. It would give me great pleasure to make girls look beautiful. Mary J. Lopez Shafter High School Class of '97 CAREER BEGINNINGS PROOF. POSITIVE. 19 My career is to become a successful psychologist. This career will help me get to know and learn more about the way people think and act. I am not only going to help myself in this career, but I am also going to help out those people who need someone to talk to and help find solutions to their problems. The reason I chose this career is because it is interesting to learn about the way people think, act and why they do the things they do. This career will help me in becoming a better caring person. I plan to go to a four year college after high school. I have good grades, and I read books that have to do with my career. I also want to attend some workshops about stress, and take some classes toward a minor in science. Jose Lozano McFarland High School Class of '97 My plans for the future are to graduate from high school. Upon graduating from high school, I plan to study sports medicine. I don't want to go far away when I go to college. I want to stay close to my family. I plan to live on my own when I am capable of maintaining myself. I don't have any plans for marriage at the time. I want to live in a big house with my family, somewhere in a nice place where there isn't too much violence. I guess I have many plans for the future. I don't know if this is going to happen. Nevertheless, I would be glad if it did. Lorenzo Lozano McFarland High School Class of '97 20 Upon graduating from high school, I would like to attend college and get my teaching degree. I want to become an elementary teacher or have my own day care center. I like children so I suppose the best thing for me to do is to become a first or second grade teacher. If my plans of becoming an elementary school teacher are not realized, I will open my own day care center, where children can do a lot of different activities and play games. I think children are cute and smart in their own weird way. By teaching them things, I will also be learning from them. The highest grade I'll teach in elementary is third grade. While all of this is happening, I want to go home to a loving husband, and maybe two kids; a boy and a girl. Their names will be Blaine and Idalis. Sonia Luque Highland High School Class of '98 My career plans for the future are to be a pediatrician for infants and toddlers. From the time I was fifteen, when my cousin had a baby and I took care of her, I have wanted to take care of young children. This job will improve my skills with children of all ages and prepare me for the time when I will have my own children. This job would fit my personality in many ways: I'm a caring, loving person, and that's what children need. I want to do this job because I know that I will be able to make a difference in other lives. I am willing, and wanting, to be a person that children can look up to. This will enhance their learning as well as mine. Getting warm love and support from any child is a great fulfillment. To get the education to be a pediatric nurse, I will go to college and major in Child Psychology. Then I will have to get my license to work with children, and that requires that I take CPR and swimming lessons. All these things will make a difference in someone else's life. Quinta Lyons Bakersfield High School Class of '97 21 My name is Jose Magana and I am going to the NBA. Jose Magana Shafter High School Class of '97 My name is Mario Magana and I am also going to the NBA. Mario Magana Shafter High School Class of '97 ' I. 22 When I started high school I thought about my future plans. My plans are to attend CSUB. I really did not know what I wanted to major in but as I was going through a couple of career books, I became interested in Business Administration with a concentration in banking or accounting. Business Administration seemed a lot of fun to me. From all the different courses that Business Administration has I seem to like Banking and Accounting because I love money and I also love math. The way I see things, the things I like are a challenging life and challenging math classes. Another reason why I want to be good in life is I want my parents to be proud of me. I feel so happy when I receive an award and I know that my parents are proud of me. My other future plans are to have a family; meaning getting married. I know when you get married people say it is a big responsibility because of the bills, food, etc. That is why when I get married I will probably be more mature and know what I will be doing. When I graduate from Shafter High School, I know I will be stepping into the real world. Come to think about it, I think I should stop because I'm getting nervous. Maricela Mares Shafter High School Class of '97 I am Chicana I am brown by suerte and proud by choice. I am grateful to have what I have and be who I am. I am disrespectful to people who disrespect me. I am a soccer fanatic. I believe that guys should have more respect toward girls because all guys are turning into dogs. In 5 years I see myself married to a rich white old man and a firme sancho beside me. I believe in God. Carmen Martinez Shafter High School Class of '97 23 I'm looking forward to going to college and majoring in Criminal Justice. I'd like to go to the University of San Diego, not only because it's by the beach, but also because that's where I was born and where I would like to live. I chose Criminal Justice because I am interested in becoming either an attorney or a correctional officer. I'd like to go into one of these fields because I love to argue, stick to my beliefs, and fight for my principles. And, I believe that by pursuing these career choices I will be able to express my ideas and beliefs. I want to become a more intelligent and independent woman. The ideal life for me, would be one in which I'd be a success, complete my education, and land a good paying job with good benefits. I see myself in twenty years as a married woman with a wonderful husband, two kids, an education and a successful job as an attorney (with my own beautiful horne, two cars, and a swimming pool in my backyard). Yvonne Martinez Shafter High School Class of '97 After graduating from high school I plan to attend beauty school. I would like to become a cosmetologist. I would like to become a cosmetologist because I want to learn how to cut, color, and fix hair. In addition, being a cosrnotologist will help me in taking good care of my own skin. As a professional cosrnotologist, I could work with the rich and famous . After completing beauty school, I would like to start a second career in Fashion Designing, where I can apply my drawing and creativity skills. I could also become very famous and earn a lot of money. As a fashion designer, I will be able to express my ideas, and thoughts. Ana Molina Shafter High School Class of '97 24 When I graduate from high school I plan to go to college to become a registered nurse. I want to become an RN because I think it is a very rewarding job. Being able to help others when they are in need always makes me feel good. After I become an RN, I want to work in home health. I'm going to work for two years and save money so that I can travel around South America. I want to see Argentina, Venezuela, and Brazil. Then I hope to marry the man that I love, have two children, and live a successful and fortunate life. Having a good job will make me independent and give me high self-confidence. When I was growing up I never needed anything, because my parents were smart enough to plan ahead. I want to live a comfortable life and be able to provide everything for my children. Refugia Mora Shafter High School Class of '97 My career plans for the future include many things, but there is one in particular that I am going to set my mind on: that is to be a Certified Public Accountant. It fits my personality because I like working with numbers. I could use my math skills and at the same time try to strengthen them. I want this career because of the fact that, not only am I good in math, but I also get along with many people. I will provide for myself and my family. It will be very challenging, and I really think that's what I need. I know I have to study and work hard to be what I want to be but I know deep inside that I will do it. I will have to take a lot of classes and courses, but I know I can handle them. That is, if I do not get married after high school! Heidi Nava Wasco High School Class of '97 ••••• ...... ••••• ••••• •••• 25 My soul is like the sand in an hour glass; It's like the calm currents in the ocean, a free bird roaming everywhere; When you are spending a good day at the park; like a child in a candy store. Alicia Ozuna McFarland High School Class of '97 My future plans are to first graduate from high school and enter a four year university. I would like to major in criminology. After school, I would like to enter the California Department of Corrections and become a correctional officer. Nevertheless, who knows what the future holds for me. Five years from now, my life, as I know it, will be totally different. I might have a steady job, or I could be living on the streets. I might even see some of my closest friend's die, just over some dumb thing. I might even be dead, but I might still be alive. I hope to be in college or already out. I could even be over seas in Japan or something like that. One thing I know for sure is that I would like to start a family. Getting married maybe having some kids, a dog, a nice little kitty with some hamsters would be ideal. Hopefully I'll have a nice wife, because I don't want one that would end up beating me. Whatever the future holds, I will be close to home, because I start to miss my parents after a while. Gilbert Pacheco McFarland High School Class of '97 26 After graduating from high school I would like to attend Cal State University, Bakersfield and become an elementary teacher. I like to work with young people. I took a class that helped me to see what classes a teacher needs to take. I have chosen this career because my parents didn't go to school and they had a lot of problems with writing and reading. This is why I want to help others who need help. I will use all my special talents in reading, science, English, and mathematics. I know that one day I will be prepared for this career. I'm going to take all the classes I have to take in high school. I will take two years of math, four years of English CP, two years of science, and Spanish. Alma Perales McFarland High School Classs of '97 Autographs 27 In the near future, I plan to attend Oral Roberts University or any other Christian college of my choice here in California. I want to become a teacher. In five years, I'll still be taking college requirements which will lead me into secondary level teaching. Eventually, I would like to work my way into becoming a counselor. Nevertheless, no mater where I'm at in life, I will never forget my faith in GOD. I will still be in contact with my church, and help them in any way I can. I plan to be a part of street rallies, youth conventions, camp meetings etc. I want to have something to do with Youth Ministry. Reaching out to young people that need JESUS CHRIST. Five years from now, I plan to continue working on becoming a MAN of GOD. He has called me. Steven Ramirez McFarland High School Class of '97 I have never really planned for my future because I have no idea of how it will be. Nevertheless I have hopes. As a career, I hope it will involve something in the field of robotics. I would like to work in robotics because it really facinates me. I would like to build something that humans have never seen. Something that will help mankind for the better. I don't see myself raising a family in the near future because I still have many things I would like to accomplish before starting a family. Cristian Ramos Highland High School Class of '97 28 My plans are very important to me. These plans determine what I am going to do for a living. Upon graduating from high school I would like to attend Fresno State University or California State University Bakersfield. I would like to major in Business Administration. In addition, I plan to get into the field of Liberal Studies. I will keep myself busy in my spare time by participating with folkloric dance groups. Once I complete my college education, I plan to travel to many countries. Traveling is something I have always wanted to do. I would also like to help out my parents. I would like them to relax from all of the hard work they have done. Diana Ramos Wasco High School Class of '97 My plan for the future is to go to school somewhere and become a mechanic. I enjoy working with my hands and I also enjoy working on cars. Hopefully, one day I will get the skills I need to design the cars instead of just working on them, or one day opening my own shop and becoming my own boss. I want to learn all about the different machines that are used in the trade, and all the tools used to fix the cars. Learning to design them will also provide me with a higher paying job that will set me off better in life. Working with cars is what I enjoy so I think cars are going to have a lot to do with my plans, because they are never going to stop making new ones, there is always going to be a demand for professionals who know how to work on automobiles. Technology is getting more advanced as the years go by so we need to advance our minds also. Gerardo Ramos McFarland High School Class of '97 Mr. Bigwrench 29 My short term future plan is to graduate from high school. Upon graduating from high school, I would like to attend a four year university and maintain a decent grade point average. I would like to become a successful lawyer and be part of an organization that protects Mexican-American rights. I plan to do this with dedication and persistence. I will fight for rights that are often forgotten. Defending rights will be my language. I will speak of equal opportunity, and equal rights. People will no longer settle for less. They deserve equal rights because they are part of the American dream and "we" are America's future. Sara Raya Shafter High School Class of '97 My future will consist of a few things which will be happiness, wealth, and peace. I plan to go to to college after I graduate from high school and pursue a career as a probation officer. Around the age of 25, I will start to establish my family. All of my accomplishments that I have set my sights on are dedicated to my parents and sister for motivating me and encouraging me to go for whatever I want and for reminding me that anything is possible. Debby Renteria McFarland High School Class of '97 My plans for the future depend on many things in the present. So far I have decided I want to go to a junior college somewhere in California, preferably at Bakersfield College, because right now it's the college I know the most about. I plan to become a probation officer because it's a career that really interests me. It's a career where I will be dealing with people I can relate to from my past experiences. I also think that being a probation officer will put me in a good position financially. I will have to study very hard to become what interests me. I will start by going to college and pursuing my goals. Jesse Renteria McFarland High School Class of '97 30 .. My soul is like sand running through an hour glass; It is blown by the boundless wind that has ended in the ocean current; But does not evaporate in the limitless blue skies. j Everardo Reyes McFarland High School Class of '97 The past you can do nothing about, but the future is the moment that awaits to be prepared for. As I look beyond everyone else's expectations of me, I strive to reach my own. My future house, I do not know what it will look like, but it will be a home. I will provide my family with the things I never had, but especially with the things that were given to me. Because of the vastly different experiences that life has put me through, I know and understand that I live in this world for a reason. I have learned (and am still learning) to face the challenges in life, because in the end I am a stronger person. It is with the strength that God has provided me that I know I will reach my future goals. After high school graduation, I plan to attend a junior college, then transfer to a Christian university where I will major in education and become an elementary school teacher. All I know is that for me "to live is Christ, and to die is gain." I pray that all of you discover your reason for existence and I sincerely wish you the best throughout your lives. Maria Reza Wasco High School Class of '97 Snapshots 31 I have lots of plans for my future. One of my biggest is to become a medical assistant. I like to work and communicate with people and help my community in any way I can. I have a valuable skill that will help me throughout my life: I am bilingual and am a very strong person. Being a medical assistant will give me the chance to know more about the diseases that surround us in our world nowadays. Also, I know that one day I will be well prepared to do this type of job for my community. The way I plan to get there is, first of all, to graduate from McFarland High School. Then I will attend a college that offers the classes I need--math, terminology, laboratory skills, and the history of English. I like to help people. Angie E. Rodriguez McFarland High School Class of '97 I am a person with dreams that wants to make something out of my life. Flor Rodriguez McFarland High School Class of '97 32 I have two major plans for the future. First of all, , if I find a way to get a good scholarship, I plan to attend college right after I graduate from high school. I am thinking of becoming a fireman or a police officer. Nevertheless, I am still not sure which college I will attend. If I am not able to get a good scholarship, I plan to join the Army. My parents say that it is in my blood to be a police officer or a soldier. My great grandfather, Maximo Gonzalez, was the general of a squad of troops in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. By joining the Army for two years and under the GI Bill, I can get up to thirty thousand dollars for any college. As a result, I think that with the knowledge learned in the Army and the money granted after service, my future will be in pretty good shape. Guillermo Rodriguez Shafter High School Class of '97 In the future I plan to be very successful. I hope to become a doctor and help many people in the best way possible. Working in medicine will help me get involved with today's world and possibly learn new things. I believe this fits my personality because I am very responsible, friendly, patient, and understanding. I think I am very hardworking. I want to be a doctor for several reasons. First of all, I enjoy meeting new people. I love to work and communicate with them. Second, I like to experience new events and ideas. Third, I hope to be recognized for my abilities. After graduating from high school, I plan to further my education by attending a college or university. I want to attend UCLA or Fresno State. I plan on being very responsible and to do my best in everything. Esmeralda Rosas Wasco High School Class of '97 CAREER BEGINNINGS EVERYONE'S FUTURE HAS TO START SOMEWHERE 33 My plans for the future are to go to college and earn a degree in computer science. I have already learned how to use the spreadsheets, databases, and word processing. My interests are to learn more about the Power Macintosh, and IBM. I have liked computers since I was in the fifth grade. I learned to type quickly; I typed up to 40 words per minute by the lOth grade. I beat almost everybody in my class at typing out of a book. My teacher said I had potential to be whatever I wanted to be so, I decided to be a Computer Programmer. I want to get a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. First, I need to change my study skills and habits because I tend to talk too much in class. Jose Rosas Shafter High School Class of '97 My future plans are to continue my education in school to reach my major, which is medical assistant. For right now, my goals are to do an outstanding job in Career Beginnings. I want to meet new friends from out of town like Shafter, McFarland and Wasco. Having friends from other schools is something nice and special because you get to learn things from where they live. My major goals are to graduate from Highland High School next year. From there I want to continue at BC, then transfer to California State University, Bakersfield. The reason I want to start at BC is because I want to get used to college and the way the system works. I know that BC is different than Cal State but at least I would know what to expect in my future. I want to continue my education and graduate from CSUB. I know Cal State is a good school and it's local. Right now I don't want to go out of town because I know I'm not prepared. When I know I'm ready to move on I would gladly continue my education and keep on getting a higher degree in the medical field. The reason I've chosen to go into the medical field is because I like to work with patients and help them out with their health problems. I like to be involved with medicine, patients and some risk. So, I thought being involved in the medical field would be great for me. For right now I just want to do my best in school and reach my major which is very important to me and my family. It's important to my family because I'm the first one the family that wants to continue on to college. I know my parents will be proud of me and will support me on anything I decide to do. I don't want to fail my parents, myself and waste time and 34 regret it later. I want to do the best that I can and be a winner and successful. Gabriela Rubio Highland High School Class of '97 The thing I am really good at is construction. I want a career which is good for me. There are a lot of things to be accomplished before you can be a contractor. I already have many of the required skills. I know how to roof houses and I also know how to apply wiring to any house or building. The thing that is the hardest to do is to make a concrete sidewalk; it takes lots of work and experience to do that. Lots of people have told me that I have the talent to be almost anything I want in this life. If I finish high school my life is going to be complicated for a number of reasons. I will have to go to college and work to support a family. But if I don't go to college, it will be hard trying to find a good job to support my family with. I plan on going to college so I can make a success out of my life. The real world is hard for all who are not prepared. Cornelio Ruiz Shafter High School Class of '97 I would like to graduate from high school and go to college to become a doctor. Mercedes Salinas Shafter High School Class of '97 35 My name is Cristina Sanchez and this program has been a great experience. I hope it helps me later on to be successful. I plan to make something of myself. My goals are to go to a great college. Cristina Sanchez McFarland High School Class of '97 My plan for the future is to become a sports therapist. I believe that I am suited for this job because I like helping injured athletes. I am really good with my hands and I know how to heal some of the injuries that people get nowadays. I also like to travel, so it will be perfect for me because I can be a team doctor and be able to travel with them. I want to do this because I feel that it will give me a good experience in different places. I think that this is a very good chance for me to get to know the world. I imagine that I will have about three summer homes and two winter homes. I will need them due to all of the traveling that I will be doing while being a sports doctor for a professional basketball team. I plan to accomplish this by attending college and getting my Masters in Sports Medicine. I'll look for an opportunity in the NBA. Julio Sanchez McFarland High School Class of '97 36 Upon graduating from high school, I plan to go to California State University, Bakersfield. I've always liked math and science, but I think I would rather major in math. Numbers are very fun to work with. Someday becoming a very successful accountant, is my biggest goal in life. I think it's a good career because not only will being an accountant leave me a lot of money, but it will give me the opportunity to do what I enjoy, work with numbers. To me, it is very important to have money in the future. Not only will money secure my well being, but also that of my family. I would like to give my mom all she has always wanted, because she sure deserves it. I would like for my little sister to go to the best college in the United States, and be a very successful and important person. I know that no one could ever care about me as much as they do. I would like to serve as her role model. I want her to have someone to look up to. In addition to becoming a successful accountant, I want to be an example to my little sister. Laura Soto Highland High School Class of '97 As I grow older, the things I would like from life change. Right now the goals I have are to become a psychiatrist or counselor. Of course, I will probably have to go to school for a million years, but I feel I will enjoy this career, so I don't mind. I enjoy talking to people and feel very good when I help them with their problems. I like the feeling of being needed. A couple of my interests are the supernatural and dinosaurs. For a while I thought of becoming a parapsychologist. Since I can't base a whole career on this, I will pursue something else that I am greatly interested in. Since I like children I am thinking either of becoming a counselor for children that have personal problems or a counselor at a high school. If my pursuance of the above does not turn out as I would like, then I would like to be an archaeologist. I will need to research this career a little more to decide if it's a possible career choice. But for now, considering my interests, this looks like a good possibility. I know eventually I will decide on one, but right now I am looking at several things. Dwayne Terrell Shafter High School Class of '97 37 My soul is like the ocean current, reflecting from the sky, slowly full of pain like an hour glass; Like the dark black clouds that are blown like the boundless winds; Filled with thoughts of the heart and feelings. Emilia Trujillo Shafter High School Class of '97 My soul is like the hour glass, sand that lays there like the ocean does; The clouds that are above us create the winds that makes the ocean currents glide over the surface of the earth; Just as my soul moves from sand grain to sand grain really not going anywhere. Mayra Trujillo Shafter High School Class of '97 38 My future plans are to graduate from high school and get good grades. Also to do my best in school. After I graduate from high school, I want to go the University of Texas in El Paso, Texas. I hope UTEP can help me prepare to be a good teacher. When school starts again, I want to do the best I can. I want to get good grades so that I can fulfill my University requirement and be able to go to UTEP. I have always wanted to go to the University of Texas at El Paso. Since I was small I have dreamed of going there. I hope the University of Texas at El Paso will help me become a good teacher. I want to become a teacher because I like to help people and make a difference in their lives. I want to influence them to better themselves, not just to stay where they are, but to always do more, if they set their minds to it. In conclusion, I know that with God's help I can accomplish these things which I have set in my heart to do. I know that by committing myself to do these things I can do it. I would also make my family especially my parents, proud of me. I know my future depends on me from now on and it is my responsibility to become somebody which I can be happy with. Silvia Vasquez Highland High School Class of '97 My career plans for the future are to become a successful surgeon. This profession suits me because I enjoy helping people. I have strengths in certain areas that I will bring with me when I become a surgeon. I try to understand the problems people have; I will be very well liked by my patients. I have a cheerful personality, which a doctor must have to gain trust from her patients. I have always dreamed of being a surgeon. Now I want to make this dream a reality. I will have to learn to be more organized in order to overcome the many obstacles I will face in the coming years. If I keep my mind to it, I know I am capable of pursuing this dream and living a full and happy life. I will reach a goal that I truly want in my life, and will feel happy to accomplish something I worked hard for. I plan on attending a four year university, then transferring to a medical school. I am confident that my grades will help me get into a top university here in California. Rosa Ventura McFarland High School Class of '97 39 In the near future, about one year from now, I'm going to graduate from high school. After that, I would like to become a Graphic Art expert. I would like to get the knowledge from a small college or an independent institution. With this career, I would like to create computer animation, comics, and draw. In this field, I can take pictures and change their whole structure by clipping art or simply taking out some of its properties. This is not going to be easy to accomplish. Nevertheless, I plan to take some classes and learn more about the subject. For this reason, I plan to buy a computer this summer. During my next school year, I'm going to take two ROP classes: Graphic Arts and Bausch Electronics. I think these classes will greatly help me. By knowing electronics, I can fix my own computer, update it and even expand its memory. I really don't know if I'm going to college. Antelmo Villarreal Shafter High School Class of '97 Someday I hope to become successful. I want to major in communications so I can work with the public. I feel this will best suit me because I am very outgoing and love to meet people. I can openly talk to strangers and converse with them so that I may understand them. I would like to work with the public because there is something new and different in every person. This would help me accept the differences in every individual human being. I imagine living in a metropolitan area with a good, spiritual, healthy life. This would make me happy, and after accomplishing this goal I could live in peace. I plan to further my education and successfully climb to the top of the communication industry. In order to accomplish this I need to take advantage of all educational experiences. I also have to discipline myself and understand that what I do today will affect my life tomorrow.
