It is detected using XYZ Mapping inspection technology with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) which uses high-resolution fiber optic laser gyroscopes and accelerometers. These three dimensional coordinates of the entire pipeline, together with specialized algorithms are applied and used to calculate the basis for curvature analysis and detection of bending strain. Strain changes can be monitored comparing XYZ data from several mapping inspection runs. IMU technology can be used to detect movement of the pipeline from its original position due to, for example, anchor drag, earthquakes or landslides. Pipeline movement is determined by comparing the change in trajectory of two mapping inspections by comparing the “as built” trajectory with the first XYZ inspection, or two successive mapping inspections performed within a specific number of years.
