The loyalty and devotion of our dogs resembles the human idea of love and affection to such a great extent that like me, you probably view your dog as a family member. Like any other family member, dogs get sick too, and deserve as much of your attention and care, as does any other family member. Dogs are vulnerable to the same illnesses as human beings including diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, heart disease, and arthritis as well as their own dog specific diseases. Some of the common health complaints that you can come across in your pet dog are the presence of parasites like fleas, ticks, and mites and ailments like ear infections, diarrhea, allergies, tooth & gum problems and impacted anal glands. Obviously, the first reaction on seeing abnormal symptoms is to approach a veterinarian which often leads to medications, prescriptions foods and bills. And perhaps you’re even facing the prospect of surgery when a chronic condition has gone unseen for so long. More usually you have to contemplate expensive drugs that you’re not even aware the side effects and toxicity of and vet prescribed specialty foods which most often do not make the difference you’d hoped for. Just more money wasted on temporary measures and your dog still has health problems. So how can you help your family pet to optimum lifelong health, prevent as many as 9 out of 10 of today’s dog health problems and do it naturally, without unnecessary toxic drugs, expensive prescription food, surgery, mounting bills or worry? In short this report helps you to discover how to have a long lived, low maintenance always healthy dog and the peace of mind that comes with it. You can prevent poor health and have your dog live longer by being proactive. This way, you head off potential illness before it happens. This is far better than reacting to chronic disease that’s built up over time because you and your dog are left with multiple problems, high vet costs and worry. Every day I receive questions from concerned dog owners. Their suffering dog has several problems to deal with at once and they just don’t know where to turn when vets, drugs and various diet choices have not improved their dog’s health. In fact, it generally complicates an already out-of-control condition, and their dog’s health is worse than ever. By focusing on the three keys below you avoid that heart stopping moment when your vet tells you the health check results are ‘serious’ when all you want to hear is ‘your dog is in perfect health’. The three keys to unlock ultimate dog health for life are: Key 1- Diet – This means providing a diet that is most closely aligned to your dog’s biology for greatest health, wellbeing and longevity. KEY 2 - Immune System – This is your dog’s internal defense mechanism and it must be maintained in good working order. It acts much like having computer Anti-Virus protection that constantly monitors your computer. Any viral intruders that do get in are quickly discovered and removed. Your dog’s immune system acts in the same way, keeping your dog protected and healthy. Key 3 - Physical and Mental Wellbeing – Your dog’s body and mind must work optimally. This includes their muscle tone and ideal weight, organ condition such as liver, kidneys, pancreas and heart. Their teeth must be kept clean as unseen germs are easily introduced through tartar build-up, which quickly leads to gum disease. A dog in great health from good diet – Key 1 and a strong immune system – Key 2; has mental clarity, is happy and balanced in their moods and behavior. By using the three keys to unlock ultimate dog health for life, your dog will excel in life, be super healthy, live longer and have a balanced stress free state of mind. How comforted would that make you feel? “Always keep in mind the three keys as you move through this report.” But Aren’t Dog Ailments a Normal Part of Dog Ownership? What you may not be aware of, is that there are other options in the way we look after our dogs that can mean very different outcomes to the perceived norm of “dog ailments come with the territory” thinking. The common perception is that dogs are old, getting tired, slowing down and grey muzzled or generally seen as senior citizens by the time they reach 10 years old. At this stage we generally think they have perhaps only 2 to 4 years of life left; any more is a welcome bonus. We fully expect to have to deal with higher levels of chronic disease, infirmity, veterinary involvement, drugs, special diets, costs and some sleepless nights. What if I told you there was a safer, more predictable way of looking at dog ownership. And with it, a life of complete health and less need for veterinary involvement. You have much lower overall costs; your dog is exposed to far less drugs, has less infirmity, less chronic disease and lives on average one third longer than the current national average of 10 to 13 years. And you get to cut your yearly dog bills by up to 85% (As researched by an Australian study on 126 dogs monitored over twelve months). Would that be something you’d like to know about? Imagine, What Dog Companionship Can be Like Imagine for a moment that you knew nothing about dogs, how long they live, what they eat etc, you don’t have one, you simply just want one. Remember: You are imagining this… You are looking forward to your new arrival - that gorgeous little 8 week old puppy you’ve been so excited about or the shelter dog you decided to rescue is finally coming home. You have been told that with good care and diet she will probably reach an age of around 18 to 20 years of age, perhaps more. She will be in great shape with youthful vigor until at least age 15 to 16. You should expect only to need veterinary intervention for puppy shots (one time for life) and health checks every few years. Your new charge does not get ill, has superb health with a glossy coat, sparkling white teeth, clean clear fresh breath, squeaky clean ears, lots of energy, gets no diarrhea, has little gas and sheds only lightly. She has bullet proof health from a strong immune system and does not cost more than regular feeding costs should. She practically never needs a vet, drugs or even washing because she smells like a puppy lifelong. Essentially she’s a long lived, low maintenance always healthy dog for the best part of 20 years. NOW: Do you even think this is possible? Well the answer is YES. And it comes down to the first critical key: Key 1- DIET! And do you know what the best part is? Unlock your dog’s natural biological diet and the other two keys will automatically unlock as if by magic. That’s the power of using the right diet. You see, here’s the exciting part - right under your nose all along is the simple answer to unlocking the huge health potential locked up in your dog. It’s been there all along. You aren’t told it’s there by anybody. Actually that’s because it’s not’s profitable to do so but we’ll get to that later. For now, all you need to know is that the answer to ultimate dog health and having your dog live to their late teens from a pup – easily – be low maintenance and always healthy is down to what they eat. Use the first key to unlock diet and you automatically unlock powerful immune system health and create strong physical and mental wellbeing. This makes dog ownership easier on the pocket, more predictable and safer. Food cannot be neutral. But before I get into why diet plays such an important role in your dogs health, immune system and mental wellbeing, I want to share with you some important background on where your dog’s ancestry comes from, and how they - like all dogs today – became a pet dog because this part is very important. Your dogs ancestral past and the diet her ancestors ate give us many answers to what’s the optimal diet for greatest health, wellbeing and longevity. This helps you to understand your dogs needs better, be better able to help them live healthier, while cutting your costs and giving you greater peace of mind. Short History of Dogs Back along the evolutionary timeline, modern dog’s ancestors showed up between 15 and 40 million years ago (depending on whose timeline you use), while we humans entered the frame around 2 million years ago. This means dogs have been roaming our world a lot longer than us. Dogs have had a very long time to evolve their biological makeup. And what they eat and how it affects their digestive system have had a long time to be perfected by natural selection. This means changes in their dietary habits have altered very slowly over millions of years. Our present day dog breeds ALL evolved from their close relative, the Grey Wolf and with the help of mans creative breeding practices produced many types of domestic dog, from small fluffy lap dogs to giant breeds. Humans saw the benefit of keeping dogs and the 15,000 year old relationship between man and his best friend began in earnest. He saw that perhaps the more eager gregarious wolf got closer and closer to the camp fire, perhaps to steal a bit of leftovers and at some point realized the usefulness of these animals as working dogs. So the original wolves/dogs are carnivorous animals that hunt and eat meat. It is the unquestioned natural staple of their diets, and has been since long before mankind set foot in their territory. By this very definition, what a wild animal eats can be nothing other than its natural diet. Developing through the evolutionary timeline, a carnivore’s body has been designed to derive its required nutrients from the raw food it kills, and sometimes what it finds as the remnants of natural death or the leftover scraps of other predators. These truths are unquestioned, and they have remained unchanged for literally millions of years. So our modern domestic dogs are natural carnivores. This, too, is an unquestioned truth. Therefore – again, by definition – if they eat anything other than what for them is a natural diet, then they are existing in a non-natural state. Our dogs’ bodies have been designed for one thing where nutrition is concerned, but when we feed them something else we are departing from what is natural, and therefore depriving them of their optimal diet. So we can get a picture of our dog’s ancestral diet and the fact that a raw food diet is their optimal diet throughout the ages. But what about in today’s world? What about the modern, fast paced, convenience led world we live in where food isn’t picked from trees or dug from the ground? It’s simply picked right off the supermarket shelf or delivered straight to our door. Let’s have a look at 12 diets commonly given to dogs today. I will rank them from best to worst in terms of their optimal nutritional value for dogs. High moisture content to prevent organ dysfunction, dehydration and renal failure. 70% on average in any given food for balanced nutritional needs. 2. High quality protein content in line with their ancestral and biological needs. 3. Balanced diet that includes naturally occurring vitamins, minerals and other bio available nutrients. Best to Worst Diets to Feed Dogs No.1-Balanced homemade diet of raw food-is as about as good as it gets for your dog. Because it’s their natural species appropriate diet most biologically aligned to their digestive system. Dogs thrive on a well balanced raw food diet. The food is unadulterated, contains a variety of live enzymes, flavonoids, fatty acids, naturally occurring vitamins and minerals and a host of nutrients that are otherwise destroyed by heat and processing in commercial pet foods. You have complete control over the diet, and with the right information you unlock ultimate dog health. No.2-Commercial raw food diet-is second and today it’s becoming widely available in frozen pre-packaged form ready to open and serve, much like its dry and canned commercial dog food equivalent. It’s important to buy a good cross section of these prepared foods to achieve an acceptable nutritional balance. The internet is still the best place to find a good supply of diverse raw foods. Many small boutique pet shops are now offering freezer section choices to cover your needs. All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 11 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott No.3-Homemade diet of cooked food-is third and still the favorite of many dog owners. The fact that the food is cooked does destroy many nutrients thereby diminishing its quality. However, as with the UK’s oldest dog age 22 fed a homemade cooked food diet, there is still viability to its nutrient profile free of commercial dog food additives. No.4-Human grade food in cans-is fourth as the food contained in the can and stated on the label is of human grade. Generally this food is more expensive and on par with commercially available raw food in terms of cost. No.5-Commercial premium canned food-is fifth and widely available through major supermarkets. Although of better quality than the white label or own brand offerings, the practice of “co-labeling” often means the same contents in both expensive and cheaper options are exactly the same, having been canned on the same Chinese production line using different labels. No.6-Veterinary endorsed canned food-is sixth and purchased through your local veterinary practice. Hills Science Diet is the major choice here. Again, the lines can be blurred with the practice of co-labeling but generally it’s thought to be of better quality than what comes next. No.7-Human grade dry food in boxes and packets-is seventh and contains ingredients suitable for humans. However the moisture content is low at around 12% and does not meet basic nutritional adequacy for dogs. Yes it may say it’s “complete and balanced”… but it’s NOT. No.8-Veterinary endorsed dry food-is eight and although your vet’s behind it, they’re selling it for profit, so ethics aside the nutritional quality is average at best and sub optimal for your dog’s health. No.9-Commercial premium dry food-is ninth and contains ingredients of highly questionable origin, low moisture content, as many as 29 different additives and of low nutritional value to dogs and cats. No.10-Deli store no name brand dog food-is tenth and to be avoided at all cost. In all honesty it’s probably not that much worse than the premium brand labeled cans. But one thing you can be sure of, it’s unsuitable as optimal nutrition for your dog. All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 12 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott No.11-Deli store no name brand dry food-is eleventh and because it’s low in moisture, of questionable origin and filled with chemical additives, it’s to be avoided. No.12-Semi moist food in pouches (including moist treats)-is twelfth and this one is dangerous to pets – period - as it’s kept in this semi moist condition with propylene glycol. This preservative is banned in human food and destructive to dog’s health. Where’s the cut-off point for nutritional adequacy in the above list? Having spent 9 years researching the commercial pet food industry and reading most every book out there on the subject of pet nutrition, I can say that below No. 3 you’re going to struggle for reasonably balanced nutrition for your dog. The BIG reason is that there are NO laws to keep commercial pet food manufacturers honest. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AFFCO) sets guide lines to offer some consumer protection from malpractice, but are at best – window dressing and at worst, cause the death of millions of pets annually. This is because they have no power of oversight and are controlled by the dictates of big food and big agriculture wealth. The Practice of Co-Labeling With the practice of running different pet food brands on the same Chinese production lines and simply labeling up the cans with premium and no name brand labels, we cannot be sure of what we are getting. The labels themselves are mostly a work of fiction as again the pet food manufacturers do not have to come clean on exact contents. Instead they use words with multiple connotations (a bit like politicians). So now you can begin to get a picture of modern dog food diets and their questionable quality - simply because they are not controlled by law as human food is – and how this can mean low quality food for your dog. Let’s move on briefly to the actual ingredients in pet food and how labels are created to disguise the true contents. All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 13 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott Have you ever really understood what the ingredients label really means? Example: Here’s a selection of ingredients from one of the world’s top brand dry dog foods – Do you know exactly what these four ingredients are? 1. 2. 3. 4. Poultry by-product meal Corn gluten meal Soybean meal Animal digest Besides many unrecognizable food ingredients in dog food there’s also a tongue twisting laundry list of 29 named synthetic additives dog food manufacturers have to choose from, to produce colors, preservation, smell, taste, digestibility etc. So you can be sure that you will never know what’s in that can or packet. If your dog has health problems, you can be pretty sure it’s because of a ‘modern food waste diet’ fortified with chemicals he or she is consuming. As the world presses forward with uncertain economic conditions, commercial pet food will only become more variable in quality with cheaper, less appropriate and harmful ingredients, underlined by ever increasing pet food recalls. My Recommendation for Your Dogs Diet: I highly recommend you feed your dog a homemade raw food diet or a commercial raw food diet and third, a home cooked food diet. This way you have control over what your dog eats, which means you know what’s in it and feel safe in the knowledge that your dog’s health is optimal. With commercial pet foods, regardless of the marketing messages about content quality, if it has been cooked, preserved and put in a can or packet, it’s not biologically optimal for your dog. You can pay premium prices for clever marketing and fancy labels, but the contents will always be sub-optimal nutrition. Pet food manufacturers have no laws stopping them from seeking the cheapest, low quality waste food, dressing it with chemicals and labeling it in ways that you cannot understand. And with clever adverts, you’re told its 100% complete and balanced - go figure! Now we know where our modern pet dogs originate from, what the optimal diet for them to eat is and how the most common ways of feeding your dog stack up against each other for nutritional adequacy. And in turn, how that helps or hinders your dogs overall health. I now want to turn to why and how the diet choices below number 3 on the list affect your dog’s health, as it’s important to know the consequences attached to your choices in dog food. Every single health problem on the list below has a direct connection to the commercial canned and kibble pet food diet you feed your dog. There are other considerations like environmental pollution, veterinary drugs, environmental stress and vaccination induced auto immune disease. But the overwhelming problem begins with the food your dog consumes each and every day of their life. These can be any of the following: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Cushing’s disease Internal organ diseases such as cancer, affecting the liver, kidney, bowel, pancreas, and lungs Urinary tract infections Diabetes Low immunity (via compromised immune system) Kennel cough (via compromised immune system) Persistent diarrhea or lose foul smelly stools Ear infection/ear mites/yeasty build-up Worm infestations Itchy skin Dandruff Hot spots Eczema skin in ears or around the body Dry cracked or runny nose Jaundice eyes (whites that appear yellow) Crusty ear tips Cracked foot pads Excess shedding Acne, bumps or cysts on skin Anal gland blockage (scooting) All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 15 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott • • • • • • • • • • • • • Lacking energy Halitosis (foul dog breath) Tartar and Gum disease Cloudy eye Persistent allergies Paw licking Brittle or greasy coat Mange Obesity Foul gas Arthritis Problem behaviors Potential link to seizures Diet plays the central role in your dog’s life, yet for most of us, we are not even aware of just how important it really is. Why? Because no one told us the facts as they really stand from an independent objective driven perspective. What we were told by adverts, experts or government regulation is only a small part of the story. Remember, unlike the food we people eat, there’s very little government regulation of pet food quality. The USDA doesn’t control it, nor does the FDA or AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials). Not one of these agencies watches over and continually checks what private pet food manufacturers put in their products. Because: Pet food is made from “rejected” human food waste which cannot be certified healthy by any law otherwise the massive profit it produces would vanish. It’s owned by the human food industry. They simply take all the waste from food factories, restaurant chains, supermarket chains, to feedlot operations, ranches, zoos… even small animal hospitals and road kill. In fact anything non animal too, from the mountains of pulp left over from sugar beet extraction or shells from peanut production, even the feathers from chicken factories – by the millions of tons – are used as ingredients (remember No.1 above, Poultry by-product meal). As you can imagine this HUGE shadow industry is FREE to clean up our world of its waste and instead of it being destroyed by law is allowed through via “look the other way guidelines” to be turned into premium pet food for vast profit. Welcome to the world of pet food as it really is - not the warm, fuzzy, feel good advertising you see on TV. This report explains the simple truth, gives you an answer as simple as going back to a natural diet regime or reducing the synthetic additives that you may have been giving to your dog in their present diet. 17 Stop for one moment and ask yourself this question: What did dogs eat before cans and kibble came along? All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott The vast majority of canned and kibble dog food is filled with Carbohydrates; • • • • • • • • • • • • Cereals Corn meal Corn Corn gluten meal Brewers rice Soybean meal Sorghum Barley Beet pulp Brewers yeast Potatoes Oatmeal Dogs have no dietary requirement or need for carbohydrates. Their liver derives energy directly from the protein in raw meat and bones. Carbohydrates are included in the ingredients of processed pet food because they are a less expensive source of energy than fat or protein. The carbohydrate ingredients list above is from a range of canned and dry dog food products at the higher end of the dog food market. It's important for a dog not to eat carbohydrates in any quantity as they quickly turn to sugars which create imbalance in your dogs system that can feed bad bacteria and kill off beneficial bacteria. The sludge from packet food forms hard mucus like rubbery film that smothers the lining of your dog’s digestive tract. This creates multiple problems: 1. Impairs the dog’s immune system which means it cannot do its job of defending the body from bacterial and fungal infections. 2. Limits nutrient absorption into the body so the system extracts far less of what it needs from the food. 3. Creates an unbalanced micro flora environment in the gut which causes upset, swelling, diarrhea, gas, dehydration, worm infestation and chronic disease like inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer plus repeated bacterial skin allergies. None of the ingredients provide optimal or balanced nutrition for your dog, despite label claims. A frequently asked question at HealthyDogForLife.com is: azure // Feb 16, 2015 at 7:20 pm “My dog gets gas and diarrhea once every week or so he is only six months old and I worry about him. He is now eating royal canin’s gastrointestinal but he gets diarrhea with that too. Do you think that a raw diet would eliminate this? I am desperate as my vet wants to give him prednisone or get a biopsy.” This combination of cheap industrial food waste and chemical additives has played its role in your dog's weakened immune system, including 9 out of 10 health problems as a direct result of diet. 19 Why Commercial Dog Food Diets Cause Disease The very food we give our pets is what determines how old they live and the quality of the life they enjoy. Feed your dog their natural biological diet and your dog generally lives to around 16 to 19 years of age according to my 8 years of research statistics with a much shorter infirmity period at the end. Feed your dog a commercially produced cooked diet from a can or packet and their average age of life expectancy is only 10 to 13 years according to official national research statistics. And this is combined with an often long painful and costly infirmity period through the senior years. When diet is sub-optimal both enzyme health, hormone health and immune system health are impaired. An added dilemma with commercial artificial diets is the lack of anti cancer compounds such as naturally occurring antioxidant vitamins. A huge majority of commercial foods contain toxins that destroy the immune system and gradually kill your dog as you feed him. Dogs are basically meat eaters. Manufacturers, however, use synthetic additives and preservatives to increase shelf life, which can be detrimental to the health of your dog. As stated by Dr. Tom Lonsdale BVet Med, MRCVS “Junk food is laden with colorants, preservatives, humectants and a raft of other strange chemical additives-none of with any nutritive value and all toxic to varying degrees…” It is not only the type of food but also the quantity that makes a difference. The age, weight and breed of your dog are key aspects that determine the amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats that the dog requires every day. The level of activity is another factor for arriving at the calorie intake. As much as possible, feed your dog a raw food based diet, one that is natural and free from toxins. The purpose of a natural diet is to boost the immune system and help the liver to regenerate its cells so that it can function to its fullest capacity. A toxin free diet is the key to longevity and a health. Because the physiology of a dog was never designed to recognize manmade chemicals, these non nutrients are considered invaders by their immune system. When a dog is eating a daily diet of commercial dog food, its system easily becomes overloaded with invaders. Eventually, its immune system becomes unable to fight off even the most simple of illnesses. What a dog’s system does recognize is the live enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and the full range of over 35 proteins and other nutrients that come in a diet of fresh raw food. With no manmade chemicals to batter the immune system, every nutrient in this diet can be used efficiently and effectively. In essence, not only does a diet of raw meat All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 20 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott and bone work as food, it works as medicine too (an important point not well understood by dog owners or vets). A boosted and strong immune system in any dog from a healthy diet prevents disease. This also protects a dog owner’s pocketbook from costly vet visits, expensive test procedures and medications. Just as people who eat a bad diet easily get run down, have low energy and pick up colds and flu regularly, so dogs existing on a compromised commercial dog food diet, also easily become over burdened from bad diet and toxins that cause bacterial and viral infections-a sign of a weak immune system. It is interesting to observe that the people who know, the professionals who care for wolves in captivity in our zoos, don’t feed these animals anything other than raw meat still on the bone… 21 Why Does Cooking Dog Food Make it Harmful? One of the most unnatural aspects of the way we feed our dogs today is that we cook the meat they consume. This is true of canned and bagged products, in addition to other processes, not the least of which is the use of preservatives. The result of all this cooking is a gradual breakdown of a dog’s natural immune system, which is vital to their longevity and quality of life. Why is cooking harmful? Because the heating process in cooked food alters the molecular structure of the food. The proteins in raw meat are large, delicate structures that are easily broken down by heating, greatly reducing their effectiveness as nutrients. The altered structures of these molecules, as created by the heating process, are unnatural and difficult to digest. This unnatural and unrecognized molecular structure is what causes food allergies in our dogs; they literally cannot digest it properly. All simply because the meat being eaten has been cooked, rather than served in what the digestive tract has been trained for forty million years to expect, which is a natural state of rawness. The fact is, cooked food takes longer to digest than raw food, and requires a lot more of the dog’s energy. Dogs have a limited natural enzyme supply within the body, a supply which is critical to the digestion process. That process relies on the consumption of the natural enzymes that are present in raw food to balance biochemical activity in the body. The pancreas that produces these enzymes becomes overburdened in coping with cooked food that has none to offer, leading to biological stress and pressure on the immune system. Add to this the long list of artificial additives in non-natural food, and the combined effects of the heating process, and over time you have long-term degeneration of DNA, the breakdown of the immune system and eventual disease. Each and every day your dog eats artificial kibble or highly processed canned food brings her one step close to an undeniable disaster. Now You Know – Will You Still Change Your Dogs Diet? The alternative is well within your grasp as a dog owner. Preparing your own homeprepared food for your dog is simple, no more complex than preparing food for the kids simpler, in fact, because no cooking is required. Just defrost the meal and serve. Why, then, is this not the common practice for dog owners everywhere? We love our dogs, after all, and if it’s truly that simple it seems logical to assume that most dog owners would happily make the shift from canned and bagged food to a more natural diet. All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 22 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott The answer is ignorance – we, as a culture of dog owners, are simply unaware of the dark side of serving our pets processed dog food. The consequences of doing so are not always extreme or visible, because your dog can’t tell you how she feels. So we develop habits, we yield to convenience and precedence, and thus perpetuate a downward spiral that contributes to the early death of our dogs and a less than optimal life experience for them in the meantime. Why Is Nature’s Dog Food Still the Best Choice? Nature has a way of providing its creatures with what they need. With animals that are not living in a world of veterinarians and vitamins and disinfectants, protection comes in the form of natural food. A natural diet is the foundation of a strong immune system, which becomes a natural barrier to disease. Dogs haven’t survived in the wild for millions of years by luck or by accident, and they’ve done it without a bag of dog food in sight. It makes sense, then, by returning to a natural diet we are providing our dogs with nature’s blueprint for their immune system and the fulfillment of their genetic potential. The science of human nutrition is all about the immune system, and your dog’s need for a strong immune system is no less critical to their health and survival. The cellular chemistry is really very similar – a natural mechanism allows the body to respond to the presence of toxins, bacteria and infection. When we interfere with that immune system, which is precisely what messing around with a natural diet does, we compromise it. In humans, a diet rich in so-called junk foods is the enemy of a strong immune system, since it creates an imbalance of sugars and introduces preservatives into the system. In commercial dog food, manufacturers claim to enrich their products with antioxidants, the implication of which it helps the animal fight off disease, especially problems with gums and digestion. And yet, these two specific areas are the cause of perhaps millions of domestic canine deaths. This is heartbreaking, because something as simple and easy as putting the dog back onto a natural diet, which has millions of years of successful testing behind it, might be All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 23 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott all that it takes to reverse these problems. What is it About Raw Food That Makes all the Difference? The Pros and Cons of Feeding Your Dog Fresh Food: The Pros: • *Average life expectancy if fed from puppy is 16 to 19 (*My personal research over 9 years). Life expectancy for a commercially fed dog is 10 to 13 years according to combined US, UK, Canada and European research statistics). • The healing of 9 out of ten health complaints (Amazing what can be fixed up so quickly through feeding raw food – it’s natures medicine too). • Your dog is now getting the macro and micro nutrients it needs. This is down to the cellular level biology your dog was designed to grow and function from consuming a natural diet. • You are protecting yourself from greedy business which has no laws in the US, to protect you from them, stuffing crude derivative based pieces-and-parts waste into cans and packets. • Your dog is merely an object of commerce and trade by law which means it has no value beyond its price tag. • Chemicals are added to dog foods that are banned in human food because they are carcinogenic - cancer forming - hence the fact that 1 in 2 dogs will get some kind of cancer by age 10. • The diet is pretty simple in theory and practice once you try it - I made sure my book and step by step video program “Real Food for Dogs” was A, B, C simple, but balanced, and easy to fit in with modern convenience lifestyles. Raw diets can be prepared very simply and be very effective at keeping your dog ultra healthy. • Costs: We mistakenly think it’s extra expensive to feed a raw diet like this. We think of T-bone steaks, supermarket lamb chops in shrink wrapped styro-foam trays or other expensive cuts. And when you have a Golden retriever to feed, this sounds expensive. Yes, if you feed that way, it can All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 24 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott be expensive but the supermarket is not the only place to purchase food for your dog. • A 30lb (13.61kg) bag of Eukanuba premium dog kibbles costs $47.00 in the US, around £37.00 in the UK and usually lasts a month for a medium size dog of 50lb (23kg). As an example it costs me around £30 ($45) per month to feed my 47lb (21kg) dog high quality balanced raw food choices. This is less cost than a large sack of premium kibble and for optimum nutrition too, which means greater health, reduced veterinary intervention, drugs and associated costs. • On average over the lifetime of a dog, an owner spends in the region of $750 in the US, and £700 in the UK each year on veterinary costs. This includes checkups, diagnosis, treatment, drugs, prescription dog food, vaccinations etc, with the bulk of those costs occurring in your dog’s senior years. • According to an Australian study conducted on 126 dogs over the span of 12 months fed a raw food diet, costs were slashed by up to 85%. Veterinary visits were considerably reduced with the big up-tick in health among the test subjects. My personal research conducted on my own - lab rat - Rocco (actually he’s a 9 year old English Staffordshire Bull Terrier) revealed a 95% saving on those prices with just a single veterinary visit in 7 years. So you’d be looking at a minimum saving of over $10,000 (£6,650) on the average life expectancy of your dog fed a raw food diet not to be sniffed at. • A natural diet for dogs is just that-natural, no chemicals, no cooking, just raw on the bone meat full of all the natural stuff that’s supposed to be in it. Meanwhile those creative guys at the dog food plant have to get their buddies in the marketing agency to manipulate Jo public with “evidence” from their other buddies in the chemistry lab who conduct “controlled experiments” to draw up conclusions that the data can’t really support. Heck - this data is even legally sustainable if you have the money, even though it amounts to pure “BS”. • Raw food for dogs comes mostly from human food outlets which means its human grade and therefore comes under strict human food laws, so it’s in good shape, good quality, clean etc. Canned and packet food for pets has no such laws governing it. Yes we have the AFFCO organization guidelines on pet food quality, but can you imagine the pet food giants saying-thanks guys, but we’ll decide what we can get All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 25 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott away with. This means you have to place your trust in companies that make pet food and the accuracy of their labels. • Feeding a raw food diet to dogs, bullet proofs their immune system - the immune system is the body’s defender to invading bacterial and viral parasites - among other clean up duties. In fact so much so, tests with my dog eating one week old stinking putrefying meat had no dire effects. This is because the meat is unprocessed and decaying naturally with natural bacteria, normal for a dog (ever wonder why they dig up old bones?). It’s the decomposing of processed food which gives rise to anaerobic conditions that causes the real danger for both us and our dogs, simply because of all the artificial chemicals added to the food. • There’s no grain in a raw dog food diet which is a good thing as dogs have no real biological need for it. Dogs derive their energy requirements from the processing of proteins found in raw meat. Sure, they can eat the cheap filler in commercial dog food, but the high levels seen in most commercial dog food throws a dog’s chemical balance out. This leaves their pancreas to compensate the lack of naturally occurring enzymes in fresh food, which is a big reason so many dogs get diabetes. • Raw food contains 70% moisture while kibble rarely has more than 12%. Kibble takes up only 1/3 of the volume of an equivalent amount of natural dog food and it’s well documented that a dog’s stomach and intestines need mechanical stimulation for healthy digestion. This is why you get large waste deposits from dogs on kibble, as most of it is shunted through your dogs body quickly, in part digested or even un-digested form. • A balanced raw food diet contains the essential naturally occurring minerals a dog needs for optimum health. Minerals –and vitamins- added to commercial dog food, are cheaper lab produced and made from inorganic synthesized chemicals. They are not easily digested and mostly expelled by your dog’s body. • You know what’s in a piece of raw meat, its muscle meat, some fat and possible bone. Contrast that with what’s in a can or packet. It’s difficult to even understand the label; it’s so full of general terms that tread carefully along the legally provable line. But what they really mean is it’s a toxic jungle of 21st century food waste, preserved with PHD level chemicals we can’t even pronounce. All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 26 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott • When raw dog food is stored, it’s usually frozen which preserves its quality. Canned food, when stored over long periods of time, has been shown to take up metal and metal oxides from the can, in proportions that are not healthy to eat in large quantities. • Stools from a raw fed dog being natural are easy to compost and will not destroy your garden… or your lawn. Kibble contains so many toxic chemicals that very few plants can tolerate it. And it’s the same for urine, as naturally fed dogs tend not to leave dead grass spots. • Stools from a dog fed raw food are small and hard pellet like objects containing mainly waste bone meal. After a day or two in the sun they go white in color. It is then easy to remove them to the flower bed where they act as fertilizer. • These same waste pellets are what express your dog’s anal glands in a natural, predictable way without any blockage, smell and discomfort which leads to costly vet or grooming intervention. • A raw food diet means no obnoxious gas. I bet you can’t imagine what it’s like to have your dog not drop those vile bombs in your living room? Smell is no longer a problem. • Dogs fed a natural diet, develop a strong immune system that will cause your vet bills to go down, maybe even dramatically. It has been my personal experience that about 90% of allergies and skin problems simply disappear within 4 weeks of switching to a natural diet. • Dogs fed on a natural diet become energetic and show with their increased vitality that they feel good. Most dogs even obtain their ideal weight completely naturally, without any “dieting”. These results are visible within 2 to 8 weeks of switching. • Dogs fed on a natural diet get the shiniest and softest coats you can obtain. They also develop strong pigmentation. These are only two of the outer symptoms that the internal glands - pancreas, thyroid, adrenal glands etc - are working well and keeping the metabolism in good balance. • Dogs fed a natural diet can enjoy feeling full after every meal – simply because you can allow them to fill their stomachs with quality nutrition. With small lap dogs you could buy from Macy’s deli counter in New York and still feed cheaper though! So consider the vast network of online suppliers and local butchers or deli meat counters for better deals. • Bones can possibly get stuck in your dog’s throat, stomach or intestines, causing injury. How true is this? 99.99% of the time, the problem is from cooked bones, which are hardened and become brittle in the cooking process. This includes discarded dry and hardened cooked chicken bones that dogs, rummaging in the trash, fetch out to eat. So even though the real problem is cooked bones, you could still say there is a very small chance of raw dog bones being a problem. However, this can be eliminated altogether by using a home grinder or buying ready ground in bone packaged raw dog food. My book and step by step video program, Real Food for Dogs gives you more alternatives too, so you get all the benefits and no bones to worry about. • Meat is supposed to be covered in bad bacteria like Salmonella, Campylobacter and Staph which can upset a dog or make it very ill. Everything we touch is covered in bacteria, including human food. We cook our food which kills the bacteria. A dog’s defense to bacteria is its powerful stomach acids. The dog’s stomach acid is far more powerful than ours for this very reason, and it kills 99.99% of incoming bugs and bacteria. That’s why dogs can lick, smell and generally do disgusting things while out on a walk or run in the park with no upset. If by an extremely remote chance they do get salmonella poisoning at one point in their lives, it isn’t life threatening for them and once they’ve had it once, they develop a strong immunity towards re-infection. • A raw food diet takes long to prepare, doesn’t it? • I’ve seen some of those You Tube videos and dog diet books go into great depth with all the ingredients needed plus the preparation work. Long lists of ingredients, lots of unnecessary supplements - most of which lead to imbalance, pots & pans and mess in your kitchen daily and the washing All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 28 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott up - no thanks. As we know with people, a diet of predominately plant based foods, rich in variety of vegetables, fruits, legumes and minimally processed starchy and sugary foods helps to prevent diseases such as diabetes, cancer and various allergy conditions of the skin. Dog’s also need their anti diabetes, cancer and bacterial infection diet based around their natural biological need for meat, bone, offal (internal organs) and a small amount of vegetable matter. A healthy and often strict diet is an essential part of boosting your dog’s immune system and preventing any possible disease in your dog’s system, and in nearly all cases, a change in diet is the only necessary treatment to control and prevent diseases such as diabetes, cancer and liver disease. Through personal research and contact with thousands of dog owners, the central theme of "diet" plays the most vital role in preventing disease in dogs. In fact disease is almost unheard of in raw fed dogs. A raw food based diet for dogs is highly successful in boosting a dog’s immune system to prevent inflammation. Almost all dog owners having switched their dog to a raw food diet note that their dog’s health is vastly improved. Comments from my ‘Real Food for Dogs’ Customers: I immediately switched him onto the new diet, which turned out to be a cinch to do. Your car runs on a certain quality of gasoline. Depending on where you live, you have 87 (Regular), 89 (Mid-grade), and 93 (Premium) in the US are common. Or in the UK You have 2 choices of gas, the premium one at 97 ron and the regular gas at 95 ron and that's it. If you try to put any other form of inferior gas in your tank, your car will malfunction and have to be taken to the auto mechanics for repair which can be costly as the damage done to sensitive equipment in the engine may need to be completely replaced. So we understand cars have sensitive engines that need only the high quality fuel provided at the gas station. Put it another way; if you drove past a gas station with a sign out front saying "half price gas" and you drove in delighted at such a good deal only to see another sign saying "may cause problems to your car" would you still fill-er-up? What About Dogs, What Do They Have to Do With Cars? Your dog runs on similar principals. They have highly evolved digestive systems "engines" that run on high quality food "fuel" and when the quality of fuel fed to them is of inferior quality, after time they begin to malfunction. In this case your dog is a living creature that can, up to a point, adapt its engine to cope with inferior fuel and still run pretty well for a number of years. However, because the fuel does not have all the ingredients necessary to sustain optimal performance from your dog in the long term, eventually malfunctions begin to appear. And any of the ailments in the list above now come into play, having slowly in most cases built up over time, also known as "chronic disease". It's a simple equation but not well understood for one simple reason. Cars run on gasoline because that's the dominant fuel industry and other fuel inventions are held back even though they exist and can mean cheaper fuel. Commercial dog food in the form of kibble and canned dog food is the dominant food industry for dogs even though other foods exist that can mean cheaper and healthier food. What You Can Do About Your Dog’s Diet - Your Choices? 1. If your dog has health issues, then look to changing their food to a raw based diet to help boost their immune system, create mental health and wellbeing and allow your dog to naturally heal itself. This diet brings peace of mind, greatly reduces risk of disease and a predictable outcome because you are in control. 2. In order to bullet proof your dog’s immune system for great health, to prevent future health problems and cost, change your dog's diet to natural nutrition. A balanced raw food diet is the by far the best option as it can significantly help your dog to boost its immune system. This ends future infection problems because now your dog’s immune system is getting the vital nutrients it needs to stay strong while doing its job of protecting your dog from the inside. Important Points to Consider: Your vet is highly trained in diagnosis and treatment and should serve you well in that respect. However, vets are not nutritionists and have little understanding of the role nutrition plays in the health of your dog. Their first course of action in most dog ailments is to prescribe drugs and or vet endorsed "specialty" prescription dog food. This introduces conflict of interest as vets are fully set up to sell drugs and pet food for a share of the profit from their practice. On the other hand, human doctors are under strict laws to refer you to a chemist for medications and also to refer you to a clinical nutritionist for diet treatment. I personally feel that this conflict of interest is too great to ignore, and as such fully recommend you become proactive in providing quality nutrition for your dog, just as you are for your kids. Becoming the expert at nutrition and feeding your dog a healthy raw food based diet is simple to learn and simple to get started with many health benefits. Remember how scientists, doctors, and nutritionists are always telling us to stay away from processed foods because they are unhealthy for us? We as adults are responsible for our kid's diet and do our All rights to this material are reserved by Dan Scott – Healthy Dog for Life.com Any copying and reproduction of this material without prior written consent is strictly prohibited. 35 3 Keys to Unlock Ultimate Dog Health by Dan Scott best to feed them a wholesome diet for good health. The same goes for your dog; he or she is a part of the family and needs the same attention to diet for good health. Your family doctor supports this and you are in control. Meanwhile your dogs vet is not usually supportive of raw food diets because they either do not understand nutrition (although they may state otherwise) or have a vested interest in selling you prescription dog food and drugs. Either way, the quality of canned and kibble dog food regardless of stated quality, follows the commercial processing practice of cheap inferior quality contents. It’s cooked at high temperatures to kill bacteria, which also kills the nutritional element your dog needs, and is then loaded with often dangerous synthetic additives (some completely banned in human food as carcinogens which are cancer forming). It would seem that there is one rule for our kids i.e. parents are responsible and another for our dogs which is that we cannot have responsibility for their nutritional welfare. That must be in the hands of pet food giants and vets who get paid to sell dog food at their clinic! And because this situation is not well understood, we continue to be governed by the dictates of corporate dog food manufacturers who place little value on your dog's health beyond their profit return while alive. The Bottom Line Now may not be the time to express personal opinions on the merits or lack of in any mainstream pet food and to put personal reservations aside. Your personal comfort level is not necessarily your dogs comfort level, so it’s important you sit quietly and think about what’s important for your dogs comfort levels. And if that means feeding them a raw food diet for the best benefit to your dog, then it’s important you try to review your own personal views or those of your vet who is not a canine nutritionist and think of what is clearly best for your dogs health and well being. This isn’t an issue of taste or comfort or reward, it’s an issue of health, strength, well-being, immunity and longevity. Compromise the natural order of your dog’s diet by feeding them canned or bagged dog food manufactured in a plant with the assistance of additives, chemicals and supplements, and you are disturbing the natural order of things. Your dog’s health will suffer for it. Period. If your dog has health problems or you want to be proactive in preventing them, switch over to a raw food diet plan to help boost your dog’s immune system. And diseases like diabetes and IBS never even existed; these are modern diseases brought about by modern unregulated pet food manufacturing. For the most part I’m sad to have to tell you some of the truths about our dog food system. Every day I get messages from dog owners who have discovered their best friend has an infection or cancerous condition because of a compromised immune system or pulling their hair out trying to control repeated skin allergies that drugs and prescription dog food cannot mask for long. Canine diseases have become so commonplace now, that I had to write this report, so I can offer more comprehensive helpful information and advice to dog owners.
