This distinguished honor is given to a
community member, a volunteer, a parent
or district/building faculty and staff who
makes a difference in the lives of students at each building and/or the school
district as a whole.
Looking
for a GEM
at Robert
Frost!
Please do not schedule
vacations or appointments during these days.
All tests will begin first thing in the morning. Students will need to be on time to
complete testing each testing day. Parents are asked to avoid student absences, tardies and doctor appointments during test dates. Students need to be prepared for
testing with proper rest, breakfast, and two sharpened #2 lead pencils. If you have
questions about the tests, you can contact your child’s teacher or to www.ode.gov.
Sample tests are available to help parents with the Ohio Achievement Assessment
(OAA) on the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) website.
CLIP AND SAVE
State OAA’s will be given April 23rd—27th
Making children familiar with the terms
that they may see on the test is an important part of our test preparation. Simple vocabulary may be the stumbling
block that may keep some children from
doing well on the test. Our teachers are
working, across the grade levels, to help
children learn how different words are
used. Below is a listing of some of the
words or phrases that they will probably
see on the test. As you talk with your
child, you may want to use these words
to help him/her to understand them
“outside of the school setting.”

“I-Messages”
It is important to model HONESTY to
children by being honest with yourself
and others. Your honest actions will
speak much louder than your words.
One way to be honest with children and
to help them to be honest with others is
to help them learn how to express their
feelings appropriately. An example of a
positive way to express feelings is by
using a “feelings talk” or an “I statement” Teachers and counselors use this
technique often with children to assist
them in resolving their conflicts peacefully and honestly. For example, a student who is being teased by another
student may have tried ignoring the
teaser to no avail. The student can try
using the “feelings talk” by saying, “I
feel upset when you tease me. I would
like for you to stop please.” By using
an “I statement” the person can become
empowered and feel some sense of control over the situation. Even if the
teaser continues, the person has let
them and others know what they want
to happen.
When your child refuses to do a
chore a parents might try the following
approach. Using a calm voice say to the
child, “I feel disappointed when you do
not do the chore that we agreed upon. I
would like for you to do the chore.” As
the parent, you should have a set of
consequences for home rules that are
broken just as in school. A consequence may be that you, the parent, do
not do something that the child wanted
to do until their task is completed. The
“feelings talk”, may not always work
in every situation but it is a useful tool
to have in your pocket! Give it a try!
I feel ___________ when __________.
I would like ___________.
Family Meeting Activities:
(Remember the snacks!)
Make a sign displaying the “feelings
talk” example shown above. Hang it in
a prominent place such as the refrigerator (if
you can find room!). Practice using
“feelings talk” by role-playing different
situations among family members and
other people.
From School Health Services:
IS IT THE FLU?
The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by
different viruses. The flu and common cold
have very similar symptoms, so it can be
difficult to tell the difference between
them based on symptoms alone. In general,
the flu is worse than the common cold. If
you have the flu, you may experience
some or all of the following symptoms:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Fever*
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy
nose
Body aches
Headache
Chills
Fatigue
Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting

*It is important to note that not everyone
with flu will have a fever.
If you experience flu-like symptoms, you
should stay home and avoid contact with
other people except to get medical care.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you stay
home for at least 24 hours after your fever
is gone except to get medical care. Your
fever should be gone without the use of a
fever-reducing medicine. You should stay
home from work, school, travel, shopping,
social events, and public gatherings. You
should contact your health care provider if:
• You have flu-like symptoms and age 5
or younger, especially younger than 2
• You have flu-like symptoms and 65 or
older
• You have flu-like symptoms and pregnant
• Anyone with flu-like symptoms and any
of the following:
• Cancer
• Blood disorders such as sickle cell
disease
• Chronic lung diseases such as asthma
• Diabetes
• Heart disease
• Kidney disorders
• Liver disorders
• Neurological disorders
• Neuromuscular disorders
• Weakened immune system
• High fever (over 101 by mouth) that
lasts more than 12 hours
• Signs of dehydration (dry lips, not
drinking)
• Trouble breathing
• Little or no appetite
• Any other symptoms that do not go
away or get worse
*For other information from Health Services (including
nurses’ schedules, area clinics, medication forms, and
more), go to the district web site at www.wcsoh.org,
select District Departments, then Health Services.
