ADAPTATIONS – FIT FOR LIFE
Pre-Visit Activities
Windows on Wildlife
Baby bald eagle’s heads are dark colored rather than white like
their parents. This is an adaptation, known as camouflage, which
protects them from being seen in their nest when they are at their
most vulnerable and unable to defend themselves. The following
activity takes a closer look at adaptation and camouflage. Have fun
and we look forward to seeing you.
Definitions
Adaptation (a-dap-tā-shən)
Definition: a change in a species that makes it more fit for
survival in a particular environment
Camouflage (ka-mə-fläzh, -fläj)

Things to think about:
Look at the pictures of the Boreal Owl (picture 4) and the
Snowshoe Hare (picture 5). Can you describe the camouflage
technique they are using and how it helps them to survive?
Video – Now You See Me, Now You Don’t
Now, click on the link below to see a video of a Long-eared Owl.
Its camouflage is so good you might have a hard time seeing it. If
so, you can replay the video as many times as you want.
