National Gallery of Art

OLLI Outings
Saturday, June 3, 2017
(T11) National Gallery of Art
Cost: $48
(Includes round trip passage–lunch is on your own!)
This OLLI Outing is prompted by the East Building’s spectacular facelift. However, you are welcome to
spend the day with the old masters in the West Building or take a stroll on the Mall. There is no entry fee
for the National Gallery and lunch is on your own–there are restaurants to suit every taste.
The National Gallery of Art, including its attached
Sculpture Garden, is a monumental presence on the
National Mall. The museum was privately established in
1937 for the American people by a joint resolution of the
United States Congress. Andrew Mellon donated a
substantial art collection and funds for construction. The
Gallery’s collection of paintings, drawings, prints,
photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces
the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to
the present, including the only painting by Leonardo da
Vinci in the Americas and the largest mobile created by
Alexander Calder.
The East and West Buildings of the National Gallery of Art
are recognized as great works of architecture and are considered national treasures. The I.M. Pei-designed East
Building opened in 1978, but was just reopened on September 30, 2016 after being closed for three years for the
renovation of existing galleries, construction of new galleries and a roof terrace. More than 12,250 square feet
of public space were added and the configuration for the permanent collection of modern art is completely new.
We invite you to wear comfortable shoes and have a great day!
