This month promises to be an exciting one with many classes participating in a variety of exciting excursions and school events. Please see the attached June calendar for all the details. In particular, I wish to highlight our Volunteer Appreciation Tea event on June 3rd for all the volunteers who have supported us throughout the year and the Grade 6 Farewell Ceremony for the Grade 6 students and their families on June 28th at !0:00 am. See you all there. We have already done some planning for a number of exciting opportunities for our students beginning early in the next school year. I’m excited to announce that our school will once again be participating in the TDSB Model Schools for Inner Cities program. This partnership will give our students even more opportunities to enrich their academic, physical and cultural learning. Stay tuned for further details in the new school year. In addition, we will be making an investment in computer technologies to support the TDSB’s push on STEM learning (Science, Technology, Math, Engineering). Students have this to look forward to, in addition to the many exciting excursions, events and programs. At this point, I would like to recognize some of our staff who will be moving on from our school at the end of June. We wish to thank them for their dedication (some several years!) and commitment to our students and learning community. Thank you and best wishes to Ms. Chong, Mr. Owens, Ms. Filbi-Haywood, Ms. Jeyaratnam and Ms. Raj. A special thank you goes out to Mme. Kennedy who is retiring this year from the TDSB after 33 years as a teacher. Congratulations Mme. Kennedy! Sadly, at the end of June we bid farewell to our Grade 6 students, reminding them to always strive to do their best in everything they do. To the families that are moving to new schools, remember us fondly and we wish you well in all your pursuits. To all the students of Hunter’s Glen, we remind you to read every day for at least 30 minutes, ask questions about topics you are interested in, play outdoors as much as you can, be active and make good choices. I wish all the students and their families a safe and enjoyable summer break. See you in September! A Petrucci, Principal Good-bye and Thank You! It is with mixed emotions that I am saying that I am leaving Hunter’s Glen. The past 3 years have been such a great experience, I have truly enjoyed working with each and every student, parent and community member. Thank you for the support you have shown the school and myself, continue to assist your children to set high expectations and strive for success. C McClure, Vice Principal My Trip to Variety Village June 29 Last Day Of School!!! . On Tuesday my class went to Variety Village for the Barrier-free Track and Feld. Twice, to learn how to do it. And a third time, to figure out whether you like it or not." - Virgil Garnett Thomson On Friday May 20th, I went to the zoo with my class. In the morning, Mrs. Nnawuchi took attendance and told us about our groups. There were 6 volunteers, 5 parents and Uzo (Mrs. Nnawuchi’s daughter). It was a self-guided tour, so as soon as we reached the zoo, every group can explore on their own. Our group leader was my mom, so first we decided to see the baby pandas, Canadian Hope and Joy. There was a really long line. While we were waiting, we got the chance to learn the difference between panda skulls and black bear skulls. After pandas, we went to see gazelles, orangutans teasing each other and it was really funny watching them. Then we saw the snakes and tigers. The tiger was sleeping really close to the glass, it was scary. After lunch we went to the rainforest. While heading towards African Safari, we stopped by an information center. I felt snake skin and cheetah fur. I also felt giraffe skin and cheetah fur and held a gazelle horn. Later we saw lion cubs, cheetahs and giraffes. Soon it was time to go back to the school bus. We enjoyed talking about the zoo on our way back to school. June 2016 EXTENDED FRENCH GRADE 6 BUS Those students who will enter our Grade 6 Extended French program in September are reminded that as per TDSB protocol, Grade 6 students DO NOT receive TDSB transportation to and from school as they have during Grade 4 and 5. This means you are responsible for providing your Grade 6 child’s transportation to and from school each day. However, on September 30th you may apply for an “empty seat” should there be seats available. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office. Ultimate Frisbee This year, Hunter’s Glen had 2 Ultimate Frisbee teams-a Grade 5 and a Grade 6. They enjoyed learning this exciting sport, developing many skills. Thanks go out to Mme Kennedy & Mr. Dewar for volunteering their time so the students could have this wonderful experience. REMINDER – School Student Drop-Off! In an effort to ensure the safety of all our students we are reminding the parent community who use our parking lot to drop off their children to please ensure your child is dropped off safely onto the sidewalk. Please do not stop in the middle of our parking lot to drop children off. Not only is this extremely unsafe, it also hinders the flow of traffic through the parking lot in the morning and afternoon. CLASSES 2016-2017 This month, we will be finalizing classes for the 2016 - 2017 school year. As you can appreciate, a tremendous amount of planning factors in the design and organization of these classes. If you have any questions or comments on this matter, please direct them to the office before June 10th. Thank you! As well, please remember that Charles Gordon’s parking is ONLY for their staff, parents and students. Students attending Hunter’s Glen should be entering our school from our own front entrance. As always, students are encouraged to walk or bike to school. Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this safety request. SAFE ARRIVALS It is imperative that parents call the school to inform us if their child is going to be late or absent from class. You may leave a message on the answering machine if calling before 8:00 am or after 4:00 pm. Please leave your child’s name with spelling, grade and the reason for the absence. If a student is not in school and the office has not received notification from the parents, the automated system will call the phone numbers on file – home/cell, workplace numbers, then emergency contacts. Thank you for your attention and cooperation to our Safe Arrival procedure. Page 3 of 4 Room 105’s Zoo Trip th On Friday May 20 , we went to The Toronto Zoo. When we got there we looked at some animals like gorillas, turtles, penguins and the baby pandas. My favourite animal was the gorilla. They were really funny because one of them was holding a stuffy and he was hugging it. Also the gorillas were really cute. This zoo trip wasn’t just for fun. It was also for our science unit. We are learning about animal categories like, mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, insects and amphibians. I learned that some animals live in water and some animals live on land. I felt happy on the zoo trip because we saw some different kinds of animals By: Simrah Imzan News @ HG Room105, what did you learn at the zoo? For the safety of the children, ALL VISITORS must sign in at the office so we are always aware of who is in the school. . We complete all tasks and Each month HG holds an assembly to recognize students who have demonstrated that specific Character Trait of the month in their daily school activities. Please review with your child(ren) at home and we will do our best to lead by example at the school. Our boys and girls soccer teams had another great season. Both finished with winning records, and the students learned so much about soccer, teamwork and cooperation. A big thank you goes out to Mr. Owens, Mr. Daniels and Mme. Kennedy for volunteering their time to coach our students. “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” - Pele News @ HG Page 4 of 4 June 2016 HOLD THESE DATES FOR HG Terry Fox Sponge Toss PIZZA LUNCH Our final school Pizza Day of the year will be on Thursday June 9th. RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS Hunter’s Glen School website Hunter’s Glen Jr. P.S. 16 Haileybury Drive Toronto M1K 4X5 We recognize student positive social behaviours through our “Random Acts of Kindness” bulletin board in our first floor hallway. Ask your child about this school initiative and thank you in advance for your support! Phone: (416) 396-6340 E-mail: [email protected] Twitter: @HuntersGlenJPS ATTENDANCE – IT REALLY MATTERS Students need to be present and engaged in order to learn. If we all agree that schools are a gateway to the future, then we know this starts right from Kindergarten. Research shows that coming to school on time is very important to the success of a child’s early experiences with school. Missing 1.5 days of school each month equates to students missing one full month of curriculum instruction. The impact could result in gaps in education, students feeling disconnected with peers and the learning process. Tips for Parents – How to Improve Your Child’s Attendance: Discuss with your child what happened at school each day – What did you learn? What did your friends learn? Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious foods and getting enough sleep and exercise Avoid family trips during school instructional days Help you child prepare for the next school day Please use the following strategies above to encourage your children to attend school regularly and on time. Research tells us that attendance is the single most important factor in school success for a child. Let’s work together to ensure this happens Brush-A-Mania Contest Winners…Room 105!
