Northridge Local Schools History of Western Music Course of Study Course: History of Western Music Grade Level:912 Recommended: Length: 1 Semester (18 Weeks) Credit:1/2 Course fee: None Course Description: This course will begin with an overview of music in classical antiquity, the developments of music with relation to the musical tradition of Jewish heritage and the growth of Christianity, and medieval secular vocal and instrumental music. We will then trace the development of polyphony, music in the late middle ages, and the course of musical developments through the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, TwentiethCentury, and Modern eras. We will examine the social, political, and historical background issues which influenced each composer's style. Students will learn to differentiate style characteristics between each of the identified musical eras. Course work will include active listening, reading and research into composers' lives and contributions to music history. Special topics, as well as the history of Jazz, Rock, and American Popular music may be explored as time allows.
