1 LIONS CLUB OF GREEN ISLAND JUNE 2016 Bulletin Tea Meeting – 6.30 pm……..3rd Tuesday of the month at the Mosgiel Station. Board Meeting – 6.00 pm……….2nd Tuesday of the month—venue to be advised by secretary Jim Pine.. PAST PRESIDENTS of the LIONS CLUB OF GREEN ISLAND line up at the 40th celebrations in 2011 at the Green Island Rugby Club. 2 Green Island The suburb of Green Island lies within the boundaries of the Dunedin City and shares its name with an uninhabited island off the coast of Dunedin. The suburb of Green Island is actually not near the sea. Formerly a borough, it took its name from the Green Island bush, a forested area on the hills between the southern boundary of Green Island and Blackhead on the coast, 3 kilometres south of Green Island. THE ISLAND – Green Island is a small uninhabited island located close to the mouth of the Kaikorai Stream. The island’s Māori name is Okaiha. The Sydney sealer vessel Brothers, chartered by Robert Campbell and under the command of Robert Mason, had a crew of eleven men. In November 1809 Mason dropped eight of the crew on an island off of Dunedin. One of the crew was a man called William Tucker who later settled at Murdering Beach near the Otago Heads. He referred to his time spent on this island as being on the ‘Isle of Wight’. Many believe this reference to be Green Island. However he could have been referring to Taieri Island a few kilometres to the south. If this is the case then Green Island may be the island referred to as ‘Ragged Rock’ where Mason dropped the other three members of his crew. Some of the men claimed to have stayed on these two islands from November 1809 until December 1810. Later, Green Island was referred to as St Michael’s Mount. It is likely it was named after the ship the St. Michael which had been used for sealing along the Otago coast in the 1820s. One of the sealers, Tommy Chaseland, recorded he lost a boat and all its crew when it was dashed on the island while trying to land. Chaseland was the sole survivor and he stayed alone overnight and next day was picked up by another boat. The name of Green Island may have come from the original name of the Kaikorai Stream. In the survey report on Otago, prepared by the New Zealand Company’s surveyor, Frederick Tuckett in June 1844, he recorded the stream as Green River and the Island off of its mouth as being Green Island. In the 1880s the island was mined for guano, bird dung used as fertiliser. THE SUBURB – Green Island has, since 1989, been officially an outer suburb of Dunedin on State Highway 1, eight kilometres west of the Dunedin City centre. The area was first settled in 1848 and a township developed there in the 1850s. It prospered as it was on the main road to the Taieri and then on to the Otago Goldfields. It was an independent borough from 1875 to 1989. The Green Island Borough Council area changed significantly from the time it was constituted in 1875 increasing over time to include Concord, Burnside and Abbottsford. The inclusion of Abbotsford was effective from 1 April 1974. All of the added areas which were incorporated into the Green Island Borough Council were originally part of the Taieri County Council. Neighbouring suburbs of Waldronville and Fairfield have always been in the Taieri County Council which became Silverpeaks County Council in October 1977. The township of Green Island boomed in the 1950s and 1960s when new State housing developments brought families to the area. 3 POST OFFICE – The new purpose-built Green Island Post Office was opened in 1911. It provided accommodation for the post mistress to live on the property. The Post Office closed on 31 March 1990. The building still stands. I have included the short history of the suburb of Green Island and Green Island Itself, as this is our 45th year serving the Green Island community. Many of our current and past Lions members have been associated with Green Island for many years and many of their families have been in the Greater Green Island area for generations. The term ‘The Island’ is significant. Many locals talk about living in the ‘ISLAND’, separated from Dunedin by Lookout Point and from Mosgiel by Saddle Hill. I look forward to our 50th celebration. If you want an enjoyable and entertaining trip away, keep the last weekend in October free for the Clubs annual fishing trip to Twizel. You can come for 4 days or simply the weekend. Everything is provided, including fantastic scenery and the usual entertainment. If you are not fishing there are plenty of other things to do and see in the Twizel area. See Merv Tikey if you are interested. 4 KEN’s MESSAGE Hi fellow Lions, Last months bulletin I talked about the rain—now it’s sunshine and more sunshine. Suddenly the man realized that the next day he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 AM for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, "Please wake me at 5:00 AM." He left it where he knew she would find it. The next morning the man woke up, only to discover it was 9 :00 AM and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go to see why his wife hadn't wakened him when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, "It is 5:00 AM. Wake up." Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests. <><><>>><><><><><><><><> At one point during a game, the coach called one of his 9-year-old baseball players aside and asked, "Do you understand what co-operaon is? What a team is?" "Yes, coach", replied the li!le boy. " “Do you understand that what ma!ers is whether we win or lose together as a team?" The li!le boy nodded in the affirmave. "So," the coach connued, "I'm sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, a!ack the umpire, or call him a pecker-head, dickhead or asshole. Do you understand all that?" Again, the li!le boy nodded in the affirmave. The coach connued, "And when I take you out of the game so that another boy gets a chance to play, it's not a dumb ass decision or that the coach is a shithead is it?" "No, coach." "Good", said the coach. "Now go over there and explain all that to your grandmother. 8 SMART ARSE ANSWERS It was mealtime during a flight on a British Airways plane: "Would you like dinner?" the flight attendant asked the man seated in the front row. "What are my choices?" the man asked. "Yes or no," she replied. A lady was picking through the frozen Chickens at a Woolworths store but she couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a passing assistant, "Do these Chickens get any bigger?" The assistant replied, "I'm afraid not, they're dead." The policeman got out of his car and the teenager he stopped for speeding rolled down his window. "I've been waiting for you all day," the Cop said. The kid replied, "Well I got here as fast as I could." When the policeman finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a ticket A truck driver was driving along on a country road. A sign came up that read " Low Bridge Ahead." Before he realised it, the bridge was directly ahead and he got stuck under it. Cars were backed up for miles. Finally, a police car arrived. The policeman got out of his car and walked to the truck's cab and said to the driver, "Got stuck, eh?" The truck driver said, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of diesel!" For the next two months we will be basking under a European Sun -I know, it’s a tough life, but someone has to do it - if anyone is keen to write a couple of bulletins while I am away—let me know soon as . Many thanks to the contributors to this months Bulletin.
