SATURDAY, 25th SEPTEMBER, 1943. 2d.
THE CITY CUP COMPETITION DRAWS TO A· CLOSE.
a nd Cork United, our Yisitors this afternoon, have
got a strong grip on it. They ha ve two obstacles to
0\·ercomf•
to-day aga inst us at Dalymount
a nd next Sunday at home again"it Drumcondra ! Th ey
have nine points, and th eir nearest challenge rs are
Drumcondra with Srl'e n. If Cork win to-day, the City'
Cup looks as if it is booked for the City on the Leefor th e first time in its history.
Up to date the matc hes played this season IJa\'e been
of a n in-and-out nat ure, and there have been some di sappointing displays .. . displays that will not encourage
big "gates " or incite the interest of Soccer fanspartial or impartial.
Last Sunday's game at Tolka Par k between Dru mcondra and Shelbourne was one exception to this rule.
They played before a fine "gate," and both teams put
up a display tha t will bring fans to the next game in
which they meet.
The greatest error th is srason seems to be faulty
forward fini shing. Ta ke, as an example, our matc h
agai nst Limerick last Saturday. We got at least eigh t or
nine gilt-edged scoring chances, but for some inexplicable
reason, our whol e forward line, even from easy positions,
failed to put .the ball into the net.

CHRYSL ER LIMO US IN ES FOR HIRE
It is as a res ult of inconsistent di splays that we \\'ill
not be interested in the final dcstinntion or this trophy,
but th e Selection Committee of the club are ali1·e
to the fact that our altack needs considerable impro\"ement, and wi th this thought in mind they have made
cha nges in t·he team for our important game thi s afternoon which may br ing the improl'ement sought after.
It is a bit earl y in the season ye t for much " new

to be not to rush into th e first t(•am young phtyer:-; of

If Cork succeed to-d ay and Orumcondra beat Sl. Jnme:-.'s

and if Dnun condra go to the M;trdyke next Sund ay nnd

sideboard the City Cup would rest this season.
J-l o\\'e\·er, things may not work out lik e that, ::md if
our boys can reproduce nnything like the form that they
showed against Dundalk last Sunday ll'eek, they mHy
stage one of those "surprises" that contri bute so much
to the "thrill" of Soccer. Th ough we are out of th e
running for this trophy, we ca n Uo much to add excitement to the Ana l stages by making the H ra,·ouriLPS,"

an exciting game, and we are confiden t that our boys will
stril'c hard to give a display that is in keeping with the
best traditions of the " Gypsies "!
BETWEEN YOU AND ME. ·.
HELLO, EVERYONE!
I know what you are going
to say to me this week:
"What's wrong with our
team?" A week or so ago we
meet Dundalk, who are con. sidered a really fine side, and
beat them by 4 goals to 2, and
on their ground at that! We
repeat this victory over them
a few days later at Daly·
mount in the Leinster Senior
Cup! Last Saturday at home
we enfertain Limerick ... a
team who up to then had not

up a "happy partnership," and if they give
Mick O'Flanagan plenty of the ball, Mr. Foley, Mr.

for them to cope with!
. To-day will be our sixth game in the City Cup,
and next week-end we play our concluding game in the
competition against Shamrock Rovers at Milltown . We
have also reached the semi-final stage of the Leinster

PAUL MORRIS
·WELCOME TO CORK
There is no stopping Cork's "March of Progress." In
another article on this page I have ref~rred to their
brilliant and consistent record over the past few seasons.
and here they are again this season out to try and make
another record by winning the Dublin Ctty Cup for the
8

shadow of a doubt, built up a 'really fine side ... a team
that the fans will always flock to see, because they arc
assured of seeing Soccer played as it should be played.
In Foley, Hayes and Duffy they possess three defenders
of a class that would be fit to play in England, Scotland
a nd Wales, and would hold their own with the best! If
they keep up their present form, I would not be the
· least bit surprised to see them selected en bloc for representatiYe honours! Dublin fans may protest at this
assertion- but I'm willing to bet my money on this
opinion! The re-signing of McGowan, their clever and
forceful right·half back of last season, will add strength
to their middle line. With the redoubtable and diminutiYe Hichie Noonan on the left fla11k a nd the sturdy and
resolute Johnny Doyle at centre-half. this half-back
line of our visitors to-day constitutes a defence that is
nearly as tough as the much-discussed "fortress of
Burope "-which means that our forwards will have to
give a greatly improved display over that which they
gave last week-if WE are going to stop Cork's "march
of progress" t his afternoon!
l 'ork's forward Jine can get goals-because in five
games they have found the net on sixteep. occasionsmore than any other club have scored, their nearest
challengers for this honQJIJ' being Drumcondra. who
have scored ·fifteen! In Jackie O'Reilly, Venner and
McCarthy they have three potential individual "match·
winners·· who may create havoc in our defence to-da.y
if they are allowed any scope at all!
So-irrespective of what club you follow-let us all
giYe Cork a rousing welcome to-day, thereby paying
tribute to a really great team.
BOYS WILL BE BOYS

the envy of some of our more prominent senior clubs.
Here it is-" What do YOU tbink of it?" Does it not
