Newsletter—Term Four Week 2 What a Day! Congratulations to all Rukuhia students for your great effort at Country Day last Friday. The sun was shining ( a pleasant change ) and the day was filled with excitement and competition. It takes a lot of hard work to rear an animal, you have to feed them, groom them and most importantly spend time with them. It was obvious that a great deal of time and effort was spent with your animals and it paid off on the day. Special thanks to Nicki, Karl Walker, Ray Cottrell also Malcom and Jody Ellis your help and organisation on the days leading up to and on the day was sensational, and it went off like clockwork. I would also like to thank the two judges and stewards – you did a great job. To the PTA – again thanks for your support and feeding the masses and the wonderful job with the competitions in the hall and also thanks to the ladies from Rural Woman who came and judged the entries. Big thanks also to the children, the entries were amazing , well done. We are already looking forward to next year – so have a chat with your parents and caregivers and get an animal organised and join in on our special day. A special welcome back to our year 8 students, who at the end of this year will be moving off to college. Enjoy the last term here at Rukuhia School and we wish you all the best for 2016. It has been great to see so many happy, well-rested children after an exciting break. An extra special welcome to our new children in Room 1 – Nina, Molly and Carter. It is great to have you in Room 1. In mathematics, we are learning about grouping objects, gathering data, displaying data and interpreting data as part of our statistics unit. The children have been practising using tally marks to find things in the garden and have made a pictograph to show their favourite Country Day animal. We continue to read and write every day. Writing is going to link in this terms topic – ‘Bush Detectives’. Through this unit we will be focussing on developing our observational skills and gathering evidence to support our scientific claims. We will be using a lot of descriptive words and using scientific vocabulary. As part of this Science Education Unit, I have booked a trip to Maungatautari Ecological Reserve for Thursday 12th of November – please save this date on your calendar and I will give you more information about this in the near future. Room 2 Laura Schnuriger [email protected] Welcome Back! The weather is heating up so please remember to slap on some sunscreen and send your child to school with a school hat! Our topic focus this term is Antarctica and the Arctic where we will be discovering more about these colder climates and exploring the ecosystems that survive in such a cold environment. Ask your child about their school plane ticket (pretend of course!) In number this term I will be introducing the idea of multiplication. Here we focus on the term “groups of” this means that the multiplication symbol is asking us to figure out how many there would be if we have 3 groups of 4 (3x4= ). We will link this closely with skip counting too. You can help at home by also using this language for learning. We always take the opportunity for statistics in mathematics so on Country Day we busily gathered data and are now displaying in tally charts and various types of graphs. You can help our statistics learning at home by grouping objects with your child and placing these into a chart. E.g sorting the cutlery draw. Pose a question such as “I wonder how many knives, forks and spoons we have?” Ask your child what they could do to figure this out and help them put it into a chart or graph. Thank you to those amazing people who kept up their reading over the holidays! That extra hard work certainly pays off! Well done! We continue to foster the development of independence in their reading, where they can use strategies to decode and understand the texts they are reading. Please listen closely to your child reading, perhaps asking them a few questions about the story afterwards too. Spelling will continue through to the end of term, Room 2 has worked really hard on their spelling and we have some awesome spellers in this class! Our awesome writing this term involves some effort from home too! If you haven’t met him already we have a class penguin called Mr Fluffy he is visiting homes over the term to come along on an adventure with you! We are all looking forward to the summertime and getting back into the pool to cool off nearer the end of term. Thanks parents for all your wonderful support! Miss Schnuriger Room 3 Jane Coles & Leanne Adam [email protected] Welcome back to Term 4. We would like to welcome Harrison Hurley to our class as our trainee teacher this term. Harrison is on teaching practice in Room 3 for the next eight weeks. Please take time to introduce yourself to Harrison. The students are enjoying learning how to write letters. This week they are planning to write ‘pretend’ letters to family members requesting to buy an ‘unusual pet’. The students have created some interesting reasons why they should have their particular pet… we will display the finished letters and artwork next week. We are very impressed with the reading progress of all the students in Room 3 - please continue to listen to your child read each day this term. We have been continuing to focus on the strategies to help with reading such as: using prior knowledge, making connections and asking questions. Reminder that regulation school hats are now compulsory. Just a reminder that some children still need to pay for their terracotta pots - the cost for these is $3. We are currently organising our trip to Mystery Creek on Thursday 29th October. The children and helpers will be travelling by bus. If you are using ‘pay as you go’, then you will need to forward the cost of the trip to the office before Wednesday 28th October. A notice will have come home tomorrow regarding this. In maths we are currently looking at statistics. Ask your child to show you how tally marks work or how to make a pictogram. Over the next week, we will be counting different things and presenting them in different ways. Room 3 Jane Coles & Leanne Adam [email protected] We are doing run, jump, throw for P.E. at present, in the build up for either interschool athletics or Paterangi sports day. If your child is year 3, book mark the 25th November for this great day out. Parents and toddlers are very welcome. Children need to be 8 years old and meet the qualification standards to enter the interschools athletics which is on 11 November. Room 4 Debbie Moore & Anneke Esselbrugge [email protected] [email protected] Congratulations to the children of Room 4 who participated in Country Day last Friday. Whether you had a lamb, a calf, or a goat, the effort you put in to prepare your animal for the big day is to be commended. Congratulations also to those children who entered the Hall competitions with a country theme. Room 4 children without animals enjoyed collecting statistical information from Country Day for mathematics, which will be graphed and analysed. We also have the great carrot investigation going, where we are collecting data from dehydrating carrots in class. The spring vegetable planting has been completed. There are a few camp forms still to be returned. Please do this as soon as possible so we can start preparations with accurate numbers for our camp. Thank you to those who have already offered their support and help. With less than eight weeks of learning left, please make sure you encourage your child with their home learning. There are 10 spelling words per week to learn, plus reading for enjoyment for at least 20 minutes per day, and also very importantly, continue to practice learning basic facts and times tables. Room 5 Greg New [email protected] Room 5 are super excited as camp is only 2 weeks away. We are busy studying all about democracy and how our government works in preparation for our trip to the Beehive. We are looking at a NZ success story in Weta Workshops and getting ready for our visit to Te Papa which should be a highlight for many of the students who have never been to our national museum. We are just concluding our series of lessons on Positive Puberty. Please discuss the topics we have talked about with your child as it is a good springboard for discussion. I have to say I am extremely pleased with the level of knowledge and the mature attitude the children demonstrated during the unit. They should be very proud.
