As we move into the
new year I hope you see
a greater purpose, a
greater year, a greater
you. Self confidence is
the most active quality a
person can have. How
can anyone see how
awesome you really are
if you can't see it
yourself? Challenges
are what make life
interesting and
overcoming them is
what will make your life
meaningful.
Don't be afraid to stand
for what you believe in
even if that means
standing alone .
January 1st was the first
blank page of a 365
page book, write a good
one. Live, Laugh, Love.
Happy New Year !

Highlights of District 145
December 10, 2013
Membership Meeting
The meeting was called to
order by Unit Chairman, Cecelia
Stacy at 4:30 p.m.
Roll Call of Officers: All present.
A motion was made to bypass the
reading of minutes from the
previous meeting.
Report of Membership Actions:
Dale Sandell reported on the
FSD145 arbitration case saying
that the closing brief was due
January 3. He also reported
that USW is changing the way
they handle grievances at Titan
Tire.
Committee Reports:
 Sick Leave Bank: There are
592 days in the sick bank at this
time with the added days from 24
new people who joined. Next
enrollment will be in 2015.
 Classified Advisory Council:
#1 Aesop: Concerns were
raised about not having enough
subs for paras to cover the
amount of absences. If a sub
accepts a job for a certain day and
then cancels to take another job,
they should not be able to see
other jobs available for that
day. We also wondered if there
was a way to keep a person from
accepting a job and then
repeatedly cancelling.
Pat Norman stated that
certified people are being asked if
they would be willing to sub for
paraeducators. Could administration talk to subs about
expanding their "categories" to
include more jobs such as IMT,
Excel, and Lifeskills?
Pat Norman told us to talk to
building secretaries to get a list of
classified subs. However,
secretaries call for a sub only in
an emergency or when there is
not enough time before the school
day starts to list it on Aesop.
Pat will set up a meeting
about Aesop with a team of
paraeducators, Angie O’Brien,
2
Cheryl Trainer, and herself for
early December.
#2 Audio /Visual Recording:
The union will be advising all
members not to sign this consent
form and that anyone who does
sign leaves the door open to be
disciplined.
#3 Professional Development:
Paras are being given the
opportunity for training at Lincoln
Douglas. (PT training, seizure
training, etc.) However, is
anything being done at other
building to make paraprofessionals feel better equipped to
handle their jobs?
Excel paras at the high school
were asked if they felt they
needed training. All felt training
was necessary in caring for high
needs children. Areas suggested
for training included:
* sensory
* what to do for low muscle control
* proper lifting/positioning children
in wheelchairs
* CPR Training
* Heimlich maneuver training
* seizure training
* First aid training
* Autism spectrum and how to
deal with behaviors
* Body mechanics (proper ways to
lift w/o injury for employees)
* safe ways to transfer students
(wheelchair to bed, etc)
If you have any concerns or
topics for future meetings an email
should be sent to Dara Willison at
Lincoln Douglas School.

“THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HUMMM”
Sure, the job will pay your bills, but
maybe, just maybe the assignment is
more important
and should be your real and true focus.

Worrying does not empty tomorrow
of its troubles, it empties today of its
strength.
Lesson: Identify what has been holding you
back from your career success. Most likely, it’s
been worry and fear. In the New Year, it’s time
to leave fear behind. The things you are afraid
of are often the things most worth doing.
Literature is the art of discovering
something extraordinary about
ordinary people
and saying with ordinary words
something extraordinary . . .
Crockpot Chicken & Dumplings
4 chicken breasts (boneless, skinless)
2 T. butter
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can cream of celery soup
3 1/2 c. chicken broth
1 onion, finely diced
1 c. celery, diced
1 c. carrots, dived
2 chicken bouillon cubes
10 oz. can of biscuits (or you can make your
own)
EXCLUDING THE BISCUITS, put all
ingredients in the crockpot, cover and cook on
low for 8 hours. About an hour before serving,
remove chicken and pull into pieces and
return to the soup mixture.
Open the biscuits and tear into pieces, place
dough on top and cook until the dough is no
longer raw in the center (approx. 1 hour).
