Statements
Mission
The mission of Cumberland University is to provide a contemporary liberal arts education to students seeking a
high-quality, personalized college experience, which will empower them not only to have a successful and
productive career, but also to thrive intellectually, professionally, personally, and spiritually for a lifetime.
Background
There are few universities in the Southeast with a richer heritage than Cumberland University. Founded in 1842,
Cumberland University boasts as alumni more than 80 congressman, including Albert Gore, Sr., two justices of
the U.S. Supreme Court, and United States Secretary of State Cordell Hull, who also was awarded the Nobel
Prize for Peace in 1945. Other notable alumni include James Lafayette Bomar, president of Rotary International;
Thomas P. Gore, United State Senator from Oklahoma; and Myles Horton, founder of the Highlander School,
where men and women such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, learned of the peaceful routes to social
justice. Cumberland offers a variety of educational, athletic, and social experiences to enhance the learning
opportunities of the current student body. The university has exceptional undergraduate programs in the
sciences and social sciences, fine arts and music, business administration and economics, education and
nursing. Graduate degrees are offered in business administration, education, public service management, fine
arts, and sport and exercise.

the 174 year institution.
• In February 2016, Dr. Mark Cheatham, CU professor of history, launched a major project called "The Papers

the eighth president of the United States of America.
• May 2015, the Cumberland University Board of Trust approved a new strategic plan set forth under the
leadership of president, Dr. Paul C. Stumb.

Goals:
• Implementation of the new strategic plan over the course of this academic year. Elements of the new strategic
plan will focus in the following areas:

more personalized and optimized student pathways and highly focused development efforts.
2.Friend-Building - This area includes a more robust corporate development plan that encompasses
internships, mentoring and continuing education. It also is aimed at increasing community engagement with
the University.
3.Infrastructure Quality Improvement - This includes not only the infrastructure as it relates to facilities but also
to programmatic, staffing and procedural matters.

Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing and Health Professions
Description
Nearly 90% of Cumberland’s nursing school graduates consistently pass
the national nursing licensure exam. We know how to prepare our
students. This success – and the dream behind it – started with the
interest and generosity of the University's many friends. University Medical
Center generously provided an area for the Learning Resource
Laboratory, major educational equipment, and supplies needed for
nursing skills simulation. Many other facilities and organizations in the
Middle Tennessee area contributed seed money, student scholarship
money, or equipment/supplies to enable Cumberland to meet the needs of
the Middle Tennessee area for well-prepared nurses. In the spring of
2004, the school’s name was changed to the Jeanette C. Rudy School of
Nursing in honor of Dr. Jeanette Cantrell Rudy, a retired nurse and
longtime friend and benefactor of Cumberland University. Today, the
program is growing exponentially – and successfully.
