Convicted of violating the state’s primary seat belt law and fined $5 apiece: The Iola Register www.iolaregister.com Obituaries Wilma Solomon Former Humboldt resident Wilma Solomon, 95, of Wi l l i a m s burg, Va., died Sunday, July 17, 2011. She was born Jan. 27, 1916, in the Vilas community, to Arthur and Olga C a r l s o n . Wilma Solomon She attended Wilson County schools and graduated from Buffalo High School in 1934. She received her teaching certificate from Pittsburg State Teacher’s College and taught six years in rural schools in Wilson County. On May 4, 1941, she married Arthur Solomon of Rose. During their marriage, they farmed, raised commercial and registered beef cattle and trained mules, while Arthur pursued his career as manager of Production Credit Associations in Chanute, Greensburg and Howard. During their active years, they lived in several Kansas communities including Humboldt, Benedict, Madison, Caney and Eureka, before retiring in Humboldt in the 1980s. In 2006, she moved to Virginia to be near her family. She was a member of Center Ridge Evangelical United Brethren Church as a child. As an adult, she participated in the education and women’s programs at First Baptist Church in Humboldt, Grant Avenue Baptist Church in Chanute, as well as Baptist and United Methodist churches in the other communities. She liked to garden, bake and make homemade soap. Throughout her life she practiced her spiritual gift of hospitality, which she extended locally and internationally. She is survived by a son, Les (L.D.) Solomon and his wife, Johanna, Williamsburg; a daughter, Joyce Miller and her husband, Byron, Glen Ellyn, Ill.; five grandchildren, Shannan Bolinger, Newport News, Va., Alys Crouse, Virginia Beach, Va., Darren and Pieter Miller, Wheaton, Ill., and Derek Miller, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; 10 great-grandchildren; and was known as “Grammie” to many children in the places where she had lived. Her husband, a daughter, Evelyn Solomon, two brothers, Melvin and Art Carlson Jr., and two sisters, Opal Erickson and Gladys Spong, died earlier. Memorial services will be Oct. 9 at First Baptist Church in Humboldt. Memorials may be given to Hospice Care of Kansas or First Baptist Church in Humboldt. Clarence was born Oct. 20, 1933, in Garnett, to Pete and Edna (Harper) H y d o r n . Clarence He served Hydorn in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and in the Kansas Army National Guard for many years. On Dec. 18, 1954, he married Alice Marie Skinner in Iola, where they made their home. He worked for the railroad, then Humboldt Brick and Tile before starting work with the Iola Fire Department on Sept. 10, 1966. He retired on Dec. 31, 1993, with the rank of chief, a position he had held since 1986. His wife died on June 24, 2008. Clarence was a member of Iola American Legion and enjoyed fishing and building and flying airplanes. He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Wright and Karen Winner and her husband, Mick, Iola; a brother, Carl, St. Edward, Neb.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant brother and granddaughter, Tracy Vest. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
