• Algebra
• I can recognize direct variation in
tables and graphs.
• How do I check for direct variation in a table
or graph?
Key Term:
proportional relationship
A proportional relationship is a relationship between two variable quantities x and y, where y is a constant multiple (k) of x. This can be expressed in the simple equation, y = kx
In other words, proportional relationship and direct variation mean the same thing.

• Algebra
• I can tell if an equation shows direction
variation.
• How do I check an equation for
proportionality?
proportional relationship- a relationship
between x and y written as:
y = kx
What makes
something a
proportional
relationship?
How do I
check an
equation for
direct
variation?
Steps) we can do this two ways:
a) make a table look for 0,0 and a constant relationship (x or )
or
b) graph it look for a straight line through origin (0, 0)
Example 1: Is this proportional?
y+1=x
Example 2: Is this proportional?
2y = x
