THE GOVERNANCE: A MULTI-TIERED INTERGOVERNMENTAL STRUCTURE GENERAL ASSEMBLY ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN Operational activities and the operational policy guidance Normative support functions and the normative policy guidance EXECUTIVE BOARD ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES General Assembly Resolution 48/162 (A/Res/48/162) The functions of the Executive Board are: To implement the policies formulated by the General Assembly and coordination and guidance from the Economic and Social Council To receive information from and give guidance to the head of the Entity To ensure that the activities and operational strategies are consistent with the overall policy guidance set forth by the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council. To approve administrative and financial plans To give inter-governmental support To give oversight to the Entity To supervise operational activities THE EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERSHIP 41 members who serve on a rotating basis: 10 from the Group of African States 10 from the Group of Asia-Pacific States 4 from the Group of Eastern European States 6 from the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States 5 from the Group of Western European and Other States (unique rotation scheme) 6 from contributing countries The Economic and Social Council elects members to the Executive Board for a term of three years. The annual session of the Executive Board is generally held around May/ June. • Pre-Session Informal Meetings • Resumed Sessions The annual session of the Executive Board is generally held around September. The Joint Executive Board session occurs annually and is generally held in January/February.
