Our dedicated Super Boom Hire Desk can be contacted on 0843 770 1350 or emailed on [email protected] The Z-135 and ZX-135 Super Boom Fleet Standard 4 RENTALSGROUP Technical Information ACCESS OUR EXPERTISE Technical Information Z-135/ZX135 Safety Enhancement The fleet of 135 Super Booms has been further enhanced with a Safety Limit Switch, which improves the safe working envelope of the 135 Super Booms and thus safeguarding the users of the equipment. Why add this Safety Enhancement? The Z-135 and ZX-135 Super Boom Fleet Standard 5 RENTALSGROUP ACCESS OUR EXPERTISE Technical Information for the Z135/ZX135 The secondary boom of both the Z-135 and the ZX-135 can continue to rise after it has started to extend, in the event that the secondary boom angle sensor is calibrated incorrectly. In this event there is the potential for the machine to fall into an unsafe working envelope which would inevitably put the operator/s at risk. In order to safe guard against a potential miss-calibration and to stop the secondary boom extend before or until it has elevated to full, Kimberly Rentals Group have successfully proven the use of a CE approved safety limit switch on the Secondary Boom arm which stops secondary boom extension and shows a fault on the ground control box, which is unique to Kimberly Rentals Group. Z-135/ZX-135 Safety Enhancement Features:•Fitted to all Kimberly Rentals Group Z-135/ZX-135 super booms as standard, free of charge. •Does not reduce the safe working load, all original “as designed” manufacturer’s safeguards continue to be in place and are NOT compromised in any way. •Tamper & Vibration Proof Fixings for the Safety Limit Switch itself complete with clear warning labels. •Protection deflector plate to protect the Safety Limit Switch in case of falling debris. •Tamper Proof Fixings now on the user interface panel control enclosure to prevent tampering of the critical electronic control system. •Clearer warning labels defining manufacturers responsibilities and guidance to operators. •CE certified and marked both component parts and the safety enhancement assembly itself. •Design, installation & preventative maintenance endorsed by UKAS registered TUV Rhineland. • Insurer approved. The Z-135 and ZX-135 Super Boom Fleet Standard 6 RENTALSGROUP ACCESS OUR EXPERTISE What components are used and where are they fitted? Added Safety Limited Switch Inside of Side Plate Safety Warning Labels Figure 2 - A diagram of a Genie Type Z135/70 MEWP, with the machine’s booms stowed. 1 The Secondary boom 4 The Primary Boom 2 The Tubes of the Secondary Boom (retracted) 5 The Jib Boom 3 The Ground Control Box 6 The Platform Extra Caution labels to ensure correct usage of the Key Switch on the control Enclosure and reinforcing that Machine Calibration MUST be carried out by the Manufacturer. The Z-135 and ZX-135 Super Boom Fleet Standard 7 RENTALSGROUP ACCESS OUR EXPERTISE Z135 Safety Enhancement Safety Considerations:Functionality of the Safety Limit Switch Assembly Fitted to the Z-135 Secondary Boom 1 Operator Interface Any electronic or electrical device fitted to the machine must be easy for the operator to reset at the ground level control panel only. The Z135’s TCON ground control panel will register a fault when the limit switch trips in the event of a miss calibration of the Secondary Boom and the machine will shut down. The operator DOES NOT touch or re-set the switch assembly. 2 Risk Transfer Any device fitted must not introduce any significant additional risks to the operator during the normal operation of the machine. Overall risk is reduced, the switch is a failsafe in case of miss-calibration of the Secondary Boom of the Z135 through human error (whilst inputting figures through its TCON membrane keypad). 3 Safe Working Envelope of the MEWP Any device fitted should not reduce the operator’s working envelope to an extent that they would be unable to undertake their normal works without significant improvisation. If the Z135 is calibrated correctly by Genie (the manufacturer) which is now checked by the safety Limit switch, then operators will be able to undertake their work without significant improvisation. 4 Protection to the MEWP operator Any device fitted should afford protection to the operator in all significant situations whilst elevating, reversing or slewing. The Z135’s TCON ground control panel will register a fault when the limit switch trips in the event of a miss calibration of the Secondary Boom and the machine will shut down. 5 Circumvention of the additional safety device. Any additional safety device must be designed & fitted in such a way as to guard against potential misuse or removal by the operator. The Safety Limit Switch is fitted to the inner side of the secondary boom side plate of the Z135, with tamper proof screws and has a security strip label across its body to clearly indicate any attempt to misuse or dislodge. A clear warning label is also located on the inner side of the side plate to the left hand side of the switch position in order to warn users or inspectors to report tampering to the Service Manager. The Switch is protected by a debris shield above it which is secured to the Secondary Boom side plate edge with tamper proof screws. Quality & Safety Standards for the Safety Limit Switch Assembly 6 CE Marking Any device/s fitted must be CE marked and supported by the requisite certification and Technical Files audited and approved by a UKAS registered Organisation. All parts used in the Limit Switch Assembly are CE marked and comply with applicable design, test & safety standards including :• Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC; •EN 280:2001+A2:2009, Mobile elevating work platforms; •EN ISO 12100:2010, Safety of machinery. General principles for design. Risk assessment and risk reduction; •EN ISO 13849-1:2008, Safety of machinery - Safetyrelated parts of control systems. •Declaration for the Safety Limit Switch Assembly provided by TUV Rheinland (UKAS Registered). •Audit Report from TUV Rheinland to illustrate due diligence from Kimberly in their design, testing, installation & preventative maintenance of the Safety Limit Switch Assembly on Z135 machines. •Technical File constructed with all relevant documentation as approved by TUV Rheinland. 7 Thorough Examination & Preventative Maintenance Any device fitted must be thoroughly inspected before each hire by the supplier, and evidence of such a check provided at the time of hire. A Specific PDI / Thorough Examination process with accompanying documentation for the Z135 has been created .Additionally a dedicated Service Work instruction for Service Engineer’s to follow with care points illustrated for Quality Assurance enforcement has been created. All documentation authored, checked & approved. 8 BS EN 280:2001+A2:2009 Mobile elevating work platforms Any device fitted must not impinge on the Machinery Regulations PUWER or EN280. A device that extends the physical structure of a MEWP beyond its current design limits is likely to require the approval of the MEWP manufacturer. The Safety Limit Switch Assembly does NOT extend the Physical structure of the Z135 beyond its design limits / safe working envelope. The device is there to LIMIT the Secondary Boom structure & thus the machine from working outside its safe working envelope (design limits). 9 Insurance Any device fitted should be Insurer approved by the supplier/hirer for its intended use. Insurer approved. 10 Instructions Additional instructions on the safe operation of the device must be provided by the hirer at the point of delivery. No instruction required as the operator will not be operating the Safety Limit Switch.
