EXHIBITIONS
Admission is by donation.
Dwelling: Three exhibitions about house + home
These exhibitions share an Opening Reception on April 9, 3-5pm.
Yam Lau: Room
Hovering between moving and still image, architectural
photography, and film, Yam Lau’s video projection Room: An
Extension (2008) explores the permeability of intimate and
public spaces. This architectural self portrait re-creates familiar
spaces in varied dimensionalities and perspectives that unfold
like “marvellous origami”.
Apr 2 – June 4
Sitely Premises
This group exhibition examines the way in which the exterior
spaces of the single family detached home—the spaces we
associate with “the yard” and “the garden”—have become
important sites for art and artists on Canada’s West Coast.
Blending sculpture, performance, installation art, landscape
architecture, photography, and moving image, recent
generations of artists challenge our preconceptions of house
and home, while investigating the limits of landscape art,
exhibition space, and the artist’s studio.
Domestic Lives: Works from the
Permanent Collection
Homes can be gathering spots for family and friends,
sanctuaries from a hectic or threatening world, or places
for personal expression. They can also be sites for familial
tension and emotional stress. For artists, domestic interiors
reveal the realities of household life and the social and
cultural norms of a period. Drawn from the Gallery’s
permanent collection, these artworks consider the intimate,
artistic, social and the sometimes eccentric relationships
people have with their residences.

To June 5
In Transition: New Art from India
Surrey Urban Screen: Transience
Commuters and residents will see and hear animated images
and sounds come and go, as the SkyTrain passes by Surrey
Urban Screen every evening after sundown. This interactive
public artwork created by Flicker Art Media (Aleksandra Dulic
& Kenneth Newby) is activated by the passing trains, and the
imagery references the diversity of those travelling by transit
in the Lower Mainland. Tune into the artwork at FM 89.9
when you are nearby using your car stereo or MP3 player.
Surrey Urban Screen is an outreach venue of the Surrey Art
Gallery, and is located at Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre,
13458–107A Avenue.
The exhibition can be viewed from 30 minutes after sunset
until midnight.
Held over to Apr 30
There/Here: Germaine Koh and Gordon Hicks
To be tele-present is to be in two spaces at the same time
through technological communication. Vancouver artist
Germaine Koh and Toronto artist Gordon Hicks are interested
how, in our age of everyday telepresence manifested by
constant phone and computer use, relationships between
time and space are being altered in significant ways. There/
Here presents a compelling work of interactive sculpture that
addresses the influence of technology on our daily lives.
To Mar 15
Since the early 1990s, Indian contemporary artists have
increasingly made art that responds to the vivid worlds of
global cinema and television, music videos, the Internet, new
media advertisements, and new video game technologies.
With an eye on its past and a view to the future, the artists in
this exhibition respond to the social, political, and economic
implications of their country becoming a major world
economy. Presented with the Vancouver Biennale.
To Mar 27

interactive software, original audio tracks, hundreds of
digital photographs, and video documenting Surrey’s people
and places, a team of youth has created a dynamic portrait

April: Roxsane Tiernan
While in Japan in the 1980’s, Roxsane was introduced to
Chigiri-e’—a Japanese torn paper technique. As an artist, the
discovery of Chigiri-e’ opened her creative channels, and she
revels in all its aspects, including the variety of papers, and their
texture and appearance (sturdy or fragile, bright or hazy, fibrous
or sheer). Using playful and audacious colour, Roxsane combines
the exuberance of acrylics with Chigiri-e to create mixed media
pieces that ‘talk’.
