Ben–Bueno, Marina ¿qué es el Kindle?
Marina–El Kindle es un libro digital, tiene una pantalla muy grande, y un teclado chiquitito,
pequeño.
Ben–Sí, ¿y cómo es de grande? ¿es muy grande?
Marina–Aproximadamente como un libro de bolsillo…
Ben–Aha.
Marina–Un poquito más ancho…
Ben– Mhmm.
Marina–… pero más finito.
Ben–Y casi todo es pantalla.
Marina–Mhmm.
Ben– El teclado es muy pequeño, ¿verdad?
Marina–Mhmm.
Ben–Y ¿cómo funciona? Si yo quiero leer un libro en el Kindle, ¿cómo consigo el libro?
Marina–Pues lo compras, los libros cuestan aproximadamente unos $10, y tardan menos de un
minuto en descargarse.
Ben–Vale, pero tengo que ir a la página Web de Amazon o lo hago directamente desde mi Kindle?
Marina–Lo haces directamente desde tu Kindle. Desde el lugar donde tu estés.
Ben–¡Ah! Vale.
Marina–No tienes que conectarte a Internet.
Ben–Me han dicho que es posible, también, bajar los primeros dos o tres capítulos de un libro, eh,
como una prueba.
Marina–Sí, puedes bajarte los primeros libros, los primero capítulos de manera gratuita.
Ben–¡Qué bien!
Marina–Así puedes comprobar si te interesa el libro antes de comprarlo.
Ben–Eso me parece muy interesante.
Marina–Sí.
Ben–Hay otra cosa que me gusta mucho del Kindle, y eso es que puedes bajar también periódicos,
por ejemplo El New York Times o The Guardian, del mismo día. Entonces, te despiertas por la
mañana, bajas dos o tres periódicos, y en el metro puedes leer el periódico sin tener que comprar
mucho papel.
Marina–Es una manera muy ecológica de leer, porque no hay consumo en papel.
Ben–Y, pues, ¿qué más cosas puedes hacer con el Kindle?
Marina–Puedes leer algunos blogs.
Ben–Sí vale. Y también, me parece, que puedes navegar por Internet.

Marina–Puedes acceder, por ejemplo, a la Wikipedia.
Ben–Sí, es verdad. Pero todo es en blanco y negro, entonces no es muy interesante para ver fotos
en la Web, ¿verdad?
Marina–No.
Ben–¿Tiene alguna cosa más negativa?
Marina–El precio.
Ben–Sí.
Marina–Es un poco caro.
Ben–¿Cuánto cuesta el Kindle?
Marina–Cuesta casi 400 dólares.
Ben–Sí, pero están agotados. Amazon ha vendido todos los Kindle que tenían, no se cuantos.
Marina–En cinco horas.
Ben–En cinco horas. No nos dicen cuantos, pero imagino que un millón.
Marina–Bueno, no sabemos.
Ben–No sabemos. Bueno Marina en conclusión qué te parece ¿el Kindle es una cosa buena o
mala?
Marina–Me parece muy útil para gente que tiene largos desplazamientos en transporte público. Y
también para gente que realiza investigaciones, y tiene que tener muchos libros al alcance de la
mano.
Ben–Sí.
Marina–¿Y a ti?
Ben–A mi me parece muy interesante, y yo creo que es el futuro de los libros, sin duda. El Kindle
ahora no es muy bonito, sólo es en blanco y negro, pero en el futuro yo creo que todos tendremos
algo parecido. Así que para mi todo bien.
Marina–Muy bien.

3. Translation of the conversation
Ben–Well, Marina, what is the Kindle?
Marina–The Kindle is a digital book, it has a very large screen, and a small, little keyboard.
Ben–Yes, and how big is it, is it very big?
Marina–About the size of a paperback book…
Ben–Ah.
Marina–A bit wider…
Ben– Mhmm.
Marina–… but slimmer.
Ben–And nearly the whole thing is screen.
Marina–Mhmm.
Ben–The keyboard is very small, right?
Marina–Mhmm.
Ben–And how does it work? If I want to read a book on the Kindle, how do I get the book?
Marina–Well, you buy it, the books cost around $10, and they take less that a minute to download.
Ben–OK, but do I have to go to Amazon’s web page, or do I do it directly from my Kindle?
Marina–You do it directly from you Kindle. From wherever you are.
Ben–Ah! OK.
Marina–You don’t have to connect to the Internet.
Ben–I’ve also heard that it’s possible to get the first two or three chapters of a book, as a test.
Marina–Yes, you can get the first books, the first chapters, free.
Ben–That’s great!
Marina–So you can see if the book interests you before buying it.
Ben–That seems really interesting to me.
Marina–Yes.
Ben–There is another thing I really like about the Kindle, and that is that you can also download
newspapers, for example The New York Times or The Guardian, for that day. So, you wake up in
the morning, you download two or three newspapers, and in the Metro you can read the paper
without having to buy a lot of paper.
Marina–It’s a very ecological way of reading, because no paper is used.
Ben–And, well, what else can you do with the Kindle?
Marina–You can read some blogs.
Ben–Yes, OK, and also I think you can browse the Internet.
Marina–You can access Wikipedia for example.
Ben–Yes, that’s right. But everything is in black and white, so it’s not very useful for looking at

photos on the web, right?
Marina–No.
Ben–Does it have any other negative points?
Marina–The price.
Ben–Yes.
Marina–It’s a bit expensive.
Ben–How much does the Kindle cost?
Marina–It costs nearly 400 dollars.
Ben–Yes, but they are out of stock. Amazon has sold all the Kindles they had, I’m not sure how
many.
Marina–In five hours.
Ben–In five hours. They won’t tell us how many, but I imagine a million.
Marina–Well, we don’t know.
Ben–We don’t know. Well, Marina, to sum up, what do you think, is the Kindle a good thing or a bad
thing?
Marina–I think it’s very useful for people who have long trips in public transport. And also for people
who are researching something, and need to have lots of books within arm’s reach.
Ben–Yes.
Marina–And you?
Ben–I think it’s very interesting, and I think it’s the future of books, without a doubt. The Kindle isn’t
very beautiful yet, but in the future I think that we will all have something similar. So for me, it’s all
good.
Marina–Great.

5. Cool Spanish!
¡Chulo!
Chulo is a very cool, and very informal, Spanish word that has several meanings (some
unmentionable here!) However, it is used everyday by ordinary Spanish people, with meanings
such as:
Eres un poco chulo
You are a bit of a show off
We can also use Chulear, the verb, in the same way:
Mira, David esta chuleando con su nuevo Kindle
Look at David, showing off with his new Kindle
We can also use chulo to mean cool, fantastic, or great:
Alicia ¡qué collar más chulo llevas!
Alicia, what a cool necklace you’re wearing!
In the same way, you will often hear Chulada:
¡Qué chulada de collar!
What a cool necklace!
