Job Title: Assistant Headteacher
Leadership Scale: 11-15
Job Purpose:
The Assistant Headteacher will hold formal leadership responsibility for key areas of whole school
improvement.
The Assistant Headteacher will be successful through the work of other leaders and professionals,
implementing the vision and strategic direction of the school. They will be successful team and
relationship builders who develop high performing teams for the future needs of the school and
its learners.
The Assistant Headteacher will both influence and facilitate school strategy through their line
management of their teams and in their own areas of responsibility.
The Assistant Headteacher will be expected to fulfil the professional duties of a Teacher as set out
in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions document. They will also be required to undertake a
range of operational and strategic responsibilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Duties








To support and advise the Headteacher
To assist the Headteacher in managing the school.
To undertake any professional duty of the Headteacher, which may be delegated by them,
including deputising in the absence of the Headteacher and/or Deputy Headteacher.
To be a vital channel of communication to the Headteacher and other members of SLT
optimising the flow of information.
To be an active member of the Senior Leadership Team, creating a culture of achievement
and success by good personal example and strong leadership.
To be a highly visible presence in the school, especially at break time, lunchtime, before
and after school and during lesson changeovers, ensuring school expectations are upheld
and colleagues are supported.
To maintain an awareness of local, national and global educational issues.
To help build, communicate and implement the schools shared vision and beyond.


















To make a significant contribution to school self-evaluation and improvement planning.
To work with the Headteacher and Governors in raising achievement throughout the
school.
To lead and manage change in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
To support and challenge at all levels to promote the ethos of the school as a learning
community.
To foster a culture in which excellent outcomes for all students and the key components of
personalised learning are integral to the work of everyone in the school.
To encourage professional attitudes amongst teaching and support staff.
To facilitate and ensure the highest standards of Teaching and Learning are delivered
across the school.
To contribute to the development, monitoring and evaluation of the curriculum.
To lead projects and initiatives.
To actively develop links with any relevant external agencies.
To take an active part in the appointment and promotion of staff, staff planning and coordination of staff development.
To attend appropriate meetings at department, whole school and governor level.
To attend Governors’ meetings as required, give presentations and contribute to the
Headteacher’s report.
To contribute to the maintenance and extension of active and constructive links with
parents and members of the wider community.
To work with other members of the senior Leadership Team, having a shared responsibility
for holding assemblies, participating in and supporting staff on duty rotas and staff support
regarding matters of students’ discipline.
To assist with the organisation and administration of annual, termly and day-to-day routine
of the school and arrangements for special occasions.
To take the responsibility for actively line managing CTLs and Departments and other staff
as required.
To perform such other duties required by the Headteacher and Governors as may be
commensurate with the nature of the post.
Specific Duties (subject to review at any time)






To be the school’s designated safeguarding lead; having overall responsibility to ensure
the highest standards of safeguarding.
To oversee the support provided to all children in need and their families; ensuring
student well-being and the removal of any obstacles to students’ learning.
To be the school’s lead on attendance; ensuring high levels of attendance for all students
and in particular key cohorts of students, including disadvantaged and SEND students.
To be the school’s designated teacher for looked after children; overseeing personal
education plans and ensuring looked after children are provided with all possible support
to enable them to succeed.
To liaise with a wide range of external agencies, including the Children’s Support and
Advice Service (CASS), the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) and social services.
To take the lead in developing opportunities for student leadership, including overseeing
the school’s prefect system.


To line manage the school’s student support manager and the school’s attendance and
admissions officer.
To provide regular and comprehensive reports to the governing body and the senior
leadership team for safeguarding, attendance and student welfare.
General
Be aware and comply with all safeguarding policies of the school.
Be aware of and promote health and safety throughout the school.
Other Duties
The post holder may be required to carry out duties other than those given in the job description,
as requested by the school. The particular duties and responsibilities of the post may vary without
changing its general character or level of responsibility. Such variations would not in themselves
justify a re-evaluation of the post.
