The CSIU SIS Gradebook enables teachers to define how marking period grades are calculated for each assignment category by specifying a value in the Grading Method field on the STAFF > STAFF SCHEDULE VIEWS: GRADEBOOK MENU > SETUP screen. There are four calculations available: (1) Averaging, (2) Summation Percentage, (3) Raw Score to Percentage, and (4) Summation. Click the Help button on the Gradebook Setup screen to view Grading Method definitions and examples. Use Summation when all categories have an equal weight of 1 (for example, Homework-1, Tests-1, Final Project-1). Use Averaging if the teacher wants to set up percentage category weights (such as Homework-30%, Tests-50% and Final Project-20%). Use Raw Score to Percentage to calculate an average of averages when category weights are unequal percentages. NOTE: Teachers can use different Grading Methods for different categories, and then combine the grades for each category in an overall marking period grade. If a mixture of Grading Methods is used, the marking period average will be calculated as a straight average of all the category averages. Example: A Gradebook might have two categories defined for a course, Homework and Tests. If Homework is set up to use Summation and the student’s average in that category is 80%, and Tests are set up to use Averaging and the student has an average of 100% in the Tests category, the marking period grade will be 90% (80+100)/2. NOTE: Teachers can give extra weight to a particular assignment within a category by increasing the Multiplier for that individual assignment (on the Gradebook Setup screen). Notice the Multiplier of 2 for Homework Assignment 3 in the spreadsheet below. NOTE: If a category has a weight equal to 0, those grades will NOT be included in the marking period average. Category weights are equal (both set to 1). The teacher has given extra weight to an assignment within the Homework category by assigning a Multiplier of 2 for Homework Assignment 3. The student has earned grades in Homework and Tests as follows: Weighted Total Points Earned Points Possible Points Earned Assignment 1 10 9 1 10 9 Assignment 2 10 9 1 10 9 Assignment 3 10 8 2 20 16 40 34 Summation Category Weight Weighted Total Points Possible Homework Multiplier MP Grade 1 Category Total Tests Category Average 85 1 Test 1 100 90 1 100 90 Test 2 100 70 1 100 70 Test 3 100 100 1 100 100 300 260 340 294 Category Total MP Total 86.6666 86.4705 Category Average Sum for each Category (Assignment Points Earned x Multiplier) / (Assignment Points Possible x Multiplier) = Category Average Homework (9x1) + (9x1) + (8x2) / (10x1) + (10x1) + (10x2) = Category Average 34 / 40 = 85 Category Average Tests (90x1) + (70x1) + (100x1) / (100x1) + (100x1) + (100x1) = Category Average 260 / 300 = 86.67 Category Average Revised: 02/05/2013 © 2013 Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, USA Page 2 SIS – Teacher Gradebook Calculations Quick Reference Marking Period Average Sum for ALL Categories Sum ALL Points Earned x Assignment Multiplier / Sum ALL Points Possible x Assignment Multiplier = MP Average multiplier (9x1)+(9x1)+(8x2) + (90x1)+(70x1)+(100x1) / (10x1)+(10x1)+(10x2) + (100x1)+(100x1)+(100x1) = MP Homework Points Earned 34 Test Points Earned Homework Points Possible 260 Test Points Possible 40 294 300 340 294 / 340 = 86.47 MP Average Revised: 02/05/2013 © 2013 Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, USA Page 3 SIS – Teacher Gradebook Calculations Quick Reference AVERAGING (CATEGORY WEIGHTS ARE UNEQUAL PERCENTAGES) In this example, the Averaging method is used for both categories, Homework and Tests. Category weights are not equal. (Homework is worth 30% of the MP grade and Tests are worth 70%.) The teacher has given extra weight to an assignment within the Homework category by assigning a Multiplier of 2 for Assignment 3. In this example, the Raw Score to Percentage method is used for both categories, Homework and Tests. Category weights are not equal. (Homework is worth 30% of the MP grade, and Tests are worth 70%.)
