GRADEBOOK GRADING METHODS
Categories are used to organize assignments and determine marking period grades.
The CSIU SIS Gradebook enables teachers to define how marking period grades are calculated for each
assignment category by specifying a value in the Grading Method field on the STAFF > STAFF
SCHEDULE VIEWS: GRADEBOOK MENU > SETUP screen. There are four calculations available: (1)
Averaging, (2) Summation Percentage, (3) Raw Score to Percentage, and (4) Summation. Click the Help
button
on the Gradebook Setup screen to view Grading Method definitions and examples.
Use Summation when all categories have an equal weight of 1 (for example, Homework-1, Tests-1, Final
Project-1). Use Averaging if the teacher wants to set up percentage category weights (such as
Homework-30%, Tests-50% and Final Project-20%). Use Raw Score to Percentage to calculate an
average of averages when category weights are unequal percentages.
NOTE: Teachers can use different Grading Methods for different categories, and then combine the grades
for each category in an overall marking period grade. If a mixture of Grading Methods is used, the
marking period average will be calculated as a straight average of all the category averages.
Example: A Gradebook might have two categories defined for a course, Homework and Tests. If
Homework is set up to use Summation and the student’s average in that category is 80%, and Tests are
set up to use Averaging and the student has an average of 100% in the Tests category, the marking
period grade will be 90% (80+100)/2.
NOTE: Teachers can give extra weight to a particular assignment within a category by increasing the
Multiplier for that individual assignment (on the Gradebook Setup screen). Notice the Multiplier of 2 for
Homework Assignment 3 in the spreadsheet below.
NOTE: If a category has a weight equal to 0, those grades will NOT be included in the marking period
average.

SUMMATION (CATEGORY WEIGHTS ALL EQUAL 1)
In this example, the Summation method is used for both categories, Homework and Tests. Category
weights are equal (both set to 1). The teacher has given extra weight to an assignment within the
Homework category by assigning a Multiplier of 2 for Homework Assignment 3. The student has earned
grades in Homework and Tests as follows:

AVERAGING (CATEGORY WEIGHTS ARE UNEQUAL

In this example, the Averaging method is used for both categories, Homework and Tests. Category
weights are not equal. (Homework is worth 30% of the MP grade and Tests are worth 70%.) The teacher
has given extra weight to an assignment within the Homework category by assigning a Multiplier of 2 for
Assignment 3. The student has earned grades in Homework and Tests as follows:

Marking Period Average
1. Multiply the Category average times the category weight for each category:
Homework Category Average x Homework Category Weight (30% or .30)
85 x .30 = 25.50
Tests Category Average x Tests Category Weight (70% or .70)
86.67 x .70 = 60.669
2. Sum all the values calculated in Step 1
25.50 + 60.669 = 86.17

This calculation is an average of the category averages. In this example, the Raw Score to Percentage
method is used for both categories, Homework and Tests. Category weights are not equal. (Homework is
worth 30% of the MP grade, and Tests are worth 70%.) The teacher has given extra weight to an
assignment within the Homework category by assigning a Multiplier of 2 for Assignment 3. The student

((9 / 10 = .90) x 100)) = 90 x 1 = 90
H2:
((9 / 10 = .90) x 100)) = 90 x 1 = 90

Multipliers
2. Add the Sum of the Assignments in Step 1
Homework
90 + 90 + 160 = 340
Tests
90 + 70 + 100 = 260
3. Divide the values in Step 2 by the sum of the assignment multipliers for each category.
Homework
(1+1+2=4 multiplier total)
340 / 4 = 85 Category Average
Tests
(1+1+1=3 multiplier total)
260 / 3 = 86.67 Category Average
Marking Period Average
1. Multiply the Category Average times the Category Weight for each category.
Homework Category Average x Homework Category Weight (30% or .30)
85 x .30 = 25.50
Tests Category Average x Tests Category Weight (70% or .70)
86.67 x .70 = 60.669
2. Add the sum for all the categories in Step 1
25.50 + 60.669 = 86.17 Marking Period Average
