Historic Vaulty Manor
Vaulty Manor, with its beautifully restored 17th century barn, is a perfect
venue for your special day. Set in a peaceful rural setting in the Essex
village of Goldhanger, it’s a location associated with royalty, colourful
characters and a history stretching back more than 800 years.

Something old, something new
Brandon had only a short stay. In the same year, he sold the manor to
Robert Trapps, a London goldsmith, whose family took a much longer
view and lived there for generations.
Gold has an interesting association with the manor and the local area.
Goldhanger has had several different spellings, but the name has always
started with ‘gold.’ One possible explanation is the link with the colour
of the corn marigold, which you can see growing in local farm fields.
Today, the area is better known for its ‘white gold’—sea salt harvested
from the nearby Blackwater estuary. In the past, Vaulty Manor has also
been known as Jehurs Farm and was recorded as part of a local salt works.
The manor changed hands several times after the Trapps family and
one of its more colourful characters was the Victorian author, Henry Coe
Coape. The son of a wealthy local merchant, he married a society heiress,
but was soon involved in a scandalous divorce. He divided his time
between London and the manor, but, at one point, had to flee the country
in bankruptcy, before returning to write novels to fund his lifestyle.
Despite its many changes of ownership, Vaulty Manor retains its special
tranquil old world character so you can truly celebrate your special day
with “something old, something new”.

In its early life, Vaulty Manor became the property of Beeleigh Abbey in
Maldon, donated in 1186 by Robert Mantel, Lord of Little Maldon and the
founder of the abbey. Fast forward some 450 years, and the dissolution
of the monasteries saw an end to Beeleigh’s ownership. Henry VIII claimed
monastic income and properties throughout the country and, in 1536,
he gave Vaulty Manor to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk.
