2003 Outlook
Head Coach Tony Rossi has done
his share of rebuilding in his
33 years at Siena. It’s doubtful,
however, that Rossi has ever had
this much work to do.
The Saints break camp this winter with an
entirely different look. Gone is the most productive class in the history of the program, and
with it, the most productive offensive player ever
to wear the Green and Gold, Ryan Finn. The
major leagues did their share of damage to the
Siena roster in the off-season as well, selecting
not only the senior battery of Dave Pahucki and
Jim Buckley, but also the strong arm of junior
fireballer Justin Knoff, leaving yet another
vacancy on the roster. Add to that the graduation of the entire outfield, which featured a
four-year starter in centerfield and one of only
two Saints in the modern era to finish a season
with a .400 batting average, and it would not be
an understatement to say that the coaching
staff has its work cut out for it. But ultimately,
Rossi and his staff know this is a time to look
forward not back, and the program always
seems to persevere.
With the departure of last year’s class
imminent, the Siena staff set out to bring in
quality student-athletes who could fill, if not
replace, the talent lost to graduation and the
draft. Mission accomplished.
While Rossi concedes that this year’s team
will be far different from what Capital Region
supporters and those close to MAAC baseball
have come to expect, he expects to field a quality
team that poses new challenges for the opposition.
“We have a very young and balanced team
with great speed,” the veteran mentor declared.
“Defensively, I expect improvement, and while
there will no doubt be a learning curve for our
younger players, the potential is there.”
With that said it is not surprising that
Rossi’s troops have set the same ambitious
expectations they do each spring. “The goal is to
capture the conference championship and earn
a return trip to the NCAA’s. We understand this
is never an easy goal to accomplish, and this
year in particular, we will need several players to
step up and take on more active roles. As always,
we will go as far as our pitching takes us.”
his first season working with the Siena pitchers.
Appearances, however, can be deceptive.
Junior Josh Copskey appears well-groomed
to step in and assume one of the top roles in
conference play. Copskey has been a weekend
starter since his arrival in Loudonville and has
emerged as one of the most reliable hurlers in
recent history at Siena. His workman like effort
coupled with precision control should speed along
his evolution as one of the MAAC’s elite arms.
Expectations are again high for fifth-year
senior Jeremy Cabot, who Rossi describes as the
most talented thrower on the staff. Cabot is a
fearless competitor with a powerful fastball and
an unhittable breaking pitch when at the top of
his game. If he is healthy, he will shore up one
of the top Saturday tandems in the MAAC.
The third conference spot is anybody’s guess,
though the staff is excited with the potential of
junior college transfer Ryan Bitter. Bitter, who
made the country-crossing trip from his home
in Pacific Grove, Calif. to arrive in Loudonville,
comes from a solid junior college background in
San Diego. His arsenal includes upper-80’s
velocity and a deadly slider as an out pitch.
Sophomore Josh Burnett is another potential difference maker this spring. Burnett flashed
signs of brilliance in limited duty last spring,
picking up his first college victory in a complete
game shutout of Vermont. The local product
has the savvy to develop into a quality option
this season.
A trio of freshmen will also compete for
quality innings and attempt to echo the tradition established by the great pitchers who have
come through the program the past decade.
Dan Weingart possesses perhaps the most
upside after a standout career at Long Island’s
Division High School in Levittown. Weingart
blends in a knuckle curve with his healthy fastball to keep hitters off balance. With improved
consistency, he figures to compete for weekend
time. John Lannan had the best fall of the
three, making the quickest acclimation to the
college game. The southpaw’s strength is his
pinpoint control, though he does own a sneaky
fastball and deceptive curve. If Lannan doesn’t
crack the conference rotation, he will almost
certainly see innings as a situational reliever
with the game on the line should he continue
PITCHING
A unit that has carried the Saints in the past,
and always seems rich in depth, is an enigma at
the outset. Questions arise in leadership, as well
as proven game experience, with just one weekend starter returning. Add a season-ending
injury to one of the top returnees on the staff to
the shake up already caused by the departure of
last year’s graduates and draftees, and it would
appear Coach Cilento is in a no-win situation in
Jeremy Cabot

Siena College Baseball
his development. Nick Kieltyka is another
potential-laden rookie who could earn serious
innings from the get-go. Kieltyka is a strong,
confident hurler who puts in his time in the
weight room and is constantly looking to
improve his game.
The main experience in the pitching staff
resides in its diverse bullpen. Transfer Josh
Courage made an immediate impact last spring
as the team’s closer and figures to again see
time in that role when February rolls around.
Courage made 19 appearances last season,
earning five saves while leading the squad with
a 3.09 ERA. His unique delivery keeps hitters off
balance and his durability will enable Rossi to
call on him daily, or leave him in the game
longer than the traditional closer.
Senior Dale Szachewicz, who has terrorized
opponents with his vast arsenal since his arrival
at Siena, joins Courage as a top option in the pen.
Szachewicz is the definition of a situational lefty,
as he creatively changes arm angles and speed to
keep the MAAC’s top lefthanders off balance.
Junior Gary Tarantino is yet another option
from the left side for the Saints. In his third
year with the program, Tarantino figures to
draw the assignment of facing some of the top
non-conference teams in the region, while at
the same time add depth to the weekend rotation and bullpen. A tireless worker, Tarantino
will be a factor this spring if healthy.
Classmate Kevin Wells was
converted from an infielder in the off-season, as
the coaching staff wanted to take full advantage
of his lively arm. The raw tools are in place,
though one would expect this year to serve as
an opportunity for Wells to learn the position’s
intricacies.
Red-shirt freshman Jim Anderson could be
the biggest surprise on the staff. A virtual
unknown, Anderson missed most of last season,
but has the size and potential to be a dominant
lefty in the MAAC. Again, his emergence will
chiefly depend upon his health and acclimation to the college game.
If the aforementioned
arms progress the way the
staff feels they are capable
of, the pitching should come
around by mid-season.
However, more questions
arise with the other half
of the battery.
CATCHING
Senior Matt
Mueller will make the
transition back behind the
dish after seeing most of
his time at first base a year
ago. Offensively, Mueller
is certainly capable of
putting up big power
numbers and continuing the run production
received from the Saints’ backstops the past
few seasons. Defensively, it will be difficult
for any of Siena’s catchers to step in
and perform at the level 2002
Boston Red Sox draftee Jim
Buckley did a year ago.
Mueller, who also transferred
to Siena from junior college
in California prior to last
season, will be the top choice
at the outset. He will again be a
mainstay in the middle of
Rossi’s lineup.
Anticipating the approaching
need for a catcher, the staff
brought in a trio of freshman
backstops to apprentice Mueller
this season. Each will gain valuable experience their rookie season
and have the opportunity to compete for important innings.
Brian Schmotzer enjoyed a nice
fall offensively and his playing time
will be dictated by his adjustment to
the next level. Expectations are also
high for Eric Hildenbrand who figures
to compete for playing time despite
missing the fall season with an injury
sustained in high school. Jon Pasieka is
one of the only walk-ons kept this season
and if his preseason performance and
work ethic are any indication, he could
compete for playing time as well.
INFIELD
The most experienced and talented
segment of the Siena nine rests in its deep
infield. The Saints will be strong up the middle for the third consecutive fall as
juniors Blake Hanan and Kevin
Roberts return to man shortstop
and second base respectively.
Classmate Tony Cipolla tightens up
the offense at the hot corner as the
day one starter at third for the
third consecutive season.
Hanan refined his skills
in the prestigious Cape Cod
Collegiate Baseball League
this summer following an
improved sophomore
campaign at the plate. He
will again be counted on
for his reliable glove and
consistent arm defensively and
his quick bat and knack for getting
on base when the Saints bat. In their
third year together, Hanan and Roberts
team up to create the most efficient doubleplay tandem in school history.
Roberts will likely again find his name at
the top of Rossi’s ledger when the Florida sun
greets the Saints in mid-February.
Despite battling through a hand
injury all of last season, he racked up
All-Conference plaudits for the second
consecutive season. Roberts also erupted
at the plate in the MAAC Tournament collecting a team-high
five hits in Siena’s two games.
The team will look for that
efficiency on a consistent
basis now that the switchhitter is back to full health.
The most improved
member of the infield was
Cipolla who also earned AllMAAC honors following a
breakthrough season in which he
batted .326. Cipolla also evolved
into a reliable defensive presence
and a surprisingly powerful
run producer in 2002. Should
his development continue in
the spring, the Saints should
have little to worry about in
their infield.
Freshman Bill Lazio
figures to round out the
opening day quartet
at first base. Lazio is
one of the most
decorated of Rossi’s
recruits after a
Tony Cipolla
stellar high school
career at St.
Ignatius in Ohio.
His exceptional bat
control and developed baseball knowledge
should ease his adjustment to the college
game. The staff expects he will add a spark
to the Siena lineup on a consistent basis.
Mid-season transfer walk-on Steve Ballas
also is renowned for his bat and figures to add
depth at the corners.
There is little doubt that the infield will be a
strength this season, but questions again arise just
beyond the dirt in a completely revamped outfield.
OUTFIELD
If strength and power defined last season’s
outfield, speed and savvy are characteristics that
describe the youthful lot set to replace three of
the most consistent players in school history.
Not so, however, for red-shirt junior Shawn
Hampton, who could be moved to left field this
season to add that missing pop to the middle
of the Saints’ order. Regardless of where he
lands, Hampton’s bat is a must in the everyday
lineup. The left-handed power hitter gained
valuable experience sitting out last season per
NCAA regulations after an All-American junior
college career.
Freshman speedsters Matt Gidaly and Scott
King appear to have the edge in center and right
Matt Mueller
Siena College Baseball
3
respectively after eye-popping falls. Rossi had
little hesitation in suggesting their names in his
projected lineup and if their high school careers
are any indication, each will be difficult to get
out of the rotation for the next four years.
Gidaly is a hard working centerfielder who
will also add depth to the Siena pitching staff. He
is a strong, aggressive hitter whose speed will be
an asset when roaming oversized Siena Field or
on the basepaths. He brings a consistency rarely
found in freshmen to the pivotal centerfield post.
King is perhaps the most versatile player on
the team. His presence alone should make the
Saints better defensively in the outfield than they
have been in recent in years. Another aggressive
threat at the plate, the staff thinks highly enough
of King to pencil his name in the three-spot in
the projected lineup. He too has a tremendous
arm that could be refined to add pitching depth
down the road; however, his chief attributes
reside in what he brings to the table offensively.
Proven experience does exist in the
form of senior Chris DelVecchio and junior
Brent Kunkle. DelVecchio is a consistent
defensive presence who can play all three outfield positions. He has an above-average arm
and a streaky bat that will provide Rossi options
if he chooses to offset the lineup. Kunkle played
in 35 games as a freshman before missing
all of last year with a back injury. If healthy,
he will likely see time as a defensive replacement
or a spot starter. Sophomore Chris Mahoney
begins his second season with the Green and
Gold after gaining valuable experience last
year. His work ethic paired with his year of
experience provides even more depth to Siena’s
young outfield.
Sophomore Luis Khoury enjoyed an allconference season as Siena’s designated hitter
as a freshman and he rounds out this year’s
list of positional players. After bulking up with
an increased commitment to the weight room
in the off-season, Khoury appears poised to
add power to what already was a consistent
bat this year. Khoury started 53 games against
quality college pitching a year ago and earned
Second Team All-MAAC honors—his bat will be
difficult to displace from the lineup.
SCHEDULE
Entering his 34th season, Head Coach Tony
Rossi has this part of the game figured out. Once
more, the Saints will embark on a schedule that
will rival those of the nation’s elite schools.
When all is said and done, 36 of the team’s first
48 games (including the initial 21 contests of
the season) will be played on the road.
This year’s Florida trips include renewed
acquaintances with perennial powers Florida
and Florida State as well as a weekend set with
Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton to start the season,
and a three-game set with South Florida in
Tampa three weeks later. The winter ‘tune-up’
begins with a series at highly regarded Florida
International and concludes with three games in
Shreveport, La. against Centenary on March 14.
The method to this perceived madness?
Simple. Rossi is high on the notion (and one
can’t argue with the success) that playing the
best prepares you to play your best. In turn, the
Saints always seem prepared and never overwhelmed by conference opposition once MAAC
play starts.
Conference play brings forth its own set of
challenges as the Saints look to return to the
Championships in Fishkill for the seventh time
in school history. Among others, Siena will be
attempting to dethrone rival Marist, which has
captured the last three Tournaments, and consequent NCAA berths, in its backyard.
Regional powers accent the remainder of
the non-conference Northeast-based slate,
which figures to amount to an NCAA-maximum
56 games when the season concludes.
All this plays perfectly into Rossi’s method.
It is particularly important this season to get his
team as much experience as possible in a
short time period.
The underdog
role is not one often
associated with the
storied Siena baseball
program, but this year
it may be welcomed.
If players who are
currently unknowns
can offset perceived
weaknesses, this
team may surprise
some people. In turn,
it might not be that
surprising to see
this team return
Siena to its championship form.

For the 34th consecutive season, Tony Rossi will call the shots
for the Siena baseball program. Rossi enters this season after
joining the illustrious 500-win club last year. He is the all-time
winningest coach in school history in any sport. Rossi also has the
longest tenure of any coach in Siena history and of any current
coach in the MAAC. He has defined the Siena Baseball Program
over the years, building the program from a Division II team with
10 players to a championship Division I program with 25 scholarship student-athletes. Over his 33 years, he has coached 30 players
who have gone on to sign professional contracts and two players
who have reached the highest level (Gary Holle ’71 and Tim
Christman ’01). With the addition of baseball scholarships Rossi
has been able to recruit against the top programs in the country.
Skip (as he is affectionately known) spends a good deal of his time recruiting, organizing and
fundraising, so the program can continue to grow and remain successful. For the past six years,
he has served as assistant athletic director, allowing him to be on campus full-time.
Since entry in to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference prior to the 1990 season, Rossi has lead
the Saints to a 155-112 record in the conference. Over the past 12 seasons, he has been awarded MAAC
Coach of the Year five times (1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, and most
recently 2001). Rossi has also coached four MAAC Rookies of the
Year and four MAAC Players of the Year. Over this time, Siena has
captured four MAAC Regular season titles and four MAAC
Tournament championships.
Prior to 1999 there was only one more step for the Siena
Baseball Program to take: qualifying for the NCAA Division I
Baseball Tournament. That feat was accomplished by the 1999
Saints, who went a remarkable 21-5 in the MAAC, and swept
through the MAAC Tournament outscoring their opponents by a
combined score of 35-7.
Last season, a sweep of conferencerival Rider gave Rossi his 500th career
win. In the offseason, the New York
Professional Baseball Hot Stove
League honored Rossi as their 2002
New York State Coach of the Year. The
“Ralph DiLullo” Coach of the Year award
is voted on by baseball scouts from around
the Northeast.

career that included six Section II championships and
two State Class CC titles. During that span, the
Cannoneers held a 234-78 overall mark.

B.S. in Physical Education. At Cortland, he played three
years of varsity baseball as the Red Dragons’ catcher.
Curro went on to earn a M.S. in Health Education from

Todd Donovan
YEAR AT SIENA: 1st
ALMA MATER: Siena
Todd Donovan begins his first season
on the Siena staff in the newly formed
administrative assistant position.
Donovan enjoyed a stellar career
with the Saints before being drafted in
the eighth round of the 1999 Major
League Draft by the San Diego Padres
following his junior season.
A career .327 hitter at Siena,
Donovan finished just two stolen bases shy of the school’s career mark
despite playing just three seasons. His final year with the Green and Gold
was most memorable, as he led the Saints to the MAAC Championship
and the program’s initial NCAA Tournament appearance.
He has since progressed steadily throughout the minor league ranks
and remained on the Padres’ 40-man roster all of last season. He plans on
returning to the organization when Spring Training commences this
March. Until then, he will assist the staff with various office tasks.

This is Siena
Siena College is a community of 2,700 men and
women offering degrees in Liberal Arts, Business,
and Science. Founded in 1937, Siena is a coeducational, independent, liberal arts college with
a Franciscan and Catholic tradition. Studentfocused professors are at the heart of a supportive learning community that prepares students
for careers, an active role in their community,
and for the real world.
An independent Board of Trustees governs the
College. An active Board of Associate Trustees
serves to strengthen the relationship between the
campus and the surrounding community.
Recognizing that its students come from varied
racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, Siena
College supports the creation of a multi-cultured
environment for all of its students.
The internal growth and development of
Siena has been continuous. In response to the
changing needs of the times, the Siena curriculum
allows flexibility and individual choice for all
undergraduates.
The Secret of Siena’s Success
What keeps Siena College among “America’s
Best?” Since it’s founding, Siena has been a
community where care and concern for the
intellectual, personal and social growth of all
students is paramount.
The overwhelming sense of community spirit
at Siena grabs your attention the moment you
arrive on campus. It is a place
where your friends are your
neighbors, your professors are
your friends, and just about
everyone calls you by your name.
The one on one interaction in the
classroom and personal attention
to each individual is why students
call Siena “home.”
Academics
Siena believes that a liberal arts
education provides our graduates
with the necessary skills to
succeed. Students can choose among 24 majors
in liberal arts, science and business. All majors
require coursework in English, history, philosophy, religious studies, fine arts, the social
sciences and natural science as part of Siena’s
core curriculum.
Siena also offers more than a dozen cooperative and special programs to suit a variety of professional interests. The Siena/Albany Medical
College Program features a medical education
with a distinct ethical dimension, the first of its
kind in America. Certificate programs are also
available in Theatre, Peace and International
Studies, Foreign Languages, and Business. All
certificate programs offer students a concentration
of experience that enhances their majors and
increases their career options. Other popular
choices include Study Abroad, the Siena in

Shortly after he completed the one-year
internship in January of 2000, Livizey was
appointed as the head strength and conditioning coach for the St. Petersburg Devil Rays—
Tampa Bay’s Single-A minor league franchise.
In that capacity, he oversaw all conditioning

The Department of Athletics and Recreation is an
integral part of the entire Siena College educational
experience. The purpose of athletics and recreation
at Siena is to assist students in obtaining a wellrounded education consistent with the College’s
liberal arts, philosophy and Franciscan tradition.
As the College provides programs and courses of
study rich in cultural experiences and strong in
assuring the means of living humanly, reflectively,
and productively in a technological world, Siena
College attempts to develop the student-athlete’s
“full potential as a self-aware individual of sound
mind, body and character.”
In keeping with this proviso, the Department of
Athletics and Recreation supports fair play, the
concept of amateur athletics, and cultivates the
qualities of leadership, teamwork and a sense of
community. The Department of Athletics and
Recreation is committed to the belief that all athletic
administrators, coaches, support staff and studentathletes should strive for excellence within the
educational and social environment of the college
and the departments value statements.
Value Statements
• To respect the personal worth of each student and
nurture the diversity that exists in the campus
community and beyond.
• To recognize that no responsibility exceeds the
mission of educating and graduating the studentathletes.
• To be committed to sportsmanship and fair play
by developing an environment through healthy
competition that creates respect for opponents
and all others attached to the competition.
• To mirror the academic challenge given our
student-athletes by offering an equally challenging
athletic experience at the NCAA Division I level.
• To offer intramural and recreational opportunities
to all students at a level consistent with their
interest and ability.
• To ensure that varsity student-athletes are integrated to campus life.
• To use the Marcelle Athletic Complex and its
recreational components to promote interaction
between students, faculty, and staff.
• To acknowledge safety and health as key components of successful varsity and intramural
programs.
• To recognize the importance of providing equitable opportunities for men and women.
• To nurture the integral role that athletics plays
in providing unity, high morale, and spirit
among students, employees, alumni, and friends.
• To promote the values of honesty, commitment,
hard work and dedication.
• To recognize that excellence in varsity athletics
leads to regional and national visibility for the
college.

2002 in Review
One way to describe the 2002
season for the Siena baseball
team is geographically. The Saints
were 1-14 below the Mason-Dixon
Line, but rebounded with a 27-15
record in the friendly confines of
the Northeast.
A second way is a season of streaks. A 1-14 start,
followed by a 27-13 run, capped off by a disappointing 0-2 showing at the MAAC Tournament.
With seven of eight starters and all but two
pitchers from the 2001 team returning, the Saints
entered the 2002 campaign with warranted
optimism. The team did realize it would not be
easy to capture the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference and earn another NCAA appearance.
The MAAC coaches picked the Saints to finish
third behind defending Champion Marist and
LeMoyne, as did Baseball America. And when all
was said and done, the prognosticators would be
right on. Seniors Ryan Finn and catcher Jim
Buckley joined sophomore second baseman Kevin
Roberts on the preseason All-Conference team.
A Siena trademark, arguably the toughest
non-conference schedule in the Northeast, was
the first focal point for the 2002 Saints. The
early season had the Saints facing top ranked
Florida State, #7 Florida, perennial national
powers Central Florida and Stetson, as well as
up-and-coming Elon University. Dates with
UNC-Wilmington, Penn State and
Temple rounded out the Saints’
southern swing.
The season got off to a rocky
start as the Saints dropped a threegame series to the Seahawks of
UNC-Wilmington. The bright spot
for Rossi’s squad was the hitting
performance of Finn, who
began his farewell tour by
belting two home runs in
the series. Next up was
a trip to the Sunshine
State where games
with the top team
in the land, Florida
State, and in-state
rival Florida awaited.
After a loss to the
Seminoles and two
defeats at the hands
of the Gators, the
Saints rallied to show
the baseball world their
potential. Behind Dave
Pahucki’s brilliant pitching performance, Siena
entered the bottom of the
ninth inning ahead of #1
Florida State 4-2.
Unfortunately, the lead did not hold up,
and FSU rallied for a 5-4 triumph in 10
innings. By far the most encouraging
performance of the season, quickly gave
way to more tough times.
Simply put, the Saints dropped their
next five to southern schools already in
mid-season form before knocking off
Atlantic 10 member Temple in Orlando
for their first win of the season. The
next weekend the Saints dropped a pair
to nationally ranked Elon.
After the losses at Elon, Siena moved
into the “northern phase” of the 2002
season. It began its return trip with a
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
weekend series at Manhattan. Pahucki
started the conference opener, and
responded with a three-hit, 10-strikeout
shutout against the Jaspers. The Saints
wound up taking two of three from
Manhattan to start MAAC play 2-1, but
the team wasn’t out of the woods yet.
Arguably the lowest point of the season
arrived the following weekend, as rival
Iona swept Siena. This put the Saints
near the bottom of the conference in
the early going and at a crossroads.
Holy Cross came to Loudonville with
the Saints reeling with a 3-18 record. A
victory was surely needed. And what a
dramatic victory it turned out to be.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth
inning, Finn hit a walk-off grand
slam to win the game. Would this
be the impetus to turn the season around?
Next on the schedule was Dartmouth, and
the Saints again rallied for a split of the
weekday doubleheader.
Perennial MAAC contender
Rider was next for the Saints in a
crucial three-game conference
set. In the first game, junior
righthander Justin Knoff
flirted with a no hitter. He
carried it into the eighth
inning and ended up
winning the game allowing just two hits. If that
wasn’t exciting enough, in
the second game sophomore
second baseman Kevin
Roberts scored the winning
run in the bottom of the last
inning on a wild pitch. The
two victories evened the Saints’
conference record, and gave Coach
Tony Rossi his 500th career victory.
The third and final game of the series
was an old-fashioned pitchers
duel, with Siena freshman Ken Grant striking
out 15 in a 2-1 heartbreaking loss. Siena led 1-0
going into the top of the ninth but could not
hold on to the lead.
Two more wins mid-week (Quinnipiac and
Fordham) propelled the Saints to a weekend
sweep of MAAC rival Niagara. During this time,
senior Josh Kean reached base nine consecutive
times, and at one point was a robust 12-for-14
at the plate. For his efforts, Kean was selected
MAAC Player of the Week.
A mid-week split with Vermont preceded a
three-game conference sweep of Fairfield.
Meaning, after the Fairfield sweep, the Saints
had put together a run of 13 victories in 16
games. Could they get any hotter?
The answer was yes. Siena swept a double
header from C.W. Post, then split with New York
Tech before a two game conference sweep of
Saint Peter’s. The third game was rained out.
Siena was now 12-5 in the MAAC and in the
middle of a run in which they would win
17-of-21 games.
A split of a weekday double header with
Cornell led into another three-game MAAC

sweep, this time at Western New York foe,
Canisius. Finn became the first player since the
Saints became Division I in 1977 to hit for the
cycle in the first game. The Saints were now 15-5
in the Conference, and poised to challenge for their
second consecutive MAAC regular-season title.
In the last non-conference game of the year
Siena traveled to Amherst and trounced their
third Atlantic 10 opponent, Massachusetts,
12-4. Siena, winners of 23 of its last 28, were
ready to travel to Poughkeepsie to take on
Conference-leader Marist. In the meantime,
freshman Luis Khoury won his second straight
MAAC Rookie of the Week award.
The battle between the top two teams in
the conference, resulted in a Marist sweep. The
Red Foxes won a pair of well played one-run
games on Saturday and took the finalé 10-2,
ending Siena’s hopes of capturing the top seed
in the Tournament.
The Saints entered the final weekend of
MAAC play knowing they had to win two games
to be assured of another trip to the Conference
Championships. That would not be an easy task
as Siena had to face second place LeMoyne. The
Saints erased all doubt as they won both games
on the first day to solidify their trip to Dutchess
Stadium and the MAAC Tournament. A 2-1
loss on the final day of the regular season did
Ryan Finn finished his remarkable career with over
half of the program’s all-time records.
little to dampen the enthusiasm of the Saints.
The team made the transition from a 2-14
start to finish the regular season at 28-27.
To say the Tournament was a disappointment would be an understatement. Siena
played well, but lost its first two games, both
by one run. In both contests the Saints had
the tying, or winning run, in scoring position
when the final out was made.
The 2002 season was highlighted by Rossi’s
500th win as well as many outstanding individual performances. Ryan Finn, Kevin Roberts
and Jim Buckley were named First Team AllMAAC. Tony Cipolla, Josh Kean, and Louis
Khoury were named to the All-MAAC second
team. Four Saints, Dave Pahucki, Brent
Wengert, Justin Knoff and Gary Tarantino
were awarded MAAC All-Academic honors.
Ken Grant was named an Honorable Mentioned
Freshman All-American. The Siena record book
needed to be rewritten following the team's
offensive achievements, and the career marks of
the outgoing seniors.
The 2002 season also saw three Saints get
selected in the Major League Free Agent Draft.
The Boston Red Sox selected the senior battery
of Pahucki and Buckley in the 23rd and 25th
rounds respectively. The Cincinnati Reds chose
Junior Justin Knoff in the 30th round.

Saints in Professional Baseball
In recent years, the Siena baseball program has become one of the top breeding grounds for professional baseball prospects in the Northeast. Since 1996,
nine Saints have been drafted in Major League Baseball’s first year players draft. Just last June, three more Siena players joined the professional ranks.
Dave Pahucki and Jim Buckley, both seniors, were chosen by the Boston Red Sox in the 23rd and 25th rounds respectively, while Justin Knoff, a junior,
was picked in the 30th round by the Cincinnati Reds. Of the three, Pahucki enjoyed the best rookie season, garnering Boston Red Sox Single-A Pitcher of
the Year honors following a summer in which he was promoted from Lowell of the New York Penn League to Augusta. In total 32 Siena players have gone on
to sign professional baseball contracts. Todd Donovan (San Diego Padres) and Tim Christman (Chicago Cubs) are still playing high-level minor league ball.

Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound
principles of quality and integrity in academics and
excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference enters its 22nd year of competition during
the 2002-2003 Academic Year.
The MAAC was founded in 1980 by six charter
members; the U.S. Military Academy, Fairfield
University, Fordham University, Iona College,
Manhattan College and Saint Peter’s College.
Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981
with members competing in the sports of men’s cross
country and men’s soccer. On January 2, 1982, Army
traveled to Iona for the first MAAC men’s basketball
game and the MAAC story had begun.
Today, Conference members include: Canisius
College, Fairfield University, Iona College, Loyola College
(MD), Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara
University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s College, and
Siena College. In addition, associate members Duquesne
University, LaSalle University and St. John’s University
compete in football. LeMoyne College competes in
baseball and women’s lacrosse, while Providence
College, St. Joseph’s University and Wagner College
compete in men’s lacrosse. The MAAC Ice Hockey
League associate members consist of American
International College, Bentley College, University of
Connecticut, College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst
College, Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University
and the U.S. Military Academy. St. Francis (NY) College,
Villanova University and Wagner College are all associate members of the MAAC Women’s Water Polo League.
The MAAC will support 26 sports and conduct 25
championships during the 2002-2003 academic year.
Men’s and women’s basketball, football and ice
hockey garner much of the media attention as the
country continues its frenzied love affair with these
sports. MAAC basketball will have a wealth of exposure
this year, thanks in large part to the MAAC’s marketing
firm, Host Communications, Inc. In July 2001 the
league signed a three-year renewal agreement with
Madison Square Garden Network, which will televise
nearly 21 games, including nine contests during the
2002 HSBC MAAC Basketball Tournament. On the
national stage, ESPN will broadcast the men’s championship game through the year 2002.
The 2003 MAAC Basketball Tournament will be
held at Trenton’s Sovereign Bank Arena, with Buffalo’s
HSBC Arena preparing to host the 2004 championship.
By having an excellent working relationship with
these working facilities as well as Albany’s Pepsi Arena,
the MAAC has been able to attract a number of NCAA
Championship events. In 1995, the MAAC and Siena
hosted the highly successful First and Second Rounds
of the Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In
2000, the MAAC, along with Canisius and Niagara,
again received rave reviews as they hosted the First and
Second Rounds of the NCAA Basketball Tournament
at the HSBC Arena. The MAAC, Rider and Siena cohosted the 2002 Division I Wrestling Championships
at the Pepsi Arena. This year, the MAAC and Siena
will serve as hosts for the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s
Basketball East Regional at the Pepsi Arena, while the
MAAC, Canisius and Niagara will again host the First
and Second Rounds of the NCAA Basketball Tournament at the HSBC Arena in 2004. Additionally in
2003, the MAAC, Canisius and Niagara will also serve
as hosts for the 2003 Division I Men’s Ice Hockey
Championship, also at the HSBC Arena.

MAAC Associate Sports
In January of 1993, the conference announced the
formation of the MAAC Football League, which began
play in September 1993. The league, which is part of
the NCAA Division I-AA classification, consists of the
six football-playing MAAC schools – Canisius, Fairfield,
Iona, Marist, Saint Peter’s and Siena – and three
associate members Duquesne, La Salle and St. John’s.
The MAAC Football League is a Division I-AA league,
which keeps costs to a minimum through a series of
innovative conference rules involving travel squad size,
length of the practice season, and a limited number of
full-time coaches. Most importantly, however, there are
no athletic scholarships, just need-based financial aid.
In June of 1995, the MAAC continued to develop
opportunities for student-athletes as the conference
announced the formation of the MAAC Men’s and
Women’s Lacrosse Leagues. The men’s league began
competition in the spring of 1996 while the women’s
league commenced in the spring of 1997. The men’s
league consists of four MAAC schools – Canisius,
Manhattan, Marist, Siena – and four associate members
– Mount St. Mary’s, Providence, St. Joseph’s University
(PA) and Wagner. The women’s league consists of
MAAC institutions Canisius, Fairfield, Manhattan,
Marist, Niagara and Siena, plus LeMoyne College.
In September of 1997, the MAAC continued its
mission of providing student-athletes with opportunity
by forming the MAAC Ice Hockey League, which began
play during the 1998-99 season. The league, one of
six conferences in NCAA Division I, consists of three
full-time members – Canisius, Fairfield and Iona – and
eight associate members – American International
College, Bentley College, University of Connecticut,
College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst College,
Quinnipiac University, Sacred Heart University and
the U.S. Military Academy. The MAAC Hockey League
success story was perpetuated last summer as the
League was awarded an automatic berth to the
NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Championship.
In 2002, the MAAC added the MAAC Women’s
Water Polo League, making it the 26th sport that the
conference sponsors. The league is made up of three
MAAC schools – Iona, Marist and Siena – as well as
three associate members, St. Francis (NY) College,
Villanova University and Wagner College.
Academics and Athletics
The MAAC prides itself on the accomplishments of its
student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the
field. Three members of the league, Fairfield, Marist
and Siena, posted 100% graduation rates for its studentathletes according to the 1996 survey by the NCAA.
Additionally, many top scholar-athletes from the conference have been recognized in the GTE Academic
All-America program, including three of the 10 First
Team selections in basketball in 1992-93, as well as
gaining numerous other scholarship awards. Mary
Beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first
recipient of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. In
the fall of 1998, Erin Whalen, a member of the Iona
women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s
32 Rhodes Scholarships for academic achievement
and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a Loyola student,
was also awarded a Rhodes Scholarship.
First-class facilities are the rule with MAAC schools,
as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas, such as
Madison Square Garden, the Continental Airlines

Arena, HSBC Arena, Pepsi Arena and Sovereign Bank
Arena. The other MAAC championships boast their
share of outstanding locales as well, such as Dutchess
Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y., home of the baseball tournament, and the fabled Van Cortlandt Park in the
Bronx, where the cross-country championships are
contested. This year, the MAAC will take its Volleyball
as well as Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships to
Orlando, Florida, where it will conduct its postseason
championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports
Complex. Future MAAC Championships at Walt
Disney World include men’s soccer in 2003 and
men’s and women’s cross country in 2004.
In the past several years several of the MAAC
schools have also enjoyed success in NCAA Tournaments. Rated highly on the national level, the league
sent two representatives, Fairfield and Siena, to the
2001 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. MAAC
schools have made a total of 63 NIT appearances
and 29 NCAA appearances.
Combined with recent bracket expansion in several
sports, the MAAC possesses 12 automatic bids in men’s
and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball,
men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and
women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer and ice hockey.
In 2000, the Iona College men’s cross country team
finished 15th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In 1995, the Siena women’s volleyball team
became the first team to represent the MAAC in the
NCAA Volleyball Tournament, an achievement
duplicated by Fairfield in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000
and 2001 as the Stags gained spots with an automatic
bid. Canisius softball, Manhattan track, Marist baseball
and Loyola soccer and lacrosse have also flourished
on the national stage.
The MAAC has also been a leader in the forefront
of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league
into cyberspace. This year, the league retained Host
Communications to sponsor the MAAC web page.
Launched in November 1999, www.maacsports.com
has been a great success, providing fans with up to
date contest results, online chat sessions, fan polls
and an online merchandise store.
The MAAC President for the 2002-2003 academic
year is Dr. Dennis J. Murray, the President of Marist
College. The Vice-President is Dr. Bart Luedeke, the
President of Rider University. Curt Blake, Director of
Athletics at Rider University, will chair the Committee
on Athletic Administration and Joyce Eggleston,
Assistant Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Siena College will serve as Vice Chair.

Through the Years
Tony Rossi led the Siena
Indians from 1970-1989...
Until the school
adopted the nickname
“Saints” to start the ’90s...
And in 2001-2002, the Saints
enjoy a new logo as part of a new
identity program at Siena.
Tony Rossi has reached the NCAA
Tournament at the Division II
and Division I levels in his 33 years
at the helm.

* NCAA minimums require minimum of two seasons

average statistics
The Saints will have a difficult time filling the void
left by the graduation of outfielder Ryan Finn.
In his four years with the Saints, Finn broke nearly every offensive school career record.
Most notable were is 47 career homeruns—a number that nearly doubled the old school
mark of 25. The 192 runs he drove in during the course of his career place him over 50 RBI
in front of the next closest player in that category as well. Other career marks he smashed
include: base hits, runs scored, doubles, triples, total bases, extra base hits, games played,
plate appearances and at bats—in all, 11 of the 12 major offensive career marks belong
to him. His career batting average was .340, placing him third all-time in that category.
He tallied 62 multi-hit games and 49 multi-RBI games in his career. Classmate Jim Buckley
finished second on the school charts in many of the aforementioned categories including
homeruns and RBI—he ended his career third in total hits. Buckley finished his career with
a .298 average—narrowly missing out on this prestigious list.

Siena Baseball:
An Established Program on the Rise
Over the last decade, the Siena baseball program has established a record of success
unequalled by most schools in the Northeast. From the hotly contested battles the
program annually has with the nation’s top teams on its Southern trip, to the four
MAAC Tournament and regular-season championships since 1995, the reputation
of the program far extends the Loudonville campus. With this in mind, the College
made a commitment to the program five years ago to assure baseball at Siena
would continue to grow. First and foremost, Coach Rossi was hired on a full-time
basis, so he would always be on hand to oversee the program’s development. Next,
the institution agreed to increase the scholarship dollars the program could offer
recruits over a five year plan until Siena was at the NCAA maximum of 11.7 full
scholarships. This past year, the final phase of the project was set in motion: to
enhance the program’s facilities to a level consistent or superior with schools in
the region. Through the support of philanthropic donations, many made by alumni
of the program, an addition to the Marcelle Athletic Complex was constructed to
house four “team rooms”—one of which was set aside for baseball. The expansion
also includes a 50-seat theater for reviewing films, and the baseball room features
a newly appointed surround sound system and big screen TV. This fall, a new infield
was resurrected, complementing the scenic positioning of Siena Field as the majestic
centerpiece of the Siena campus.

Siena College Baseball
Siena Athletics
They started out as the Golden
Warriors. That proved too
long for headlines, so soon
Siena became the Indians.
In the late 1980s, they
became the Saints.
There was a time, not long
ago, when the majority of Siena’s studentathletes hailed from homes in the Capital
Region, and athletic teams’ scheduling
requirements could be met by jumping
in a van and travelling to Saratoga,
Troy, Schenectady and Albany.
In 1976, however, Siena’s athletics
program was elevated to NCAA Division I
status. With that move, the College committed itself to upgrading its program
and making all teams competitive.
After stops in the ECAC Metro and
North Atlantic Conference, Siena
moved to the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference (MAAC), where it has made
its mark.
Since moving to full Division I status,
Siena Athletics have continued to grow. Last
year, the program added women’s water polo,
giving it eight men’s programs and 11 on the
women’s side.
The Program
Siena sponsors 19 sports that compete at
the NCAA Division I level. Eighteen Saints’
sports teams compete in the MAAC, with field
hockey playing in the Northeast
Conference.
The Saints pride themselves
on excellence on and off the
field. This past year, the studentathletes at Siena averaged an
astounding 2.9 GPA – a mark far
higher than the average of the regular student body. In 2001-2002,
a record 60 student-athletes were
placed on the MAAC honor roll. Siena
has ranked in the top-10 for national
graduation rates the past two years.
On the field, the Siena baseball
team has won four of the last eight
MAAC Championships and advanced to the
1999 NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Tony
Rossi, entering his 34th year at the helm of
the Saints, has continually developed studentathletes who have performed both on the
field, and off. This past season he won his
500th game.
The men’s basketball team has also carried
the torch for Siena in the MAAC. Last
season, the Saints caught the nation’s
attention with an improbable leap
into college basketball’s biggest stage
– the NCAA Tournament. The Green
and Gold continued its
improbable run with
a nationally televised
opening round victory over
Alcorn State before falling to
eventual national champion Maryland
before 20,000 fans at the MCI Center in
Washington. It was the team’s third postseason
Tournament appearance in the past four years
and its third trip to the “Big Dance.”
Under the direction of Gina Castelli, the
women’s basketball team has grown into one
of the top programs in the region. The Saints
reached the postseason for the second consecutive year this past season after cruising to
their second straight MAAC regular-season
crown. Junior Gunta Basko repeated as the
conference’s Player of the Year and was
selected as a finalist for Kodak All-American
consideration as Siena received its second
invite to the Postseason Women’s National
Invitation Tournament. In 2000-2001, the
team earned its first MAAC Tournament
championship and initial NCAA berth.
The men’s and women’s
soccer programs have experienced recent success and growth
as well. Men’s coach Charlie Curto,
in his 19th season at the helm, guided the Saints back to the MAAC
Tournament last season. Women’s
Head Coach Steve Karbowski was
recognized as the Northeast region’s Co-Coach
of the Year after orchestrating the nation’s
eighth best turnaround last fall.
The volleyball team also continued its
winning ways, advancing to the conference
championships for the 10th straight season.
The team won four straight MAAC titles
from 1993-96 and reached the 1995
NCAA Tournament.
In just its fourth season, the women’s
swimming and diving team boasted the
conference’s most outstanding swimmer (Kelly
Pangburn) as well as its most outstanding
diver (Leah Serbalik). With both athletes
returning this season, the team appears
primed to improve upon its impressive
fourth place finish last year.
Sister act Kim and Michelle Milton
have guided the cross-country program’s
renaissance, as each captured all-MAAC
honors this past season. The sophomore
duo placed in the top-10 at the conference
championships held at Disney’s Wide
World of Sports Complex.
Women’s tennis star Nikki Mayer has
brought new attention to her sport after
crushing 12 school records her junior
season. Firmly established as one of the
top players in the region, Mayer and the
Saints will again compete for individual
and team accolades this season.
Junior linebacker Dan Smacchia has
brought a new enthusiasm to the gridiron.
In his first full season of college football,
he led the conference in tackles and was
named an honorable mention Division
I-AA All-American.
In all, last year, 39 Siena studentathletes earned All-Conference honors
(the most ever), while 57 (up from 15 in
1999) earned all-academic recognition.
Facilities
Most Siena teams make their
homes on campus, playing on
the seven grass fields located
behind the Marcelle Athletic
Complex.
Inside the
Marcelle Athletic
Complex, Siena
student-athletes
have all the amenities to ensure their
abilities to compete
at the Division I level. This season, many
of the student-athletes will enjoy the
benefits of a state-of-the-art expansion to
the field house. The expansion (scheduled
to be completed in the fall of
2002) features four new “team
rooms,” and a theater to
watch video. The men’s
and women’s locker
rooms have also been
restructured as part of
the project.
The women’s basketball
and volleyball teams play
their home contests at the
4,000-seat Alumni Recreation
Center.
Siena’s men’s basketball
team makes its home at the
Pepsi Arena in downtown
Albany. The Pepsi Arena is a regionally
acclaimed 15,500-seat facility. Since its
full-time move to the Pepsi Arena, both the
men’s and women’s basketball teams’
attendances have soared into the top-100
in the country.
The Siena football team plays its home
games at the 5,500-seat Heritage Park.
Academic Support
Siena also offers a full-time
academic advisor for its
student-athletes. The
academic advisor provides
assistance for studentathletes, assisting in class
scheduling and tutorial services.
This year an assistant advisor has
been hired to assist with the NCAA’s
Champs/Life Skills initiative.
A study lounge, located on the first
floor of the Marcelle Athletic Complex,
is available for all student-athletes.
Included in the study lounge are two
computers and a quiet area to study
and work during the academic
year as well as during summer
sessions. The technologically
advanced J. Spencer and
Patricia Standish library, which
opened in 2000, serves as a
scenic backdrop to the baseball
field and is a short walk from
any point on campus.
