Why is this important to UBC?
This project supports the work of the UBC Physical Activity Working Group, which is one aspect of the
emerging Wellbeing at UBC Strategy.
UBC is a Health Promoting University. As such, UBC transforms the health and sustainability of our
current and future societies, strengthens communities and contributes to the well-being of people,
places and the planet. One important aspect of wellbeing is to challenge sedentary behavior and
promote physical activity amongst students, staff, faculty and residents at the University. It is a
challenge, however, to encourage physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior in a diverse
population, particularly one that focuses on academic study, research and work: a culture in which it
often requires individuals to sit for a long periods of time.
Everyone can contribute!
Students from all academic backgrounds and all year levels are encouraged to participate. For the
10,000 Step Challenge, teams would also benefit from:



Student with a knowledge of physical activity and sedentary behavior, community-based social
marketing, engagement and outreach, population health, health promotion and prevention and
behaviour change
Student with experience in developing communications or outreach plans and communications
materials
Students with experience in planning or implementing physical activity programs
