CHAPTER 9 PREVIEW
A Look Back at Chapter 8
Chapter 9: The Jefferson Era
George Washington became the first president in 1789. He set
several precedents that other presidents followed, such as only
serving two terms.
He dealt with many problems, domestic and foreign. He wanted the
U.S. to stay out of wars by staying neutral (Neutrality Proclamation).
He also warned that political parties would divide the country, but
they developed anyway. The first parties were the Federalists, led by
Alexander Hamilton, and the Democratic-Republicans, led by
Thomas Jefferson.
John Adams became the second president but he only served one
term. He angered Americans with the Sedition Act which violated
Freedom of the Press.
When Thomas Jefferson won the election of 1800, he became the
third president of the U.S. His major accomplishment was the
Louisiana Purchase, a large piece of land that he bought from
France. It doubled the size of the U.S. Lewis and Clark led an
expedition to explore this vast unknown territory.
U.S. shipping faced problems from Britain and France. Jefferson tried
to avoid conflict with the Embargo Act but it was disastrous for
American business.
Under President James Madison, the U.S. declared war on Britain.
Although Britain burned the White House, the U.S. maintained its
independence from Britain. During the war Francis Scott Key wrote a
poem called the “Star-Spangled Banner”. It was later set to music
and became our national anthem.
