Scan, reduce and offset! Explanation offset buttons The buttons applied are average based. For example, to calculate the average CO₂ emissions of a terraced house or a small car in the Netherlands. In addition, we refer to an average family or average mileage. Outcomes are completed in tonnes CO₂ where numbers are rounded up from 0.5 and 0.4 or lower down. When using the buttons for transport and housing, the indirect CO₂ emissions, such as the production of your car or the construction of your house, are not taken into account. For the calculation of the CO₂ emissions we assumed three different weight classes: small cars, medium cars, large cars. The average annual kilometers of cars vary by weight class: - Small cars of less than 1,000 kilos drive 8242 km on average. This resulted in an average of 1,428.6 kg CO₂. And is rounded of to 1 tonne. - Medium sized cars, between 1,000 and 1,500 kilos drive 13,059 kilometers on average. This equals 2,611.8 pounds of CO₂. And is rounded of to 3 tonnes. - Large cars, from 1,500 kilos drive 16,721 kilometers on average. This equals 4,347.46 kg CO₂. And is rounded of to 4 tonnes. - Source: CBS Offset your flights To calculate the CO₂ emissions of a flight, we have assumed three different return flight distances: short return flights (800-6,000 kilometers), medium return flights (6000- 16,000 kilometers) and large return flights (more than 16,000 kilometers). Below you will find an overview of the different distances. Herein you can also find how much the average CO₂ emissions of these flights is. - Return Flight short: 800 to 6,000 km o destinations in Europe, North Africa, Turkey (average 0.5 tonnes of CO₂). (Note: minimum of 800 kilometers is apprehended because under this minimum tourists fly less often. Besides, there are many clean alternatives. Below this minimum it is inefficient and one produces more carbon per kilometer, on the other hand it produces less additional emissions) - Return Flight Medium: 6,000 tot 16,000 km o Destinations in North America, Central America, Central Africa, Central and Near East (average 2 tonnes of CO₂). - Return Flight large: more than 16,000 km Destinations Far East, Latin America, Australia and Oceania (average 3 tonnes of CO₂) Source: Milieu Centraal, 2012 Make your home climate neutral For the calculation of the CO₂ emissions of a house, we took 3 different types of housing: apartment, a terraced house and a detached house. The average gas consumption varies by type. The energy consumption is calculated by using the average of the three types together and equals 3500 kWh (2 tonnes of CO₂). - Apartment o Average gas consumption: 1016 m3 (1.8 tonnes CO₂) o Average energy use: 2250 kWh (1 tonnes) o Total: (1.8+1.0=) 2.8 tonnes CO₂, rounded of 3 tonnes - Teracced house o Average gas consumption: 1722 m3 (3.1 tonnes) o Average energy use: 3500 kWh (1.6 tonnes) o Total: (3.1 + 1.6=) 4.7 tonnes CO2, rounded of 5 tonnes - Detached house: o Average gas consumption: 2396 m3 (4.3 tonnes CO₂) o Average energy use: 4600 kWh (2.1 tonnes) o Total: (4.3 +2.1=) 6.4 tonnes CO₂, rounded of 6 tonnes Source: Nibud, Milieu Centraal FairClimateFund | Hamburgerstraat 28a - 3512 NS UTRECHT | (+31) 030 234 8210 CC 30256395 | Bank account 065.61.80.072 | IBAN NL28 0656 1800 72 | BIC INGBNL2A | VAT NL 8205.38.899-B01 www.FairClimateFund.nl | [email protected] Scan, reduce and offset! Shower Press this button and make the yearly use of the shower in your home climate neutral. The calculation is based on an average household (2.23 persons) and the average CO₂ emissions per person per year for the use of the shower (170 pounds per person). Therefore, the amount of CO₂ emissions of this buttons is 0.4 tonnes of CO₂ per household per year. Source: Milieu Centraal Laptop The calculation of the average CO₂ emissions of a laptop is based on the emissions during its whole lifespan. It is based on the total production (200 kilo CO₂) and energy consumption of the laptop (57 kWh/year. This is based on the average lifespan of a laptop of five years. The laptop button is: 1.5 tonne of CO₂ for the entire life of the laptop. Source: Milieu centraal Desktop computer The calculation of the average CO₂ emissions of a desktop computer and monitor is based on the emissions during its whole lifespan. It is based on the total production (510 kilo CO₂) and energy consumption of the computer (202 kWh/year). This is based on the average life of a desktop computer of six years. The amount of CO₂ emissions of this button is 1.07 tonnes of CO₂. Source: Milieu centraal Power The average energy consumption per household per year in the Netherlands is 3,500 kWh. One kWh is the equivalent of 0.46 kilo of CO₂. The following amount of CO₂ emissions is therefore applied to the button: 1.6 kg CO₂ per year, rounded of to 2 tonnes. Source: Milieu centraal Gas consumption The average gas consumption per household per year in the Netherlands is 1600 m3. One m3 of gas equals 1.78 pounds of CO₂. The following amount of CO₂ emissions is therefore applied to the buttonnes: 2.800 kg CO₂ per year, rounded of to 3 tonnes. Source: Milieu centraal Partner The average CO₂ emission per person in the Netherlands is about 5 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Dog A small dog emits about 1,830 kilos of CO₂. The production of dog food emits around 1,700 kilo CO₂ and the manure of the dog equals 130 kilo of CO₂. The amount of CO₂ emissions of this button therefore 1.8 tonnes of CO₂ per year, rounded of to 2 tonnes. Source: bild.de; utopia.de Cat A cat emits 1 tonne of CO₂, including cat food and the packaging thereof. The litter production emits another 1.2 tonnes of CO₂. The following amount of CO₂ emissions is therefore applied to the buttonnes Cat: 2.2 tonnes of CO₂, rounded of to 2 tonnes. Source: bild.de; utopia.de Aquarium Heating a tank with 500 liters of water during its lifespan emits about 900 kilo’s of CO₂. The amount of CO₂ emissions of this button is: 0.9 tonne of CO₂ rounded of to 1 tonne. Source: bild.de; utopia.de All numbers with Milieu Centraal listed as source are verified by Milieu Centraal.
