Whippoorwill Weekly - Whippoorwill Farm Day Camp

Nature News
Jokes

By: Justin R. • Log Cabin
This was caterpillar week at the Nature
Museum. Kids found and brought to the museum, two smooth green caterpillars, two with
black branched spines, and a thin inch worm.
We have put them into clear-sided containers to observe what develops -- butterflies or
moths?
A camper caught a nine inch Bass fish at
the pond with a bamboo pole, line and hook.
We have put it into our 100 gallon aquarium.
We still have the nine inch Slider turtle in the
aquarium, but we are planning to release him
into the Hunting Camp Creek that runs by
lower camp.
A camper found a soft, light tan, oval shaped egg at the edge of the creek. We are
waiting to see what emerges from this egg.
The kids continue to catch crawdads (crayfish), salamanders, and minnows. They are
fascinated to see them so close.
Walking the bridge from lower camp to upper camp is an adventure in Nature observations. We see many multi-colored dragonflies,
young turtles, and young fish in the swampy
area below. (decades ago, this area was called
“Peanut Butter Land)
The cacophony from the 13-year Cicadas
has diminished considerably. We look forward to 2024 when they will return again!?!
What happens when a vampire and a snowman come
together?
A: Frost Bite
The Magic Broom which goes to the
cleanest camp all week long belongs to
Bear Cubs
for session 2. Great job Bear Cubs
for keeping your camp clean two
weeks in a row!
What do you call a skeleton that does no work at all?
A: Lazy Bones
Crawdads
By: Caroline Johnson • Log Cabin
Have you heard of a crawdad before? Well if you
haven’t you should read this. Crawdads come in all
shapes and sizes. Some are blue and some are red and
brown. When they are babies they have one big claw
and one tiny claw. Thank you for reading this article.

Relay
By: Wesley M. • Log Cabin
By: Greta Matthies • Log Cabin
Lately at our farm we had a pig (Milo) give a
goat (Buddy) a ride on his shoulders. In second
period archeology, we found a raptor skull, crystal gemstone, shells and arrowheads. Come to
our farm we got everything so come here to our
farm in Fairview with bus stops at Jim Warren
Park. We have everything from a horse barn to a
creek, a nature center to a swimming pool all at
Whippoorwill. Come on Thursday and you get
a free s’more. Meet Nature John and do a tone
more. Only at Whippoorwill.
Once in Whippoorwill my group Togo were working really hard to win the relay. I was the last one
to run and when I did it, something struck me and it
said I should run better than I ever ran before and I
ran fast enough to win. I was so happy. Now we are
against Teepee!
Montana
By: GA • Log Cabin
Animal beading is a fun relaxing activity. You can
make all kinds of things: people, wizards, snakes, bees,
butterflies and other fun things. You can also go relax
and cool off if you just played battleball.
Montana is white with brown spots. He is
handsome. He is friends with Tinker the pony.
Tinker is funny. He is short, brownish, grayish.
He eats the ropes. Montana is fast. His horse
friend Misty loves Ace the biggest hose. Ace
loves Misty. Ace is brown. Misty is white with
small black spots. Lucky is brown, too. Lucky
is the second biggest horse. Jazzy is a pony too.
Jazzy is black. Hope you have fun at the horse
barn.

Yesterday, when I was waiting in line for the zipline,
I saw a guy do a dive off the zipline. It was the first
dive off the zipline in Whippoorwill history. It was
truly amazing!
Session 2: June 6 - 10, 2011
Team Australia huddle up before the relay. Go Aussies!

We have a pet snake at Bear Cubs. It is REAL

nice. This snake loves Bear Cubs so much!! He
feels and looks just like a real snake. He watches us do our activities during the day!

“Hey! Smell my arm. It smells like man!”
- Archer M. • Log Cabin
One day, Abby and I were
walking by the lake and then
Abby accidently slipped on
my foot. And then she fell
into the pond with a shriek.
“AAHHHH” shrieked Abby.
Her friend Caroline was
frozen with fear and ran away
leaving Abby alone. Abby
said, “Why, why? I thought
you would help me up,” but
just as she though Caroline
was a goner, she returned and
pulled her out of the pond.

Apparently a dark brown
chick was under the gazebo
when it dashed out from under the gazebo. While it was
running, it went to the bathroom on a green backpack,
but did not do any damage to
the back pack, that we know
of. No one knows whose
backpack it is, but we hope it
is not damage.

Sunny Days = Kilowatts
Have you noticed the fourteen solar panels on the hilltop Barn?
They have been working hard producing electricity every sunny day.
They produce about twenty kilowatts every day. A kilowatt is equal
to 1,000 watts. A 100 watt bulb could burn for ten hours and use one
kilowatt.
You can find out more about this by signing up for solar fun. You
might even find out how to write your name by the power of the sun!
Archery
By: Reaghan M. • Bear Cub
Sam Barocas got a turkey feather! It is so cool. He go it at archery. He got a bulls-eye.
A: What is your favorite part of camp?
T: I love when kids go farming, and they visit
me.
A: If you were a camper, what would your favorite activity be?
T: I think I would like newspaper because it is
relating and I love to write stories.
A: Recently, you have lost a good friend. Could
you tell me about that?
T: yes. Chocolate Chip was a great friend. It was
just his time to go. I miss her, and I hope to get a
new friend because I am lonely, but at least I have
great campers that visit me!

Once scorching hot
Wednesday morning,
Abby and I were strolling
near the pond. And then
we came upon the most
peculiar thing: it had some
feathers on it and some
yolk in it. It was a cracked
chicken egg. Abby and I
thought it came from Bunny Village or maybe it
came from the hen house. But I just wonder “how
could it get there because it is so far away from
the chicken house?” Thank you for reading this
article about the mysterious egg.
