Council Enjoys a Well-deserved Day in the Sun
Members of the Sacramento Council family took a well-deserved break to enjoy an afternoon in the sun on
Sunday, 13 July 2014 at Tal and Sue Norwood’s. The afternoon included a BBQ, pot-luck and Tal’s famous
popcorn and cotton candy. This event signifies the transition from one year to the next as we close out a
school year and prepare for fall activities that include continued support of our youth organizations, the start
of the school year, sea service birthdays, our Seapower Luncheon, Capitol Airshow, and Fleet Week in San
Francisco. Annual Sailor, Marine, and Coast Guardsman of the Year awards follow soon after.
Company with Large Local Roots Joins as a Navy League Corporate Member
Aerojet Rocketdyne recently joined the Navy League as a Corporate Member.
Aerojet Rocketdyne has had a long-time presence in Sacramento since the 1950s at
their Rancho Cordova facility. This partnership aligns well with Navy League’s
mission of promoting strong sea services. It also aligns with the Navy League’s
support for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education programs
at the local and national level. The Sacramento Council has a solid history of support
for STEM programs locally and an acknowledgement of the importance of STEM
trained workforce to the security of our nation. The Sacramento Board will work to
foster this relationship towards these ends.

The San Francisco Fleet Week Cruises on Saturday and Sunday
coincide with the annual visit of the U.S. Navy Fleet and the Blue
Angels to San Francisco Bay. Tour the Bay, see the Navy ships
at the piers and at anchor, and venture out under the Golden
Gate.
The SS Jeremiah O’Brien is an ideal platform for viewing the air
show this year featuring the Blue Angels and taking part in the
unforgettable maritime spectacle.
Complimentary continental breakfast, hot dogs, popcorn,
beverages and entertainment are included for this cruise. Dance
to 40’s Big Band music on deck, tour the engine room, shop in
the ship’s Store, wander up to the Flying Bridge, make new
friends and exchange war stories with old ones.
Visit the O’Brian’s website for additional details and to get tickets
for this unique adventure: http://www.ssjeremiahobrien.org/
I had an opportunity a few years back to take this trip and it was
an incredible experience. Just the tour of the bay was worth the
price of admission. That was even with the Blues getting
cancelled due to fog, hey, its SF after all. – Mike O’Docharty

Sea Cadet Update
I have proclaimed the month of September "Naval Sea Cadet Corps Month," in recognition of the many
benefits we all realize from this premier youth program. While you are urged to fully support the NSCC
program throughout the year, designating September as Naval Sea Cadet Corps Month will give you an
opportunity to place special emphasis on the Navy League's exclusively sponsored youth development
program. As of Aug. 1, there were 395 active Sea Cadet units. The memorandum and proclamation can be
located in the Council Resources page under Communications at
http://navyleague.org/councils/council_resources.html

Sacramento and Placer Councils Partner to Share Support for Luther Burbank NJROTC
Recently, the Navy League Placer Council approached the Sacramento Council Board of Directors and
offered to coordinate support for the Luther Burbank Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. The
Cadets at Luther Burbank have traditionally been a Supported Unit of the Sacramento Council. Placer
Council lost their Supported Unit when the NJROTC program at Florin High School was disestablished.
The Sacramento Council appreciates this opportunity to “double down” on the support provided to the
Titan Battalion of Luther Burbank High School and looks forward to a productive partnership with our
friends up the hill in Auburn.
