Launched into Learning...
in Mrs. Morrow’s First Grade Classroom
Blasting Off in Literacy
Comprehension: Merging our
thinking…this week we learned to be aware
of when we are using our background
knowledge and visualization while reading
non-fiction text. We read about polar bears
and we used the text features + our
knowledge about penguins (another arctic
animal) + our background knowledge of snow
and ice to better understand the text. Accuracy: Long i was our focus this week.
We looked at 2 different ways the long i
sound is created. When “y” is the only vowel
as in: by, my, cry and when the vowel team
“igh” is used as in night, sigh and bright.
Writing
This was a “Show Me What You Know” week. The
students were asked to write an informative
piece using facts about an animal. You will be
receiving those at conferences.

Math: Reaching for the Stars!
2D shapes have been a lot of fun exploring!
We’ve had activities and games all week that
allows us time to see what shapes that
together make another shape; and/or work
with shapes to create other a particular
shape or design. We also began working
with 3D shapes: cylinder, cone, rectangular
prism, triangular prism, cube, sphere, and
pyramid. Please take time to look around for
these shapes as you’re out and about with
your child. The more they see them in “real
life” places the easier it is for them
understand and develop a knowledge of
shapes.
