Shiseido Has Developed an Ingredient That
Helps Eyelashes Grow Longer
～ Zizyphus Jujuba Fruit Extract Promotes the Growth Rate of Eyelashes～
Shiseido has newly found out that length of eyelashes is dependent
on their growth rate. This investigation led us to make a new finding
that Zizyphus jujuba fruit extract*1 is highly effective to help
eyelashes grow longer through promoting their growth rate.
These research results will be reported at the 13th Annual Meeting
of the Japanese Society of Anti-Aging Medicine in Yokohama, June
28 to 30, 2013.

Research on Eyelashes and New Findings
There is a high awareness concerning the eye area, in which eye makeup was ranked first in terms of the
key points of wearing makeup in the EU, United States, Russia, Brazil, Japan and China (Figure 1).
Additionally, the usage rate of mascara being ranked number only one in Europe and the United States
suggests a high level of interest regarding eyelashes (Figure 2).
Shiseido investigated the physiological and histological features of eyelashes, and reported the results via
scientific meetings and journals*2. Shiseido’s research elucidates that eyelashes are on a more rapid cycle (4
months) but a slower growth rate (0.18mm/day) compared with scalp hairs. Additionally, the growing phase
of eyelashes (approximately 40 days) occupies one-third of the hair cycle (Figure 3). Moreover, the length
of eyelashes varies in a person.
On this basis, Shiseido focused on the relationship between the growth rate and length of eyelashes. It is
revealed that length of eyelashes is largely dependent on their growth rate through examining more than 250
eyelashes in Japanese women in their 20s and 30s (Figure 4).

Discovery That Zizyphus Jujuba Fruit Extract Accelerates the Growth Rate of Eyelashes
Based on these findings, Shiseido promoted research to find out cosmetic ingredients making eyelashes
longer through accelerating their growth rate. As a result of examining more than 200 kinds of plant extracts
to stimulate the proliferation of hair follicle cells, Zizyphus jujuba fruit extract was found to be highly
effective.
Furthermore, an laboratory test designed on the continuous use of trial products*3 (containing or not
containing Zizyphus jujuba fruit extract) over a four-month period demonstrated that Zizyphus jujuba fruit
extract increases the growth rate of eyelashes (Figure 5).
