JANET’S JOTTINGS
What a privilege to be voted in as
President of the Darwin Probus
Club, and I thank you for giving me
this opportunity.
I joined Probus just over a year ago
and have met such great folks and
had much fun. With our meetings
and Guest Speakers, day trips,
dinners out, movies and of course
the Tripe Club, something for everyone! I have some big steps to follow
in, with our Past Presidents setting the standard.
This is your club, so please approach me at any time with ideas
and suggestions that will enhance the club further. We have old
friendships to consolidate and new members to embrace into
our club. The club continues to grow in numbers and each one
has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.
This year, we have planned a programme with some very interesting speakers, and more adventures on our fun day trips as
we explore more destinations.
This year is the 25th year since the Darwin Probus Club was
conceived, so celebrations are in the planning for this special
occasion towards the end of the year.
I do encourage you all to participate in the Rendezvous in
August/September. We want to be Ambassadors to our
National and International visitors, to show them the Darwin
hospitality and friendliness. But also for you to sit back and be
proud of what we have achieved as a club. It is no small feat to
organize such an extravaganza and we may never have this
opportunity again. I am very proud of our very active club!
Cheers,
Janet
PROFILE—KEN COHALAN OAM
My forbear’s came from
County Cork Ireland in 1859
and resided in Ned Kelly
country along the NSW/Vic
border. Thus the irrelevant
sense of humour and lack of
respect for stupid poor
thought through regulations.
My parents moved from
NSW to Qld thus I attended a
number of primary schools
and only just passed
Scholarship at 14yrs. Living
on the land my first job was working for myself growing Swede
Turnips for the market.
My parents moved again and we ended up Dairy Share
Farmers, this started my future in the Dairy Industry, joined
Junior Farmers, took up correspondence courses in Dairy
Technology which lead to working at Nestle` Gympie moving
from Leading Hand to Laboratory Technician along with
appointed as President local social club.
Married the girl (Connie) next door farm after our cow keep
chasing their dog so we needed to resolve the issue. Took
over Connie parents farm which then was sold, applied and
appointed for Dairy Manager job Zambia Africa, it fell through
so arrived on Pauls Milk doorstep in Brisbane and started next
day. Bought our first house $500 deposit we had two children
boy and girl.
In the meantime, Pauls sent me to training courses and I
wrote reports on how I thought they could improve the
operation. As they were getting free reports they decided to
move me one department to another, Receivals, Yogurt, Ice
Cream, Bottling UHT then I was made a supervisor. Given a
strong role in getting the plant operating in 6 days after the Brisbane floods. In their wisdom they paid for me to go to Gilbert
Chandler
Institute of Dairy Technology Victoria with wife and 2 kids living
in a caravan. Gee its cold at Werribee.
Back to Qld appointed Suncoast Milk manager Nambour, then
we took over South Burnett and Marybourgh operations with
responsibility for 460 dairy farmers and three factories. Offered
to include Port Curtis Rockhampton or relocate to Darwin as
GM Pauls NT. The appeal of being responsible for Milk, Dairy
Products, Coca-Cola, Fruit Juice, UHT and Ice Cream with 600
million potential customers to our north was too appealing also
it was further away from head office and dairy farmers.
GUEST SPEAKER—7th APRIL, 2010.
Ron Strachan (The flag man).
Ron, a great friend of Probus, will tell us about—you
guessed it, flags. A fascinating story by a funny fellow.

Thus April Fools day 1994 moved to Darwin as GM Pauls (NT)
also asked to be President Chamber Commerce & Industry.
Always believed for business to be successful it must be part of
the community.
Pauls was taken over by an Italian Company Parmalet. I
thought it was time to leave their employ although we increased
sales by 47% in 4 years with the highest sales per capita in the
world of Coca-Cola 110 l.p.h annum and Pauls Iced Coffee 40
l.p.h.annum. We Territorians do like to drink. Set up a water
plant in East Timor and started a number of small businesses
while continuing in community organisations.
Over the years we have been fortunate and travelled most of
the world, some on business, some on holiday. We love Darwin so we’re here to stay.
