A unique museum setting with prestigious collections
With 200,000 visitors each year, Unterlinden Museum ranks second in attendance among regional fine art museums in France. Housed in a
former convent dating back to the 13th century, stroll through the medieval cloister to explore the collections which displays a remarkable group
of paintings and sculptures from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It possesses one of the greatest works of Western art: the Isenheim
Altarpiece executed between 1512 and 1516 by Nicolaus of Haguenau and Matthias Grünewald which attracts visitors from all over the world.
The museum’s collection of decorative art objects includes silver and gold treasures as well as an exceptional group of hunting and military
weapons. Its archaeology section offers a nearly complete overview of the early development of human society, with objects from everyday life
(Bergheim mosaic, 3rd century AD) or funerary contexts (gold jewelers from a princely sepulcher).
The museum is growing: an ambitious project
In order to redeploy the Unterlinden museum collections will benefit from a new setting designed by Herzog & de Meuron architects and The
Historical Monuments. The former convent and municipal baths will be upgraded to the ancient art and events, along with the construction of a
brick building, covered with copper will host on two levels modern and contemporary art collections. An underground tunnel linking the convent
to the modern building will showcase the museum’s history and an overview of the art of the 19th and early 20th century.
End of the construction: December 2015.
2015: Isenheim Altarpiece
Until autumn 2015, the Isenheim Altarpiece is presented in the Dominican Church.
This remarkable “church hall” of 14th century with its wooden ceiling and glazed tiles was completed in 1346 and represents one of the finest
achievements of the mendicant orders of the Empire. This is a unique opportunity to expose all the works painted by Martin Schongauer, stored
in Colmar: Altarpiece Orlier (1470-1475), the Altarpiece of the Dominicans (1480) and the Virgin rose bush (1473). The altarpiece of St. Catherine
and St. Laurent (around 1510) and sculptures of the late middle Ages complete the presentation.
