PMC 71 in DP Level Measurement in MMA Acid Stripper Columns- Chemical Cerabar S PMC 71 Ceraphire™ ceramic pressure transmitters handle highly corrosive chemicals Acid storage tanks Cerabar S PMC 71 with flange Typical chemical plant Ceramic pressure transmitters replace expensive remote seals in DP level applications. capillary connections, causing safety hazards and unscheduled process down-time. to choose from, the Cerabar S PMC71 can be customized for almost any application. Customer profile Solution Results The customer removed the previous metal diaphragm remote seal DP transmitter and installed two PMC71 Ceraphire ceramic diaphragm pressure transmitters made with zirconium metal flanges and Kalrez™ O-rings. The customer installed the PMC71 transmitters in the same process connections once used for the DP transmitter remote seals. The differential pressure level measurement is now made electronically in the DCS. The two PMC71 transmitters provide accurate pressure measurements for the calculation of DP level. In addition, the Ceraphire ceramic sensors in the PMC71 are completely impervious to the corrosive chemicals in the MMA reaction vessel. This provides several benefits to the customer: 1. Cost savings from not having to replace DP transmitters with expensive zirconium remote seals every six months as preventative maintenance. 2. Enhanced process safety through the removal of “dumb” remote seals which are incapable of detecting a leak in the process diaphragm. 3. Increased process up-time since the PMC71 ceramic transmitters don’t require routine maintenance or replacement. 4. Faster response time to changes in level since the long oil-filled capillaries have been eliminated. A major producer of Methyl Methacrylate (MMA). Application description Measuring DP level in acid stripper columns in the MMA production process. Process material: highly corrosive chemical mixture Temperature: 248°F (120°C) Static pressure: 0 to 30 psia Column height: 25 feet Application challenges The customer previously used differential pressure transmitters with metal diaphragm remote seals to measure level. Due to the extremely corrosive properties of the chemicals in the reaction vessel, the remote seal flanges were machined completely out of zirconium to withstand the application. Even with zirconium all-wetted parts, the remote seals still had to be replaced every six months as preventative maintenance against pitting and corrosion of the thin metal diaphragms. Occasionally the corrosive chemicals permeated the pressure diaphragms and leaked out through the CS0274/24/ae Instrument description The Cerabar S PMC71 with Ceraphire ceramic diaphragm technology provides highly accurate and stable pressure measurements in difficult gage or absolute pressure applications. The dry (no fill fluid) ceramic sensor accurately measures deep vacuums at elevated temperatures without damage to the diaphragm. The Ceraphire ceramic material used in the sensor is 99.9% pure aluminum oxide (Al2O3) for best-in-class chemical compatibility. The physical durability of the ceramic sensor makes it ideal for abrasive slurries or applications requiring frequent cleaning of buildup on the diaphragm.
