ROSENGÅRD URBAN PATHWAY
Focus areas: Demo cycle path, meeting places, lighting, green structures, reduced car traffic
Rosengård urban pathway links
Rosengård to the central parts of
Malmö. Restoration, construction
of new meeting places and the
highlighting of nodes are all part
of the investments where residents
and other stakeholders are involved
in the planning process.
Aims and objectives
The aim is to increase the use of the
pathway by pedestrians and cyclists, by
improving its function as a communication link and enhancing its attractiveness through increased safety and
new social meeting places.
Objectives:
• Reduced emissons of green house
gases with 483 tonnes/year
• Construction of two meeting
places
• Construction of an activity space
• Installation of LED lighting on
meeting places
• Creation of a demo pathway
• Establish green structures that
mitigate the effects of and tolerate climate change
Co-financed by:
A demo path way
The Rosengård urban pathway will be
equipped with air pumps and other
objects to strengthen the identity of
the pathway and improve its status.
Trees will be planted that take climate
change and climate adaptation into
consideration. Nodes along the pathway will be highlighted to enhance
the use of these small meeting places
and two larger meeting places – a
town square and an activity space –
will be equipped with innovative and
energy efficient lighting and sustainable and maintenance free seating.
Along the pathway small collaborative
gardens are established to strengthen
cohesion across gender, age and cultural borders.
A new town square
A town square will be established
near the centre of Rosengård, next to
local merchants. Participatory processes have influenced the appearance
and function of the square, and local
unemployed have been offered internship during construction.
Sustainable Rosengård
Rosengård urban pathway is part of a
large investment program, Sustainable
Rosengård, which runs between 20092014. Many physical changes are taking
place, and residents are getting involved through participatory processes.
The aim is to set a global example for
sustainable urban development in
neighbourhoods in need of regeneration. The main focus is on reducing the
emissions of green house gases, but the
climate investments will also act as a
driver for socioeconomic development.

An activity space shaped by
young women
Young people from Rosengård, primarily women, have been essential in
planning an activity space on an existing parking space along the pathway.
This will now be designed for dance,
music and family activities. Empowering young women in the neighbourhood and inspire them to take
local ownership of public places may
also lead to a changed atmosphere in
an otherwise male dominated public
environment.
Interesting results are already seen,
such as the establishment of a new
female network with the aim to influence the development of Malmö and
an increase in the proportion of girls
visiting the nearby youth centre.
Tests events led the way
During the planning process of the
activity space, young people have been
offered short-term internships to set
up test events, such as a sustainability
festival, a music show and a christmas market. The events have been
very popular and attracted hundreds
of participants from the neighbourhood. A process has started to ensure
continuous activities and continued
involvement from local people once
the activity space is up and running.
To stimulate local ownership over the
new meeting places a naming contest
took place in September 2012. 500
suggestions were submitted, with help
from the young locals.
The Rosengård urban pathway will
be completed in September 2013.
