Know
Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream will be
there, and is hosting the president’s
“Welcome Reception” on Thursday
evening. If you are not a member of
this association and/or have never
attended the full convention, you
are missing out on ways to help you
help your business, and your young
employees are missing a chance to
win scholarships. Every year, the
association awards $10,000 in
scholarships to our members’ employees who have worked at your
store for at least 3 months—that
could be your own children! Do
not miss this opportunity. The pool
of entrants is not that large, so chances are good your students could walk away with several hundred or
several thousand dollars toward their college costs. For a list of seminars, speakers, events, and times,
call the association at 800.798.7484 or visit the website at www.glicffa.com.

Another successful Flavor Day was held on October 8,
2011 in Lansing, MI. We tasted over 35 flavors from
Bubble Gum Cake to Carrot Cake, to Funnel Cake.
Then we tried Honey Vanilla to Prickly Pear and
Spotted Purple Cow!
Whew! When it was all
over, we were able to narrow it down to six new
flavors for the 2012 season.
Look for our new flavors being introduced in early
Spring, 2012:
Cookie Jar, Triple Caramel Praline, 3-D Chocolate,
Raspberry Rendezvous, and holiday flavors: Carrot
Cake and Peppermint Crackle.
We will have flavor strips to go with them. New flavor strips are only mailed to those who request them.

Recipe Corner:
Here are some ideas to add to your take
out sales for the winter. Sell the novelty
items individually, or make up 6-12 packs.
Don’t forget to suggest them as gift items
also.
Peppermint “Dilly Bars”
Loosely roll a 3-4 oz ball of Ashby’s Peppermint
Candy Crunch ice cream. Lay ice cream on a tray
lined with cellophane. While the ice cream roll
still has some air space between the curls, place
a partially unwrapped candy cane
in the middle. Soften slightly,
if needed,
then flatten with
the bottom
of a cup while
keeping the
round shape.
Re-freeze bar
until hard, and dip
into white chocolate cone (or melted candy)
coat. Immediately sprinkle with crushed candy
cane. Let cone coat harden, then place the “dilly
bar” into a clear or holiday treat bag. Tie with a
festive ribbon. Freeze. Sell. Profit.
Winter Wonders
Keep sales going into January with delicious,
lower fat desserts. For those sure to start
watching their weight in January, add a few new
choices they can’t resist. Try “Country Apple
Pie”: purchase low fat graham cracker crusts
and place a layer of AS No Sugar Added Country
Apple Pie in the bottom. Add a layer of sugar
free caramel topping and repeat layers, mounding ice cream up in the center of the pie. Garnish
with low fat/no fat whipped topping and
chopped nuts or sugar free candies.
Help with portion control by dipping 2 oz. NSA/
low fat and regular ice cream and yogurt scoops
(be sure to mark which is which) in a variety of
flavors. Place the balls on a tray to freeze hard,
then place them into mini muffin papers in a
small cake/dessert box, preferably with a window. For nutritional information: each 2 oz. serving would have half the nutritional values of our
4 oz. serving size listed on the label/nutrition
sheet.
Scooter’s Malt Shoppe and Ashby’s Sterling
Ice Cream Partner with Candlewood Suites
to “Give Kids the World”
On a warm November 2, 2011, afternoon, Cindy Bristol of Scooter’s Malt Shoppe and Dianne Tunison of
Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream traveled to Kalamazoo,
MI to dip up some tasty ice cream sundaes to weary
travelers staying at the Candlewood Suites, an extended stay, all-suites hotel. For their donation to the
“Give Kids the World Village”, patrons received a
scoop of Ashby’s vanilla ice cream on which they
could add a number of toppings provided by Scooter’s
Malt Shoppe, a long-time Ashby’s retailer. For those
customers who checked out prior to the event, the hotel had paper ice cream cones printed up that the people could “buy”, add their name, and post it on the
wall of the hotel’s lobby.
Give Kids the World Village is another property
owned by the Candlewood group that exists solely to
help give children with life-threatening illnesses and
their families a little retreat from their pain and suffering. This 70-acre, nonprofit storybook resort is
located near Central Florida’s most beloved attractions. Children and their families are treated to weeklong, cost-free fantasy vacations, complete with accommodations in the Village’s whimsical villas, transportation, donated attraction tickets, meals, and much
more.
Since 1986, Give Kids the World has hosted more
than 106,000 families from all 50 states and more than
70 countries. This extraordinary, life-changing experience is made possible only through generous donations from individuals and corporations. For more
information or to make a donation, visit givekidstheworld.org. Their address is 210 S. Bass Road, Kissimee, FL 34746. Telephone: 407.396.1114.
“If I had an ice cream parlor. . .”
By Dianne Tunison
I would host a holiday open house at this time of the year,
to let my regular and new customers know that I have hot
soup, sandwiches, and hot and cold drinks available through
the winter months. By inviting them in to enjoy a free coffee, hot chocolate, peppermint mocha, etc. and a sample
taste of the treats below, I can remind them/let them know
that I have items to sell throughout the year, not just ice
cream in the summer.
Now is a good time to make and sell ice cream cakes, pies,
cupcakes and other novelty items that can be purchased at
the last minute to take to one of those holiday gatherings we
have so many of this time of year. What better way to say
“Happy Holiday” than an ice cream treat that can be enjoyed with a group of family and friends. Try an easy ice
cream “cake” by packing Ashby’s Peppermint Candy
Crunch ice cream into a
candy cane shaped
pan (or slice the tub and
cut
to this
shape). Frost with white
and red topping to resemble a candy
cane. Garnish
with holly leaves cut from green
jelly candies
and red hots for berries (or use
silk
holly
leaves with berries). There are
ma ny
ot her
shapes you can
use, too. Try
trees, bells, snowm e n ,
Santa’s face, etc.
Another
popular treat at the holidays is
bon bons.
These are easily made by
using a small scoop to form ice cream balls. Freeze hard,
then dip them in cone coat and quickly sprinkle with
chopped peanuts, nuts, crushed candy canes, sprinkles, cocoa powder, etc. Re-freeze until hard. Do the same with
bakery-bought donut holes and add these to the tray for a
“cake and ice cream” treat. Christmas trays are easily available at your local “dollar” store. Wrap in cellophane, tie
with a fancy ribbon, and freeze.
During my open house, I would also prominently display
gift cards and/or gift certificates and gift baskets containing
ice cream dishes, scoops, toppings, gourmet dipped cones,
and garnishes. I’d punch holes in the corner of the gift certificates to be attached to the baskets with a list of my ice
cream flavors on the back suggesting the gift certificate
could be used toward a quart of ice cream to complete the
dessert basket.
I would also decorate my store inside and out with Christmas holiday lights and garland, etc. to let passersby know
that my store is open and ready for business at this time of
the year. Then in January, I’d change the theme to “winter
wonderland” to keep it festive and relevant to the season.
