+ Life Thoughts in the Church Year +
Fourth Sunday after Pentecost – The weight of sin causes us to cry with Paul, “Wretched man that I am! Who will
deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24) Called to faith by the Holy Spirit, however, we also echo Paul,
“Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (25a) Those with post-abortion trauma readily identify with
“Wretched.” We need to point them to Paul’s answer and to Jesus’ invitation, “Come to me, all who labor and are
heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Prayer: Merciful Lord, we pray for those struggling with the sin
of abortion that they might know Your rest. Amen.

The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
Zechariah 9:9-12; Romans 7:1-25a; Matthew 11:25-30
Jesus Christ, Our Savior, Is Our True Peace and Sabbath Rest
Though we have died with Christ in Holy Baptism, and we are raised to new life in Him, we find “another law waging
war” in our body and life, that is, between our old Adam and the new man (Romans 7:23). By the Spirit of Christ, we
“desire to do what is right,” but we are not able to do so because “nothing good” dwells in our sinful flesh (Romans
7:18). “Thanks be to God,” therefore, “through Jesus Christ our Lord” who delivers us from “this body of death”
(Romans 7:24-25). We rejoice in Him, our gentle King, who comes “righteous and having salvation” (Zechariah 9:9).
He speaks peace to our embattled hearts, and by His blood of the New Testament He sets us “free from the waterless
pit,” and He returns us to the stronghold of our Baptism (Zechariah 9:10-12). Though we “labor and are heavy laden,”
He calls us to Himself and gives rest to our souls through His free and full forgiveness (Matthew 11:28), not because
we are “wise and understanding,” but by the gracious will” of God the Father, whom “the Son chooses to reveal” in love
(Matthew 11:25-27).

Life
Quotes – “The Declaration of Independence…claims…the ultimate source of authority by stating…they
were…’appealing to the Supreme Judge of the Word for the rectitude of their ‘intentions’… The foundations of our
independence and our Government rests upon basic religious convictions. Back of the authority of our laws is the
authority of the Supreme Judge of the Word, to whom we still appeal. It seems to me perfectly plain that the authority
of law, the right to equality, liberty and property, under American institutions, have for their foundation reverence for
God. If we could imagine that to be swept away, these institutions of our American government could not long
survive.”
President Calvin Coolidge, September 21, 1924 – A “Life Quote from Lutherans For Life,

The Lutheran Hour airs each Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. on WOWO, AM 1190 on the dial.
The topic for
today, Sunday, July 6th is "Real Rest for the Weary”, Matthew 11:25-30 presented by Lutheran Hour Speaker: Rev.
Gregory Seltz. Real rest is a gift form a gracious God Who draws us to Himself and fills the emptiness in our souls.
Next Sunday, July 13th will be "Truth Has a Voice”, Romans 8:12-17 presented by Lutheran Hour Speaker: Rev.
Gregory Seltz. There are many destructive voices that call to us. Jesus has another word, a clear voice of life and
salvation.

Today’s broadcast, Sunday, July 6th is “Rest”, Matthew 11:28-30 presented by Rev. Dr. Walter A. Maier III,
Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana. 1. All people need spiritual rest; 2. Jesus offers this rest to all
who come to Him in faith; 3. Having this rest means wonderful realities for our lives. The broadcast for next, Sunday,
July 13th is “That’s Not Right!”, Isaiah 55:10-13 presented by Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Ahlersmeyer, Holy Cross Lutheran
Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana. The chosen people of God are in exile under the domination of pagan people. That’s
not right! God’s Word will right the wrong, leading His people out of captivity just like He did with the Exodus. We live
in a world that is not right. God’s Word-Made-Flesh, Jesus Christ, endures the wrong, leading those who place their
trust in Him into the heavenly Promised Land.

Thank you to each member who helped bring us so close to “balancing the budget” in June
and to all who faithfully support Ascension throughout the year. While we did not meet the
goal of balancing the budget we together made significant progress.
As the New Year begins we continue to work to bring this accumulated deficit down and at
the same time meet the important needs of Ascension Lutheran Church and School. We
give thanks to God.
