John F. Kennedy
History has many special dates. These are the dates we all learn.
These are the dates we should never forget. This month is the 50th
anniversary of one of those dates. A president of the United States died on
November 22, 1963. The president was John F. Kennedy. He had been
president for only three years, but he had a big effect on America. Kennedy
was a very popular president. People around the world were surprised and
saddened by his death.

John F. Kennedy was a Navy officer.
John Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1917. He
went to college at Harvard University. He served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II. Kennedy later became a congressman and senator from
Massachusetts. In 1960, Kennedy was the Democratic Party’s nominee
for president. Kennedy was elected as the 35th President of the United
States. He was just 43 years old. He was the youngest person ever to be
elected to this office. Kennedy had big ideas to help America. He asked
everyone to help make America better. In his first speech as president,
Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you
can do for your country.”

He started a program to send
Americans to the Moon.

American astronauts were
the first to land on the Moon.

the Peace Corps in 1961. The
program is still going today. The

These volunteers teach farmers how to grow better crops. They teach
people about business, modern technology and more. President
Kennedy wanted to do more for America too.

John F. Kennedy and His Wife Jacqueline
In 1963, he was getting ready for the next election. On November 22,
1963, he flew to Dallas, Texas. The president planned to give a speech
there. He never got the chance. The president was riding in an open car
when someone shot him. Kennedy later died at a Dallas hospital. America
stopped to honor their young president. Kennedy was buried in Arlington
National Cemetery, in Virginia. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson became
the next president. Now, 50 years later, America will remember that day in
1963. We will see Kennedy’s story in newspapers, magazines and on TV.
Older people will remember President John F. Kennedy. Younger people
will learn about what Kennedy meant to America. They will learn about that
sad day in November 1963.
