(Part 2 of 2) In the last newsletter, you read the bad news about the air inside your home. We spend 90% of our time in our sealed up tight homes where pollutants are 1000 times more likely to reach your lungs than outdoors; and the fact that many homes have air that is 25 to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. Now it is time for some good news. You can do something to protect you and your family, and it won’t cost a lot of money or time. The key is to be informed. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), there are three things you can do to combat the problem of unhealthy indoor air. www.epa.gov #1: Source Control Get to the source of the pollution to contain or eliminate it. It can be something simple such as reducing emissions from your gas stove. Adjustments like these are usually the most efficient and cost-effective ways to improve your indoor air quality. #2: Ventilation Another way to improve the air quality in your home is to let in outdoor air. Today most homes have forced air heating systems which do not bring fresh air into the home. Operating window fans, A/C units with fresh air vents, or simply opening a window can bring in some fresh air, but at the cost of making your home less energy efficient. #3: Air Cleaners It's important to do your research when searching for an air cleaner. There are some on the market that don’t necessarily improve air quality. The ideal unit should collect pollutants from indoor air indicated by a high percentage efficiency rate, and have a high clean air delivery rate (CADR) measured in cubic feet per minute. Most units will remove the usual allergens such as dust and pollen, but there are higher priced ones that remove viruses and VOC’s. According to the EPA regular cleaning can reduce, but not eliminate household allergens such as dust mites, pollen, and animal dander. It’s A Mad, Mad, Digital World… Discover How To Help Keep Your Kids Safe Online! The Idea Corner Remember when we were kids our parents had to worry that we might watch too much TV? It’s a whole new world! Today parents have to worry about kids being exposed to illicit material, online predators, and ruthless cyber bullies, not to mention narcissist values, social isolation, and lack of privacy that can come with growing up online. Now, of course, the Internet is a very useful tool, and it will afford new generations possibilities that we can only imagine. The Internet is a tool with many benefits, but like any tool, it has to be respected and used properly. May The 4th Be With You! "One out of every five kids gets sexual solicitations online. Strangers, predators, and cyber-bullies all target children, and their work is simplified when screen names reveal age, gender, or hometown. If posts aren't marked as private, personal information can be displayed to an unrestricted audience of readers." – www.scholastic.com Thankfully, many schools today are teaching Internet safety, including how to guard privacy. But what are some simple things that we can do at home to make sure our kids are safe online? Stay aware of online activities Many parents don’t realize just how easy it is for their children to stumble upon inappropriate material or how easy it is to converse with strangers online through things such as video games and social media. Stay Informed Parents are vital in educating their children on the dangers of using the Internet, keeping their information private while online, the value of a good reputation, and how one wrong post can wipe it out. Educate kids on the finality of posting pictures and their words online. Once something is posted, it's out of their control, and it’s never coming back to them. Stay proficient Knowledge is your power when it comes to your kids and the Internet. It is important for parents to ask questions, take the time to learn who your kids are talking to, what websites they use, use security settings and establish a code of conduct. Growing up online can be awesome! When parents and educators keep kids informed, they can avoid the potential dangers and use the Internet to thrive.
