TORUN
TORUN (German Thorn, Latin Torun, civitas Torunensis) is a city in northern Poland, on the
Vistula river, with 200,000 inhabitants. Today Torun is one of the capitals of the KuyavianPomeranian Voivodship (since 1999), previously it was a capital of Torun Voivodship (19751998).
Toruń was founded on 28 December 1233. It owes its origins to the Teutonic Order that built a
castle there in the mid-13th century as a base for the conquest and evangelization of Prussia. It
soon developed a commercial role as part of the Hanseatic League.
This small historic trading city preserves to a remarkable extent its original street pattern and
outstanding early buildings that provides an exceptionally complete picture of the medieval way
of life. In the Old and New Town, the many imposing public and private buildings from the 14th
and 15th centuries are striking evidence of Torun's importance.
The most famous son of Torun was Nicolaus Copernicus (19 February 1473). The city is also
known for its tasty gingerbread, Nicolaus Copernicus University founded in 1945, and the unique
complex of XIX century fortifications encircling the city.
On 4 December 1997 the Old Town of Torun was entered into UNESCO World Cultural and
Natural Heritage List. Therefore, it is one of a few places in Poland and a few hundred locations
in the world that are regarded as the most valuable heritage of humankind.

SHORT HISTORY OF THE CITY
In the 13th century Torun was called Thorun. To the most important events that create its rich
and unique history belong:
▪ 1230-31 the Teutonic Knights built a castle there (1230-31);
▪ 1233 the settlement acquired town rights;
▪ 1263 Franciscan monks settled in Torun, and they were followed in 1239 by Dominicans;
▪ 1264 the neighbouring New Town Thorn was founded. It was a separate town until 1454,
when the old and new cities were amalgamated;
▪ During the 14th century, Torun joined the Hanseatic League;
▪ 1440 Hanseatic cities Thorn, Elbing and Danzig formed the Prussian Confederation;
▪ 1454 the cities of Prussia rose up against the Teutonic Knights: Thorn accepted the
sovereignty of the Polish crown in return for recognition of its city privileges;
▪ 1466 The Thirteen Years' War and uprisings of Prussian cities end with the Second Treaty of
Thorn, in which the Teutonic Order ceded sovereignty over western Prussia to Casimir IV of
Poland;

With the Reformation the city became mostly Protestant;
1793 the city became a part of the Kingdom of Prussia;
1807 the city became a part of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw;
1814 the city returned to the Kingdom of Prussia;
1871 the city became part of the German Empire;
1919 After World War I, under the Treaty of Versailles, the city returned to Polish
sovereignty, becoming the capital of the province of Pomeranian Voivodship;
1939 After Germany's invasion of Westerplatte at Danzig (now Gdansk), the city was again
annexed to Germany as part of the administrative province of Danzig-West Prussia;
1945 the city returns to Poland. After the borders were redrawn under the Potsdam
Agreement reached at the end of World War II, Torun is now located close to the geographic
centre of Poland.
LEGENDS OF TORUN
THE LEGEND ABOUT HOW THE CITY BY THE VISTULA RIVER WAS NAMED
Long, long time ago, somewhere in meanders of the Vistula river, raised a town.
To feel safe inhabitants surrounded it by high walls and reinforced by defensive towers. But one
of the towers was very curious about the world. That is why she made friends with the river and
learned a lot from her. And the Vistula knew a lot, and heard a lot, too. She was flowing from
Barania Gora, through Krakow, and Mazovian Land, so it was telling the tower all the newest
pieces of news and gossips. After a few years of the friendship, the tower became jealous and
didn't want to listen to the Vistula's stories any more. But the river still boasting of her
experience, and to make the tower listen, started to undermine her foundations. The tower
couldn't stand the coming waves, so it asked the river:
- Please, Vistula, don't make it, I will fall down!
- So, fall down! - answered Vistula, (in Polish it is: 'to
run').
During that time, two wayfarers were coming to town.
From afar they saw high walls and one of them asked:
- I wonder what that city is called.
And then, they heard how the Vistula river was answering to the Tower: "to run!" (so fall down!).
And that was the name which they wrote on maps they had.
THE LEGEND ABOUT THE RUFTSMAN AND FROGS
The story begins with a big flood in the town. After the water subsided thousands of frogs
appeared. They were everywhere, on the streets, at homes, even in the Town Hall.
The town citizens and guests found the frogs very repulsive and blamed this situation on the
town councillors and an overseer, and suggested new elections. In a reply to the complaints, the
overseer ordered that all citizens should fight with the frogs in every possible way.
All the efforts were in vain. Having no choice, the overseer announced that he would give his
beautiful daughter’s hand as a reward to someone who would manage to free the city from the
frogs plague.
Lots of brave young men wished to set the town free from the plague and to marry the beautiful
overseer’s daughter. But none of them managed to.

Then there appeared a poor raftsman and started playing his violin on the Town Square. Frogs,
engrossed in his music, came out from their hiding-places and surrounded the raftsman.
When he started to walk slowly towards the Mokre
Suburbs to the marshes the frogs silently followed him,
dispersed and never came back.
The raftsman was very happy to marry the beautiful girl
as he has been in love with her for years. The overseer
wasn’t too content to have such a son-in-law but he had
to keep his promise. Soon a pompous wedding took
place, after which the raftsman and his wife lived in
health and happiness. The overseer became a grandpa of
seven granddaughters and seven grandsons. And so they
all lived happily ever after.
Today, only a beautiful story and the Raftsman’s
Fountain with frogs remained. Sometimes children come
near to the fountain to wet their hands, to see the
raftsman or to throw a coin to the fountain so that they
could came back to Toruń in the future.
THE LEGEND ABOUT THE TORUN TOWN HALL
In 1466, after the Thirteen Years' War had finished, Toruń returned to the Kingdom of Poland.
From that time on long years of peace and prosperity began. After a meeting with the City
Council a major of Toruń, Henryk Stroband, decided to build up the most important building in
the city - the Old Town City Hall. It was the place where all the most important events like the
meetings of the City Council took place, where all the festivities were celebrated and the place
where merchants had their shops.
It was Antoni von Obberghen to whom the
reconstruction was offered. He agreed and
although the work wasn't easy, he seemed to be
very happy and eager to take to it. He was asked
to make the Town Hall a very exceptional and
astonishing building. Mr Obberghen set to work
to rebuild the Town Hall which was not only a
building but also a calendar.
Its tower was to represent a year, four smaller
towers were to symbolise the four seasons of the
year, twelve larger rooms supposed to represent
the twelve months, and 52 smaller rooms – 52
weeks of the year. The whole building had 365
windows – that is as many as many days the year
has. During each leap year, a bricklayer was hired
to build an additional window – a symbol of the
29th day of February. Each time the leap year was
finished, the 366th window was walled up.
Since that time, the Town Hall has been rebuilt many times. Nowadays, it is hard to find the
calendar made by the master Antoni. There still exists the big tower, the four smaller ones but it is
hard to tell the number of the windows and rooms left. Maybe you will count them by yourself
while visiting Toruń?

TORUN SCHOOL OF BANKING was founded on 27 August 1998. It is a non-state school
of economics and finance offering three-year long Bachelor’s programmes (full-time and parttime), two-year long Master programmes (full-time and part-time) and one-year post-graduate
courses.
Within the three-year Bachelor’s programmes the students may select among four study
programmes: Management, Finance and Accounting, European studies and Administration. They
can specialise in one the following fields: Accounting and Corporate Finances, Banking, Human
Resources Management, Information Technology in Business, Marketing and Public
Communication, and Taxation. In the year 2009/ 10 will start International Business- speciality in
English language.
The several different one-year post-graduate courses are arranged for all those who want to
improve their qualifications in: Accounting and Finance Management, Banking and Financial
Advisory Services, Economic and Legal Translations, Euromarketing, European Union
Programmes and Funds, Foreign Trade, Human Resources Management, Real Estate
Transactions Agency, Public Communication and Public Relations, Real Estate Management,
Real Estate Valuation, and Taxation.
The study curriculum comprises a wide range of both major and additional subjects such as for
instance: economics, management, public finances, financial and capital market, taxes, insurances,
managerial accounting, marketing, international finances and European Union finances, and
many more.
In order to educate the specialists who are in demand in the labour market, the school
emphasises combining theory and practice which manifests itself through an active cooperation
with the local business community. Their representatives form the WSB Advisory Committee
who is in charge of the appraisal of the curriculum. A number of experienced businessmen and

Practical training, which constitutes an important part of the study programmes, allows students
to assess their knowledge and establish contacts with their prospective employers.
The school organises lectures by well-known economists, politicians and representatives of the
local community, who comment on the most important social and political events concerning
Poland and the European Union.
Besides, the school organises a great deal of specialist courses and seminars on financial, legal
marketing subjects.

Torun School of Banking exercises a policy of international openness and places much emphasis
on international co-operation. It participates in Leonardo da Vinci and Erasmus Programmes.
Students actively take part in the school’s academic life. The Students’ Government co-operates
with student organisations, represents students in contacts with the school authorities, and
organises a number of social events.
The school facilities include two modern buildings with lecture rooms, a hall, administration
rooms, computer labs with access to Internet, and well equipped library with a reading room.
The school buildings are situated very close to the marvellous old centre of Torun – the complex
which is placed on the UNESCO world heritage list. The medieval town, whose rich history
comes back to the 13th century, is very hospitable for all its guests with a lot of its museums,
restaurants, bars, and many places of interests which all create an unforgettable atmosphere of its
own kind.

Post-graduate courses are an investment in personal intellectual potential due to development of

post-graduate studies in our Academy is the practical aspect of tasks and lectures.

For academic year 2008/2009 we offer 21 business-profiled faculties in Torun and 8 in
Bydgoszcz.
We also offer post-graduate studies on demand – for defined groups and studies co-financed by
the European Social Fund.
OVERVIEW
The Torun School of Banking has two modern buildings. The main one is situated on
MłodzieŜowa Street 31a, the other one on Dekerta Street 26. The buildings are sited close to each
other and close to the town centre. Its good localisation – not far from the bus station (PKS),
railway station (PKP), and local bus stops – facilitates access to the school.

LECTURE/ CLASSROOMS
The main building of total area exceeding 4000 square metres is one of the most modern edifices
in Torun built for didactical purposes. There are the Rector’s Office, the Dean’s Office, the
Chancellor’s Office, a number of lecture rooms, computer and language laboratories, a hall, and a
well equipped library situated in the building. Moreover, there is also a small bar, xerox service
point, and coin-in-slot machines with drinks and snacks. The other building, situated on Dekerta
Street, houses a few other conversation classrooms and lecture rooms.

Open trainigs are prepared for everyone who wants to acquire professional knowledge and
develop personal skills. Trainings are led by specialists and coaches of a that are able to adjust the
program to the needs of every Client or group profile. We guarantee highest quality and good
atmosphere at reasonable costs.

Trainings on Demand are based on the detailed analysis of individual, specific needs of the
Client and are the direct answer to them.
Forward Language Centre offers language courses for companies and individual Clients on
many levels and of many profiles (business, law, medicine, engineering etc.). We teach four
languages: English, German, French and Russian.
CAREER OFFICE
The aim of the Career Office is helping students and graduates of our Academy in effective
entering and efficient acting on a very demanding working market.

LIBRARY
The Torun School of Banking has its own library consisting of a lending room, a reading room
with access to shelved books, and a computer laboratory with access to Internet.
The library may boast about a large collection of books numbering more than 30 thousands
volumes; therein 9 thousands books and audiovisual materials stored in the reading room and
21 thousands textbooks.
The library also offers the students access to electronic bases, and chosen Polish and foreign
magazines (app. 70 titles). For regular readers of “Rzeczpospolita” the library offers free items
of the newspaper everyday.
All the volumes are catalogued in both the alphabetical and thematic catalogues. In the library
there functions an electronic internal library catalogue in the “Prolib” system allowing the
reader to search for the given book, check his personal library account, or make a reservation
of books of his interest.
Within the library collection there are also textbooks and cassettes for learning foreign
languages, a range choice of dictionaries and professional foreign literature.
Co-operation with other libraries
The students of our school are also entitled to use a reading room of Nicolas Copernicus City
Library in Torun (8, Słowackiego Street) and Provincial Pedagogical Library in Torun (4,
Dąbrowskiego_Street).

The Torun School of Banking is a shareholder of the WSB Publishing House (located in Poznań)
that publishes textbooks, manuals and scientific compilations of articles on economics and
finance. The authors of the published books are teaching and research staff members of our
school, of other Schools of Banking (in Gdansk, Poznan, Wroclaw), and of other Polish
universities.
In 2003 the Torun School of Banking published the second number of “Rocznik Naukowy WSB
w Toruniu” – a collection of articles on different subjects. The third number is to be published
very soon.
IT RESOURCES
Computer laboratories are equipped with multi-medial computers
all connected to the network controlled by the Windows 2000
Server System. Owing to a constant optical fibre connection
through a stabile Internet access is provided at school. The
students may use it freely in the library reading room.
THE PUBLISHING HOUSE
The Torun School of Banking is a shareholder of the WSB Publishing House (located in Poznan)
that publishes textbooks, manuals and scientific compilations of articles predominantly relating to
economics and finance. The authors of the published books are teaching and research staff
members of our school, of other Schools of Banking (in Gdansk, Poznan, Wroclaw), and of
other Polish universities.
As many as 250 titles, mainly on economics and law, have been published in the WSB Publishing
House so far. The offer is constantly broadened by volumes on other subjects, such as for
instance: psychology, information technologies, management, among others. The individual titles
are published in significant numbers of copies, the best volumes’ circulation being equalled to ten
thousands copies.

THE OPEN SCHOOL
Torun School of Banking has prepared a special programme for disabled people aiming at
facilitating education and gaining vocational satisfaction. The programme “Open School”
involves removal of architectonic barriers that enables an easy access to school for people on
wheelchairs. Dropped kerbs and a special porch, are provided to help wheelchair users cross
safely. There is also a parking place reserved for persons with disabilities. Inside the building
there are specially adjusted toilets, wide doors, hand-rails, and the lift.
All perspective questions should be addressed to a Chancellor’s Representative for Persons with
Disabilities (Danuta Zielińska, MSc – tel.+48 56 660 91 11). The representative should attend in
finding accommodation in Toruń and organising transport to and from the school. The disabled

people may also apply for a social stipend and count on help of the Careers Office in finding a
job.

HOW TO REACH US?
FIND THE CITY
Toruń is a town sited in northern Poland, on the Vistula river. It has been one of the capitals of
the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodship (Województwo kujawsko-pomorskie) since 1999.
You can reach the town by train, by bus, or by car. The nearest airport is in Bydgoszcz (45 km
from Toruń).
Travelling by train is usually the cheapest transport in Poland. The rail connections are
relatively good in Poland and there should be no problems with reaching Toruń either directly or
with changes from all bigger and smaller towns in Poland.
If you decided to reach us by car you should take one of the following roads to find yourself
at Toruń:

from Poznań, road No. 15 (via Gniezno)
from Wrocław, road No. 15 (via Trzebnica)

Access from railway station
Once you have reached “Toruń Główny” (the major Toruń railway station) you should take a local
bus nr 27 and get out on the 4th station. A 7-10 minutes walk in the direction other than to the
town centre will be then the last part of you journey.
The local bus ticket costs 2,40 PLN (punch it double on board unless you are a student) or half
of the price (if you have a valid student ID with you punch it once). The tickets can be bought in
“kiosks” or on board after 6 p.m. As long as you don’t punch your ticked it is invalid!
You can also take a taxi from a railway station. The cost should approximate 10- 12 PLN
(depending on the taxi company and the daytime).
Access from bus station
Both the local bus and national coach stations (PKS) are very close to the school. There is no
other way to get to the school than walking for 5-7 minutes or catching a taxi.
Access by car
Once you find yourself in the town centre (Stare Miasto) keep driving northward and consult the
map presented below.
