Hands-On Sight-Word Cubes Level 3 Designed to meet these objectives: Language • Students will recognize sight-words. • Students will develop reading fluency. • Students will develop writing and spelling skills. Students roll colorful cubes with Fry’s sight-words 61-90—recognizing and reading a new sight-word with each roll! You get 8 sets of 5 different cubes, each with 6 different sight-words—for a total of 40 wooden cubes and 30 sight-words. What’s Included • 40 wooden cubes Suggested Activities • Sight-Word Sentences: Give a small group of students a set of 5 different cubes. Have students take turns selecting a cube and rolling. After each roll, students write down a sentence using the sight-word that was rolled. • Find It: Put students in pairs or small groups. Give each group a level-appropriate book. Have students roll the sight-word cubes and find the word they rolled in the book (or somewhere in the classroom). Have a student roll both cubes at the same time. If the cubes land on the same word, the student gets a point! Then, it’s the next student’s turn. The first student to get 5 points wins. • Building Phrases: Provide students with one of each cube and a paper and pencil. Have students look at all of the words on a cube and then write 3 to 5-word phrases they can think of that use those words. Possible phrases include, “call her now,” “who has some,” “find him first,” “people like water,” etc. Meeting Individual Needs ELL Translate words into each student’s native language if possible. Then, write each word on an index card for students to practice reading aloud before they do the activities. Reteach/Extra Support Allow students to work with one cube at a time. While showing one word on the cube, say the word aloud and have students repeat it. After all of the words have been read aloud, roll the cube and have students say the word as a group. Then, provide each student with a cube and have them practice rolling the cubes and reading the words aloud. Challenge Have students roll a cube and write each word on a small card. Once all the words have been written, have students work together to put the words in alphabetical order.
